California Tsunamis

This month's meeting covered the history of Tsunamis on the California Coast, and recent research into potential Tsunami inundation areas along the Central Coast. Research shows that it is critical that we do emergency planning for Central Coast tsunamis and anticipate potential waves in the 50 to 100 foot elevation range. The presenter, Mr Blanck, has 30 years' work experience in geophysics, engineering geology, hydrogeology, environmental cleanup and assessment, and disaster preparedness and response. He is the former Riverside County and San Bernardino County geologist, and has all California geologic licenses.

Nacimiento Rocky Canyon Pump Station

This month's meeting was a presentation and field trip to the Nacimiento Water Project Rocky Canyon Pump Station. The station houses three 400 horsepower, constant speed pumps and draws water from the 850,000 gallon steel Rocky Canyon Tank. Thank-you to John Hollenbeck, project manager for the County of San Luis Obispo, for a great presentation.

Willow Road Extension

This month Dale Ramey from the County of San Luis Obispo presented the Willow Road Phase I Extension project which will soon be under construction. Nipomo's Willow Road Extension Project has been on the books for a very long time. There is a map dating back to the late 1950's with an east-west line between Highway 1 and Thompson Avenue labeled "Willow Rd." We are happy to announce that another portion of that line will soon be taking on aspects of an HMA paved road. this project is the extension of Willow Road from Misty Glen Place, crossing Pomeroy Road, to Hetrick Road. Ultimately Willow Road will extend to Thompson Avenue with a tight diamond interchange with Highway 101.

Tank Farm Sewer Project

This month we enjoyed a presentation on the Tank Farm Sewer Project recently constructed in San Luis Obispo. Presenters from City of San Luis Obispo included Bud Nance, Collection System Supervisor, Jennifer Metz, Utilities Project Manager, and David Hix, Wastewater Division Manager. This project included abandonment of two existing sewer lift stations and construction of a new regional lift station. New construction included approximately two miles of gravity sewer line (ranging in depth from 8-ft to 20-ft) and approximately one mile of 16-inch force main. The new regional lift station is located on the north side of Tank Farm Road, midway between Higuera and Broad Streets. The pipelines were installed in major City streets, Caltrans right-of-way, suspended from the Prado Road Bridge, and various environmentally sensitive areas. Unfortunately, the planned field trip for this meeting was canceled due to heavy rain, but the great presentation definitely made up for it.

Legislative Update

This month Mr. Richard Markuson from the Pacific Advocacy Group based in Sacramento spoke to the ASCE lunch group regarding current and upcoming legislation affecting engineers in California. Richard is the Chief Lobbyist for Region 9 ASCE. Richard's main focus is keeping ASCE's Region 9 Directors and Government Affairs Committee apprised of the happenings in Sacramento. His discussion covered topics such as the new water bill, the legislative fly-in and other interesting things going on with ASCE and Sacramento.

Hollister Bridge Field Trip

The ASCE lunch group enjoyed a tour of the new Hollister Bridge at Camp San Luis Obispo. The Hollister Bridge is a key component of the western entrance to Camp San Luis Obispo. The project replaced a WWII era timber bridge with a new concrete bridge. Construction started the summer of 2009 with the bridge scheduled to be open the beginning of December 2009.

City of Santa Maria Library

Shad Springer, City of Santa Maria, discussed the Santa Maria Public Library. This project received Honorable Mention by the Los Angles Section for the 2009 Outstanding Architectural Engineering Project. This project is the final phase of the new public library complex project. The project consisted of a 59,850 square foot, two-story, steel framed structure with associated site improvements and landscaping between Broadway and McClelland Street. The previous phases of the project included demolition of several buildings on-site, the relocation and remodeling of a historically important building, and construction of a multi-level parking structure.

Our Water, Our Future

Steven Tanaka, P.E., Director of Water Resources at the Wallace Group, will present a topic entitled "Our Water, Our Future". The presentation will focus on global, national, state-wide and local water issues, and the importance of water recycling and water conservation to secure our future water needs. The presentation will also provide overviews of two large-scale water recycling projects recently presented at WateReuse Association Conferences, including agricultural reuse at the Monterey Regional Wastewater Pollution Control Agency (MRWPCA) facility in Monterey County, and the Orange County Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) project for indirect potable water reuse in Southern California.

Los Osos CSD Water System

In March 2005, Los Osos Community Services District received a $5 million dollar low interest loan from the California Infrastructure and Economic Development Bank to pay for first priority capital improvement projects that were identified in their 2002 Water Master Plan. In January 2009, the District will wrap up the final stages of this almost 4 year long project. The low interest loan help to fund various improvements including new water services, water tank rehabilitation, booster station upgrade, pressure zone expansion, a new well, and water main upgrades. Come join us at Marie Callender%’s to hear about the six projects and their unique and challenging components from Wallace Group (Program Managers, Design Engineer, and Inspector) and Penfield & Smith (Design Engineer, Construction Manager, and Inspector).
