Ntshe House Wedding Day Thursdays

Ntshe House, the office building I work in, is a government building full of all different kinds of government departments. Every Thursday, the office that verifies and legalizes marriages allows couples to bring their family and friends to witness them taking vows and officially getting married. The couples ususally have a big celebration shortly thereafter, often times in their home village under a huge tent.

EBP 2012-2013

Our Evidence Based Planning workshop. The goal is to work with stakeholders in planning the proposal for the 2012-2013 year of HIV/AIDS activity funding. Last year it was a retreat, this year there's not enough funding so we get to stay in Ftown! A really productive time though, and even moreso since realizations on the absurdity of some aspects of the process began to surface.

Blood Donor Day 2011

It's the annual honoring of blood donors! Donating blood is huge in Botswana, and aside from the obvious benefits of helping to save people's lives, it encourages protecting oneself from contracting HIV. Members are encouraged at young ages to "pledge 25," or donate blood at least 25 times in their lifetime. Many go on to donate more, and one guy at this event was honored with donating over 40 times. Since it is not possible to donate blood if you're HIV+, the pledging tends to make kids think twice about unprotected sex.

Trip To Gabs

Warm welcomes, great stew, a good lodge but a better time staying with a friend. An actual art scene in Botswana (that doesn't include cheesy Big Five souvenirs), blind and poorly-kept horses, split pea soup, Barcelona v Manchester, meeting Texans and other Internationals, posing as UN Security, crime scenes, mediating drama, eating mussels, curry, caipirinas, fine whiskey, bottomless coffee, purchasing martini glasses and a blender, I could go on... Oh, and an official Peace Corps appt.

Night at the Pans - Sydney's Birthday

During the dry season the salt pans look like a neverending scene of nothing but white, hard sand. During the rainy season (or end of it, like during this event), the pans fill about a foot and a half with water, but maintain the same depth no matter how far into it you wade. In addition, sunsets there are awesome.

HIV Candlelight Vigil 2011

Francistown Districts commemoration of the international HIV/AIDS Candlelight Vigil. Though it was oddly held at 11 a.m. on a Monday (usually held at dusk and on a weekend), we still had a great turnout. Led by Francistown Network of Support Groups and the District AIDS Office.

Peaceful Protest at Ntshe House

I would guess 1000 people were in the parking lot of Ntshe House (my office building) on Thursday, April 14th to formally hand in the petition for a 16% increase in salary. These are government workers who haven't had a raise in over three years, despite some inflation in the country. This is a national protest, and starting the next Monday will commence a 10 day strike.

Midway Island

So my flight was scheduled to go from Taiwan to Japan to Houston, TX. It did, eventually, but not before making an emergency 13 hour landing on Midway Island. Apparently it was also the season for the tiny island to host one million nesting albatross.
