That is the message that Dachau Memorial is trying to send across.
At the entrance of the memorial
Arbeit Macht Frei (Work sets you free) - this is what they said to the unfortunate souls who were forced to enter this concentration camp. It was a wrongly guided hope. A hope of freedom, of liberation, of a life of dignity.
Another memorial plaques in the camp. The message has been put in four languages to make sure that it gets across to as many as possible.
"Hope" These words were painted in big letters on the roof of the maintenance building (Wirtschaftsgebäude).
Pain Suffering and Hopes It's all captured in this piece of art by the artist. It's all what Dachau stood for those thousands who gave up their life amongst the high walls and electrified fences of this camp.
The Freedom Line This is where the 'freedom' of the inmates of this camp ended. Behind these lines was a world that was totally different.
Inside the Barracks These were designed to bed 50 inmates. In the end, 300-400 inmates were cramped inside.
10m*100m That's precisely the size each barrack was. The symmetry with which this place was designed was remarkable.
