We had a wonderful guided tour of the planes and all the restoration projects going on in the hangar. My thanks to our guide and to YAM for such royal treatment. We took our daughter Elizabeth, who is living in Edinburgh, Scotland, and her friend Mike, who were here for a visit.

2009 White Sands

We arrived just before sunset so had a very short time to spend in the park. The sunset light on the white dunes of gypsum, it is not sand, was breathtaking. This is one place to which I definitely want to return and see it in full day light. And see sunset here again.

2009 Pima Air and Space Museum

The Air and Space Museum conducts tours to the Davis Monthan Air Force Base Salvage yard, commonly refered to by civilians as the "bone yard". This is the place where the B-52s, which were destroyed (wings cut off) by order of treaty with the USSR, are stored. But they also store thousands of air worthy aircraft and salvage parts used for repair all over the world. There are also dies, jigs, fixtures, and other tooling stored for possible future use. We were taken on a tour bus with a retired AF Colonel as our guide. His knowledge was amazing. He knew all about all of the planes and used no notes.

2009 Sky Island Scenic Byway - Coronado National Forest - norht of Tuscon, AZ

After visiting Organ Pipe National Monument we returned to Tuscon, both to see the east division of Saguaro National Park and the Pima Air and Space Museum. North of Tuscon we drove to the top of Mt Lemon in the Coronado NF. There we found a place to camp part way up. From there we went back down to Saguro NP.

Saguaro National Park is divided into the East and West unit by the city of Tuscon. We visited the west unit first camping in a county park there which was very nice. We later returned to the east unit.

We cut a White Spruce from our yard this year and it was huge. Taking pictures of a tree and its ornaments is harder than you might think. I even was driven to shaking and quivering at one point.

Bryce to Airstream factory at Jackson Center, Ohio

We left Bryce Canyon National Park at noon on Tuesday the 13, drove scenic Utah highway 12 through the north edge of Staircase - Escalante National Monument and then north to meet I-70. That night we stopped at a Wal-Mart parking lot in Glenwood Springs Colorado. Wednesday we drove 691 miles to Topeka Kansas where we found another Wal-Mart parking lot. Thursday we drove 711 miles to Jackson Center, Ohio and the Airstream factory

Bryce Canyon, Utah

We arived in Bryce Canyon nation Park on a cold snowy Monday, drove the scenic road to the top where it was snowing hard and returned to camp in the park campground for the night. The next morning was bright and sunny but still cold. We repeated part of our tour and then started back east after lunch. Bryce Canyon is miss named. It is actually the west edge of the Colorado Plateau which was uplifed in ancient geoloicl time and from which the work of water, time and wind have carved the west edge away creating the fascinating hoodoos of Bryce. The Virgin River has carved Zion Canyon and the Colorado has carved the Grand Canyon. Bryce exposes the youngest rock layers and the Grand Canyon the oldest.

Page, Arizona to Zion Canyon, Utah

If you are pulling a trailer or driving an RV the best - easiest way to enter Zion if from the west. We did not understand that. We drove from the shores of Lake Powel into Utah through the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument then through Knab Utah to the gate of the park. The campground on the east side of the tunnel was full and Richard did not want to tow the trailer through the tunnel, which requires a fee and an escort. So we turned back to Knab and went south back into Arizona through the Piute Indian Reservation then back into Utah through Hurricane to enter Zion from the West. We finally found accomodation at a motel that also had an RV park. Those two nights cost more than all the other camping fees for the whole six weeks of the trip.

Monument Valley Arizona

When we left Canyon De Chelly we drove through the Navajo reservation to Monument Valley. The Silver Dog House was left in their RV parking area and we paid $7 to drive the self guided tour through the park. The massive sandstone formations are a result cracks formed by uplift, and then water widening the cracks to leave the monumental sandstone formations sitting on the now flat plain.

Canyon De Chelly, Arizona

The Monument is located within the boundaries of the Navajo reservation. The land is owned by the Navajo who live here but the tourist visitation is managed by the Department of the Interior.

Cactus and other pricly plants in Central Arizona

Southern Arizona is full of prickly plants. The desert was in bloom, not only Cactus and Cholla were but wildflowers too. We spent the night at a huge development along Roosevelt Lake and almost had the plaace to ourselves.

Greybull Wyoming- Hawkins and Powers Aviation

HAWKINS & POWERS FLEET FOR LIQUIDATION Feb 2006 More than 60 aircraft at the Greybull, Wyoming, location. Included are multiple examples of Lockheed C-130A Hercules, Boeing KC-97s, Consolidated PrMY Privateers, Fairchild C-119s and others including single examples of a Fairchild C-82, Fairchild F-27, Lockheed L-18, Douglas A-26. A large inventory of B-25 and other spare parts. A pioneer in aerial fire fighting, H&P was founded in 1969 by co-owners Dan Hawkins and Gene Powers. Over the years, the company has grown to become one of the nation's leading providers of fire fighting services, aircraft, and equipment to the USDA Forest Service and other federal and state agencies as well as local municipalities in combating brush and wildfires. Driving from Greybull up US 14 to the top of the Bighorn National Forest. The campground at Tie Flume. The top of the mountains toward the Medicine Wheel on US 14A. The drive down 14A to Lovell to get Duncan and then east on Us14 leaving the Bighorn mountains headed for home.

2007 Beartooth National Forest

August 1 - August 5, 2007 Beartooth National Forest camp ground on US 212 about 14 miles west of Red Lodge Montana. On the map the road which we drove and that you see in my pictures is the thin gray line west of the Beartooth Highway US 212. The shorter more squiggly line to the west of that is the road to the top of Hell Roaring Plateau. One we decided NOT to drive with the truck. We decided we would want a 4 wheeler even though there were other trucks which had made the drive. We could see them later from the top of the Beartooth Highway. Those pictures I will post in another album. I have marked the campground on the map.

Bufflao Bill Historical Center at Cody, Wyoming

The Buffalo Bill Historical Center is much more than an art museum. There are five winds dedicated to different parts of the history of the west. The art museum was my favorite and I learned on our first day there that I could bring my camera. These pictures are from our second day at the Historical Center. There are also four other wings. One the Buffalo Bill wing which is far more than a tribute to the man. It is a historical record of the west during his life time. This man was much more than just the Wild West Show. There is an American Indian museum, full of beautiful Indian art and also is an historical museum. There is a Natural History wing which is magnificently done. I will take my camera in there the next time we go. There is also a Firearms wing which has an immense collection of firearms. This is a place to which I want to return. Cody is a nice "town" at the foot of the Beartooth Mountains

2007 Bighorn Basin, Wyoming

Lovell is at the northern end of the Bighorn Basin and our ultimate destination to collect our new puppy. However the pictures here were taken from the south along US 16 to the north along US 14 and 14A and along the east and west faces.
