Replica Spitfire full scale with Allison 12 cylinder....the sound of the flyby was awesome. Some early Mustang must have traded for his RollsRoyce Merlin ;-)
Right part of Salton Sea Picture from about 50 miles out, heading towards Bermuda Dunes, CA at the right end of the Sea
Left part of the Salton Sea picture in CA from about 50 miles out...its big.
Bermuda Dunes at the left and Palm Springs, CA at the right, flying over Freeway 10 off the left cowl cheek under the glare at 7,500' MSL.
Estrella Mountains center, Estrella glider port is little light area just below half way up my fuel guage wire.
Following Freeway 10 at 6,500' with aquaduct criss crossing the 10. Its a good 90 miles to the mountains in the distance which is my Blythe fuel stop. At least if I went down I won't be thirsty.
Lake Elsinore Airport CA89 , CA
RF4D Fuel tank cap and fuel guage marked. Its 3/32" music wire that is springy and does not bend or kink (from Hobby Shop). The bands at 1/4 tank intervals are marked by "solder tinning" and wiping excess solder away so it does not catch on anything.
Prop 54x30 tapered to 1.5" wide at tip with P. Lipps "Slash Tip". Modified to increase RPM by reducing drag out by the tip. Tests pending to evaluate results. I'm shooting for 700 fpm climb rate.
Some Spitfire pilot said this plane flies like a poor mans spitfire. Definately a compliment to the well harmonized handling. I'm spoiled now!
Old fuel tank leak repair. Note the lifting material detached from the tank walls
Old leak patch mostly scraped off.
Carswell Epoxy Tank Sealer applied, withstands 100% alcohol fuels. It was liberally applied in the area of the leak and the tank pressurized for a few minutes to force the expoxy into the weld pinholes, then more epoxy brushed on top.
The epoxy was applied liberally by brush and set after 30 minutes. The surface was prepped with acetone and dried prior to application. It will be allowed to cure for 3 days before fuel is put in the tank.
