Down the Green River with John Wesley Powell and Ed Abby - Canyonlands NP, Utah May 2010

A photo journal. Click on the first image and then scroll through the pictures to read the text as you go. Every trip needs a destination or purpose. Mine, on this trip, was to find an exceptional canyon Ed Abby described in his book "The Journey Home". Mud Hole Canyon was the tongue-in-cheek name Abby gave to a beautiful canyon his party discovered on their 1971 float trip down the Green River. "Because of the lovely things it contained" Abby "preferred not to specify its location". So armed with a river map, some topo maps and Abby's book I set out in search of Mud Hole Canyon to see if it was as beautiful as Abby described it 40 years earlier. I also planned to see and do many other things along the way in Utah, Colorado and Kansas. So join me as I canoe down the Green River, visit Arches and Mesa Verde National Parks and then return home off-the-beaten-path across S. Colorado and S. Kansas. Okefenokee - Land of Fire and Water – Wandering in the Swamp 2008

Heading for the Okefenokee Swamp I visited New Orleans, the AL/FL Gulf Coast, finally arriving at GA's Stephen Foster St. Pk. 17 miles inside the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. I camped and wandered for several days then headed north for the mountains of N. GA and on to visit my sister in NC. We had a great time revisiting some of our favorite places where we grew up. Leaving there, I crossed TN, KY, and IL pausing along the way at the Wild and Scenic Rivers Visitor Center in Van Burren MO and taking a long fun break at Bass Pro in Springfield. I examining a thousand things, only buying a $22 pair of kayaking paints and a Mucho Espresso con Leche to power me on home - So many hours of education and entertainment for so little money! I grabbed some good BBQ across the street and headed north for home. Arriving 6 lbs lighter than when I left - must have been the BBQ and delicious fried chicken in Fargo GA - a very happy guy! Who says you can't have your cake and eat it too?

Big Bend National Park - West Texas

Big Bend National Park is truly a vast, specular and fascinating place. The pictures here were taken on a series of trips from 2004 to 2009. In the early 80's I was in San Angelo on a business trip. Flying back home I sat by a 70 year old rancher that grew up on a ranch in Big Bend. His passion for BB and his stories about the place and his life growing up there fascinated me. About ten years later I finally made it to BB. After two weeks of camping and wandering the back roads and trails I was hooked. I've been going back there ever since every chance I get. To get to BB you really have to want to - it's way off the beaten path. BBNP is about the size of Rhode Island, is one of our least visited and yet most revisited (a telling statistic) national parks - about 300,000 visitors/yr.

Red Bud Hill - Our Gardens

A little of everything for easy care, no soil, and very little water. "Plant what grows here!" The hill pretty much takes care of itself. Yet, the hill is always changing. My gardens are always in flux which in turn causes more changes in the nature of the rest of the hill. Sometimes my influence has not been for the good but I live here too so I try to compromise. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge - SW Oklahoma 2008

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge stablished in 1901 is managed by the Fish and Wildlife Service. The "59,020 acre Refuge hosts a rare piece of the past - a remnant mixed grass prairie, an island where the natural grasslands escaped destruction because the rocks underfoot defeated the plow. The Refuge provides habitat for large native grazing animals such as American bison, Rocky Mountain elk, and white-tailed deer. Texas longhorn cattle also share the Refuge rangelands as a cultural and historical legacy species. More than 50 mammal, 240 bird, 64 reptile and amphibian, 36 fish, and 806 plant species thrive on this important refuge. Wheels of the Past - They all were a blast!

I have always had an irrational attachment to machines, especially cars, motorcycles and kayaks of all types. Unfortunately I couldn't afford any planes or trains. These machines may be just "things" but these in particular gave/give me pleasure, and some frustration too. . I don't have scans of my old pictures yet so for now I'll just use some stock photos as place holders until I get around to doing some scans.

Endangered Pallid Sturgeon Sampling Project 20100406

Each year the USFWS attempts to catch rare pallid sturgeon brood-stock along the Missouri River for their reintroduction efforts. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to assist the MDC crew near Ft. Osage during this years sampling season To date, they have stocked 100,000 pallids in the lower river from hatchery efforts. However, it has become harder to find "local" pallids for genetic purposes in stocking. On this trip we caught 370 fish total - 324 shovelnose and two pallid sturgeon plus several catfish, buffalo and drum. The 7'Th Annual WildLands Battle at Rocky Point Glade in Swope Park - Nov 7'h 2009

KC WildLands volunteers gathered at Rocky Point Glade Nov.7, 2009 for the 7’Th Annual Exotic Honeysuckle Removal Day. Rocky Point was one of five KCWildLands sites targeted this year. Rockhurst, KU, UHG, UMKC, & MMN Volunteers cut, sawed and pulled shrub honeysuckle around the glade & treated the stumps to kill the root systems. After the “battle” Bill Fessler led an educational tour through the restored glade area so the volunteers could see first hand the importance of the glade & see how much has been accomplished over the years by people like them, KCWL, KCMOPR, MDC and other groups and individuals. For 6 years, remarkable progress has been made by volunteers in removing honeysuckle from these natural areas - a great community workday & as you can see from the photos everyone had a great time and truly “made a difference”. Current River Trip 2005

The Current is a good Ozark river to float year round. The springs along the river keep the water level up even when other Ozark rivers more dependent on rain are too low to float.
