Around Salzburg

It was a beautiful fall day and I met up with Olya a couch surfer. She was in Salzburg for a few days. It was great to hang out with her and hear her stories. Her are some sceanic shots around Salzburg. We don't really have snow yet. A bit in the mountains, but nothing down at my level.

Glöcklerlauf

The 5th of January was Glöcklerlauf in Salzkammergut. This is a celebration to bring in the New Year. The fire departments, and boy scouts dress in white and wear large hats made of paper lit with candles. The kids have smaller hats. It were pretty. It is called the Glöcklerlauf: Glocke: is bell. Glockle is a person who wears a bell. And lauf means run. Not only do they wear hats, but they also have massive cow bells on their backs which are constantly ringing. So it sounds like a huge herd of cattle have invaded the city. The festivities started at 5PM. I thought they started at 6, and so missed seeing the Three Kings ride through the streets, and sing, because I was in the middle of a run. The different groups parade through the streets. They run in figure eights, and then when the leader gives a signal they stop and kneel down to welcome in the new year. Salzburg Christmas Market

Matt another teaching assistant from Vocklabruck and I decided to hit up the Christmas Market in Salzburg. They were very very full of people. We enjoyed some Glühwein, pastries, bought some christmassy thing. We also did some side touristing in the catacombs. They are built into the cliffs on the side of the mountain, and have a great view of the city. After we were Christmas marketed out we headed in the direction of the train station, but we got side tracked when Matt noticed a Phillies sport team t-shirt. He started talking to the wearer of this shirt. Ended up being a group of American solders. They were dentist from an American base in Italy, and in Salzburg for the day. We decided to drink a quick beer. It was my first time at Augistiner. Amazing. Sadly I do not have any pictures of it. Will have to fix that problem next time I go there.
