Dahau concentration camp, Germany

Dahau is a personal story for me. In April 1941 my grandfather Krstivoje Ognjanovic, as a 27 year old POW from Serbia (at that time Yugoslavia) was taken by Germans to Dahau, tatooed and than moved to an small labor camp somwhere in Poland. Just two months after his imprisonment, in June 1941, my grandmother delievered twins, one of them was my father. After the war, grandpa talked just sporadically about pain and suffering that he endured during those horrific time for Europe. This story of Nazism in Germany and Dahau concentration camp is so horrific; thus all my photos, other than those purposly left to be colored, are in black and white.

Trsic village, Serbia

Trsic, a village 9km away from Serbian city Loznica, is a picturesque place also the birthplace of Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic. Vuk was the Serbian language reformer and great contributor to the Serb national literature. In the 19th century he travelled around Serb speaking provinces in the Balkans and gathered poems, novels and proverbs and published them in the format known today. Thus, he is regarded as the father of the modern Serbian language. His birth house and the village were recently converted into ethno area with many authentic 19th century items in his home and throughout the village.

Perucac, Serbia

Perucac is a peaceful little town on the bank of river Drina in Western Serbia, bordering Republic of Serbska in Bosnia. It is known by the 54 km long manmade lake with the Hydroelectric plant. Located right blow of Tara National Park, and within the slopes of green mountains, the lake and river Drina are true natural jewels of Serbia.

Devil's City-Djavolja Varos

The only place in Serbia nominated for the Natural Vander, Djavolja Varos is a true natural miracle. It is located in Toplica, South Eastern part of Serbia on the edges of Radan mountain, well known by its natural springs and geological wealth. Djavolja Varos consists of 200 earth figures, some of them reaching 20m heigh. Legends are created surrounding this unusual natural effect. Geologies are saying that while the erosion is destroying some of the figures, the new ones are also being created. For sure Djavolja Varos is a natural phenomenon that everyone should visit.

Justiniana Prima, Serbia

Justiniana Prima ("Carichin Grad" or Czar's city in Serbian) is a Byzantine city located in Southern Serbia near town of Lebane. Built by the Roman Emperor Justinian I, on the top of the hill with magnificent view, the city was positioned close to his home-village. City was divided into three parts, and included spas, streets, merchant squares, palaces, military posts and Christian churches. Remaining of the floor mosaics are preserved in the upper city, while the pillars still have Roman decorations. Justiniana Prima existed from 530’s to 615, when it was destroyed by Avar invasion. Roman emperor Justinian reformed the Byzantium, returned the glory of the empire and built one of the most significant shrines, Aya Sofia in Constantinople, today’s Istanbul.

Sofia, Bulgaria

Sofia, a vibrant Balkan city with plenty to do, experience and see. On the main shopping Vitosha street in Sofia, fashionable girls, couples with children and european tourists and expats were strolling down the street and sipping coffee of the neighbouring restaurants and the cafes. It was the last weekend of March and one can feel the upcoming spring. Just several miles away, in the city background, the snow was dominating over the surrounding mountains. In the same way as weather, Sofia is the country of contrasts that shocase duality of human nature. What else can be expected from the city that carries the name " wisdom" (sofia).

NATO Aggression Against Serbia - 10 year anniversary

Forgive, but Never Forget. This album is dedicated to all innocent victims like three year old Milica Rakic, from Batajnica, who was deadly hit by NATO bomb in her bedroom in March of 1999. This is also for 88 other children and more than two thousand civilians from Serbia killed by NATO during the three month bombing campaign. They are not and they will never be just a “collateral damage”, as western media used to called them in 1999.

Toplica, Serbia

Sa istočnih vrhova Kopanika, pogled se pruža na očarajavajuću zelenu i pitomu dolinu, u čijem centralnom delu meandrira reka po kojoj i region u Južnoj Srbiji nosi ime Toplica. Zdrava, tiha, izolovana od gradske gužve, Toplica je tradicionalna, privlačna, i okrepljujuća. Na severu ove pitome doline, prekrivena pašjacima i slivovima planinskih reka, je planina Jastrebac. Južni obod Toplice je oivičen planinama, od kojih jedna skriva svetski poznato čudo prirode Đavolju Varoš. Na svom istočnom delu ka Južnoj Moravi, Toplica se širi u zatalasastu dolinu na čijim se brdima uzgajaju poznate višnje Marelice, i čiji vinogradi svake jeseni daju bogate prinose grožđa od kojih se pravi prokupačko vino. Na istoku, preko brdskog kopaoničkog predela, Toplica se naslanja na Kosovo i Rašku. Ekološki ovo je jedan od najočuvanijih delova Srbije.

Potsdam is the German Versaille, a place where German kings and leaders have built their summer palaces. Open door museum for the art lovers. This historic city is famous by the Potsdam Allied WWII conference. Unfortunatelly, the city was badly damaged during the British WWII bombing campaign.

Ohrid Lake, Macedonia

Lake Ohrid in Macedonia, is the deepest lake in Europe at 290m and one of the world's oldest. It is being filled with water from Prespa lake, and the rivers and underground canals. The lake has unique flora and fauna. Ohrid is truly magnificent and spiritual place. Old City and surroundings have 365 churches, evidenced even in the 14th century by Evliya Çelebi in his travel books. Throughout Middle Ages Ohrid has been called the Slavic Jerusalem. Under Byzantium, Ohrid became the Episcopal centre of Macedonia. The first Slavic university was founded in 893 by Bishop Kliment of Ohrid, also a place where St. Cyril and St. Methodius worked, and from the 10th century until 1767 the patriarchate of Ohrid was seated. According to explorers, this is where Apostle Paul also resided. Lihnidos (Ohrid) was on the Roman Via Egnatia, which connected the Adriatic to the Aegean. On the hill above the city, near the Samuilo’s fortress lays the Roman amphitheatre and the old town.

Serbia, The Valley of the Kings

The valley of river Ibar hides the ancient Serbian cultural treasure. Some of the oldest Serbian orthodox churches, built in the Byzantine style are located along the banks of Ibar. The two UNESCO protected churches Studenica and Sopocani are unique blends of Byzantine and Roman architecture. Near the oriental city of Novi Pazar, the remaining of ancient city of Ras can be found, where Serbian princes established the Serbian statehood. The Stefan Nemanja’s Djurdjevi Stupovi church and the Gradac Monastery, built by the Serbian Queen of the French origin in the 13th century, are all true masterpieces of culture and art. The ancient military fortresses and the blend of Islamic and Orthodox cultures demonstrate the blend of civilization merged in the Balkans. Ibar Valley from St. Sava’s Zica monastery through churches of Old Pavlica and Sopocani are rare places in the world where spirituality of Orthodox Christianity could be experienced the first hand.

Evening Walk at Manasija

Dedicated to the Holy Trinity, Manasija monastery was founded in 1407 by Stefan Lazarevic; the son of Serbian Czar Lazar who died at Kosovo Battle in 1389. The church was built in a crucial movement in history during Ottoman Turk invasion of the Balkans. It was built in a secluded area of Eastern Serbia by the Serbs fleeing the Turkish takeover of Kosovo and Serbia. In contrast to all other churches, Manasija is surrounded by massive walls and fortified with eleven defensive towers making it a stronghold. The monastery is also known by its unique library and manuscript workshops where books were copied. Today, the whole area is a place of peace, spirituality and tranquility.

Baptism

Stefan and Dushan got baptized in Belgrade’s Saborna Crkva. Godfathers, Tatjana and Richard, grandparents Mila, Rade and Miloje, and closest relatives and friends have attended the ceremony. In the atmosphere of peace and serenity, Stefan and Dushan got a hold on their protector angels. Surprisingly, they behaved well throughout the ceremony. In the classic and baroque style Belgrade’s Saborna Crkva was built in 1837, and is splendidly decorated. The church is also a resting place for Serbian Czar Urosh, Kings of Obrenovic Dynasty and prominent Serbians from 19th century, Dositej Obradovic and Vuk Karadzic.

Ana Karenina and Serbia

Even though the people in Serbia consider the love story of Ana and Vronski from the novel „Ana Karenjina,“ as the slavic version of Romeo and Juliet, just a few of them know where the „Slavic Verona“ is located. In the very heart of Serbia, near sleepy town of Aleksinac, there is a small village called Gornji Adrovac, which keeps the secret of on the Count Nikolay Rajevski, the man who inspired Tolstoy to create the Count Vronski in the famous love Russina novel "Ana Karenina."

Kosovo is Serbia - Demonstrations (21st of February, 2008)

More than 300,000 people turned to central Belgrade to demonstrate against separation of Kosovo from Serbia. The Serbs have strong emotional ties to the province, which is considered to be the craddle of their nationhood. After unilateral declation of Independence on Feb. 17 without consent of the UN Security Councel, some countries led by the United States recognized Kosovo. Following the decision, demonstrations against Kosovo's seccession broke out throughout Serbia and countries with Serbian population (Bosnia, Montenegro, Macedonia and around the world). The largest event took place in Belgrade and turned violent. After the peaceful demonstrations, the embassies of the countries that recognized independence of Kosovo were the targets. The prime target was the US embassy, which was partly burnt. A young man also died within the US embassy. After several hours of violence, police re-establish the order.

The capital of Serbia and home of two milion positioned on hill where rivers Sava and Danube merge.One of the most ancient European capitals that remembers Celts, Romans, Slavs, Turks, Austrians and Serbs. It has been destroyed, invaded, burned, and bombed from the ancient times. But it was rebuilt and recovered many times. The city has open heart to all. On the surface it appears glumi and dark, but once descovered one can sense the energy and charm of the streets, parks, buildings, long bulevards, rivers and lakes that all make up the capital of Serbia.
