Teardrop & Flat Style Streetlights

As Austin's streetlight frames need replacing over time, we replace the traditional "teardrop" style with a flat style that projects the light downward rather than to the sides. To date, about 40% of Austin's streetlights have the flat glass style frame.

Cleaning Ash from Bastrop Area Transmission Towers

Austin Energy crews have been washing ash from devices that connect transmission lines to towers located in Bastrop. The towers are up to 110 feet tall. The cleaning is precautionary before the lines can be re-energized. Large trees burned by the fire and in danger of falling into lines are also being removed. Power that normally flows on the lines has been shifted to other lines until the work is completed. There are no electric system outages associated with cleaning the power lines.

Final Transformer Arrives on Mueller Substation Site

A new substation that will be powering Mueller and surrounding neighborhoods is on schedule to activate next month. Citizens designed the wall and landscaping that will enclose the station. Yesterday, the second of two transformers arrived. Transmission feeds high-voltage power into the transformer where it is stepped down and delivered to nearby neighborhoods through large power lines that exit each transformer. Photos show the arrival of the new transformer and crews setting up the substation equipment.

2011 Public Power Lineworkers Rodeo - Nashville, TN

Some 54 three-man teams and 73 apprentice linemen from more than two dozen electric utilities participated in the 11th Annual Public Power Lineworkers Rodeo in Nashville March 19, 2011. The teams participate in events that mirror the work done by electric utility crews every day -- testing skills, knowledge, speed and safety.

2011 Austin Energy Regional Science Festival

The Austin Energy Regional Science Festival is one of Texas’ largest regional science fairs with over 3,500 students from 1st through 12th grade. It encourages and rewards innovative student research and provides scientists, engineers and other professionals a chance to volunteer in the community. This year's festival was held February 23-26. These photos consist of Elementary Division projects; the Exploring Science booths for elementary students; Elementary Division awards; Jr. and Sr. Division projects; and Jr. and Sr. Division awards.

Austin Energy Employees Help Sort "Coats for Kids"

Today 25 employees from Austin Energy’s Customer Service Management group volunteered for the 24th Annual Coats for Kids sponsored by The Junior League of Austin, Jack Brown Cleaners, KASE 101, and KVUE. The group sorted through thousands of coats and prepared them for distribution day which is this coming Saturday at Palmer Events Center. Last year more than 30,000 new and gently used coats were distributed to eligible Central Texas families at last year’s Coats for Kids event. More info: http://www.jlaustin.org

Chuy's "Children Giving to Children" Parade

Austin Energy vehicles and staff participated in the 22nd Annual "Children Giving to Children" parade in Austin hosted by Chuy's Restaurant! The "Austin Energy: Lighting Austin's Holidays!" decorated bucket truck and outfitted employees was one of the more than 25 floats and groups to march in the traditional parade to benefit the Blue Santa program which provides holiday gifts to children of needy families.

National Night Out 2010 - Austin Kickoff Event

STARFlight, the Austin Police Mounted Patrol, EMS, energy-efficient lighting as a cost-effective way to deter crime, and neighborhood safety tips highlighted the Austin kickoff of National Night Out yesterday at Southpark Meadows. About 300 area neighborhoods held evening block parties, where residents met and learned ways to work together to prevent crime in their neighborhoods.

Sand Hill Energy Center - Water Utilized from Rising Colorado River

The Sand Hill Energy Center turned the Central Texas flooding last week into at least one positive by pumping 1.2 million gallons of free water from the rising Colorado River over an 18-hour period for its 300-megawatt power plant operations. When the river rises above that needed by the Lower Colorado River Authority for downstream water obligations, Sand Hill can pump water from the river for free until river levels normalize. Normally, Sand Hill purchases either reclaimed water from an adjacent wastewater treatment plant or even more expensive potable water for its generation needs. By using 1.2 million gallons of free river water, Sand Hill not only saved money but also helped the City conserve water equivalent to that used by a half dozen Austin homes year round.

Austin Community College Lineworker Recruitment Fair

About 200 people, including employees of Austin Energy and other electric utilities, attended a lineworker recruitment fair at Austin Community College today. ACC officially kicked-off Certificate and Associate Degree programs to train new lineworkers. Nationwide, 30 to 40 percent of electric industry employees are eligible to retire over the next 5 years.

Habitat for Humanity - Austin Energy participates

A contingent of Austin Energy employees has volunteered to help build a home with Habitat for Humanity. Austin Energy also contributed $65,000 toward the construction of the home in northeast Austin. Estimated completion: summer 2010

Austin's Largest Solar Roof Top System Going Up

Installation of a revolutionary thin film solar product is under way at the Austin Water Utility’s Glen Bell Service Center in Southeast Austin. Once complete, it will be the largest solar roof top system in Austin, and also the first to use thin film technology. Glen Bell is expected to receive around 30 percent of its power from solar energy, and save $17,000 on electric bills each year.

Transmission Line Replacement on Princeton Drive

Austin Energy Linemen from St. Elmo replaced 12 poles and 11 spans of wire in February 2010 on the densely wooded 2700 block of Princeton Drive in Southeast Austin to increase reliability, enhance aesthetics and reduce tree trimming costs. Four lines (known as open-wire secondary) that stretched the length of the street were removed and replaced with a single triplex cable.

Zilker Botanical Gardens Solar LED Project

AE Electrical Maintenance and Parks crews worked together this past week to begin adding lighting to 1,500 feet (five football fields long) of the nature trail in the Zilker Botanical Gardens with LED light fixtures powered by solar panels. Electrical Maintenance laid the circuitry and will install almost 40 6-watt LED lights. The lights will be powered by two 100-amp-hour batteries that will be charged during the day by two pole-mounted 200-watt solar panels. The lighting will provide a sustainable energy source without the need for overhead wires running through the gardens and trails. The project is expected to be completed by the end of March.

2010 Austin Energy Regional Science Fest Middle & High School Winners

Vista Ridge High School in Leander and Murchison Middle School in Austin were “Sweepstakes” winners at the Austin Energy Regional Science Festival at the Palmer Events Center in Austin tonight. The two schools respectively had the largest number of projects placing 1st through 5th in competition that advances winners to the state science fair. Vista Ridge outperformed 18 other high schools, Murchison was best among 37 middle schools.Winners for the individual projects include Max Wimberley of the Liberal Arts & Science Academy and Matthew Chang of Chang Homeschool. The Best of Fair Team Project award went to Shantanu Banerjee and Varun Koneru of Westwood High School.

2010 Austin Energy Regional Science Festival - Middle & High School Projects

More than 100 high school and middle school students who won first, second, or third place at the Austin Energy Regional Science Festival now advance to the ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair in San Antonio, April 9-12. The winners were tops in 17 science categories and two team categories during the festival held at the Palmer Events Center in Austin, Feb. 25-27. Murchison Middle School and Vista Ridge High School were the regional festival’s Sweepstakes winners, each scoring the highest number of points accumulated from first, second and third place science project wins. Three Best of Fair awards were also presented to two Senior Division individuals and one team project chosen out of all first place winners. Winners for the individual projects include Max Wimberley of the Liberal Arts & Science Academy and Matthew Chang of Chang Homeschool. The Best of Fair Team Project award went to Shantanu Banerjee and Varun Koneru of Westwood High School.

Six More Austin Area Schools Get Solar Arrays

Through the highly successful Solar for Schools Program, Austin Energy has set an ambitious goal of completing nearly 50 solar installations at schools in the Austin Energy service area by the end of 2010. The utility recently completed an additional six schools, bringing the total number to 28. The estimated savings for those 28 schools is 120,744 kWh annually and is expected to reduce Austin Energy’s peak demand by 17 kW. Another 20 solar systems are expected to be installed at schools throughout the year.
