The Taizé Young Adult European Meeting in Rotterdam - Dec. 30th, 2010

The 33rd young adult European meeting will take place in the Netherlands. The first time for such a meeting to be held there, it will bring together many thousands of young adults in the city of Rotterdam. The birth place of Erasmus in the fifteenth century, in 2009 Rotterdam was named the European capital of youth and has shown great eagerness to welcome a stage of the pilgrimage of trust on earth. The Catholic and Protestant parishes of several cities around Rotterdam (like The Hague and Delft) will also be involved in welcoming the young adults. The Orthodox Church was represented by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope (Ecumenical Patriarchate), assistant of Metropolitan Panteleimon of Belgium.

In Ghent they visited the Saint Andrews orthodox church, the Castle, the Graslei, Saint Nicholas church, the Belfort, the Saint Bavonis Cathedral, the City Hall. In Bruges they visited the Béguinage, Saint John's Hospital, the church of the Holy Virgin (the Madonna of Michelangelo), the Chapel of the Holy Blood (were is a relic of Saint Basil), the Grand Place and the Saints Constantine & Helen orthodox church.

Solemn opening of the Centre of Orthodox Theology (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam). This new established Centre was blessed by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope in the presence of His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon of Belgium (Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and President of the Orthodox Bishops Conference of the Beneluw) and Their Excellencies Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia and Archbishop Gabriel of Comana, His Grace Bishop Maximos of Evmenia and many priests, officials and faithful. After the blessing, the Dean of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Amsterdam, Prof. Dr. Wim Janse welcomed all participants and introduced the speakers. The first was Metropolitan Panteleimon of Belgium who welcomed this Centre and spoke on the importance of Saint Maximos the Confessor, to whom the Centre has been dedicated. On Tuesday 12 October, representatives of the churches in Belgium and in Europe met with the Belgian EU-Presidency in Brussels. This meeting took place in the framework of Article 17 of the EU Treaty establishing a regular dialogue between churches and the EU. It also follows a well-established tradition of meetings between the churches and the rotating EU Council Presidencies. The Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme, received the church representatives for a one hour meeting at his residence.

Visit at the Great and Holy Church of Christ, the Mother Church, the Ecumenical Patriarchate - October 08-11, 2010 - His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope and Ambassador Marc Van den Reeck (soon Ambassador of Belgium in Greece). On Sunday they took part at the Divine Liturgy in the church of Saint Dimitrios (Kurtulus), where they have been welcomed by His Eminence Metropolitan Gennadios of Sassima. In the afternoon they attended the celebration of a wedding in the patriarchal church, presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos of Moschonissia. They were of course also received by His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

Visit of His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope to St Anthony's Greek Orthodox Monastery in Arizona (USA) - Sept. 28, 2010 - visit on the occasion of his participation at the IACAC-Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. The monastery is dedicated to St. Anthony the Great, the father of monasticism, the renowned 3rd century anchorite. There are different chapels. Elder Ephraim, a disciple of Elder Joseph the Hesychast, having restored and repopulated four Mt. Athos monasteries and having established several men’s and women’s monastic communities throughout Greece and North America, transferred six Athonite monks to the Sonoran Desert to start a new monastery. The Abbot is Archimandrite Païsios. The brother hood counts 45 members.

Historical Liturgy in the Monastery of Panagia Soumela in Pontus - Aug. 15, 2010 - Thousands of orthodox Christian faithful who journeyed to Soumela Monastery, built into a sheer cliff above the Black Sea forest, on Sunday to attend the first Divine Liturgy since ethnic Greeks were expelled in 1923. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, spiritual leader of the world’s 300 million orthodox christians, celebrated the Divine Liturgy to mark the Feast Day of the Virgin Mary. The faithful believe Jesus’s mother Mary was taken up to heaven on August 15 after her death. The historic service is part of a broader easing of religious restrictions in Muslim Turkey as Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan seeks to fulfil pledges to expand minority rights, which could also kickstart Turkey’s stalled European Union bid. © Photos: N. Official visit of HAH Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Bulgaria - July 2010 - Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew was on an official visit to Bulgaria half July 2010 to meet Bulgarian believers and official leaders. He arrived in Bulgarian city of Plovdiv to lead a special festive service on the occasion of St. Marina's day, which gathered senior clergy from different places. A miracle-working icon of St. Marina arrived from the Holy Land in Plovdiv's metropolitan church bearing her name. Sunday morning the Ecumenical Patriarch met Plovdiv intellectuals and artists and learned about the history of the city. Bartholomew spoke of the Orthodox Church strong and historical commitment to the support of arts. In the afternoon Patriarch Bartholomew went to Sofia, where he met Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov and the Patriarch Maxim of Bulgaria. © Pictures from different sources (N. His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch was represented by the Very Reverend Archimandrite Tikhon of Stavronikita (Mount Athos). The Patriarchate of Alexandria was represented by His Em. Metropolitan Theodoros of Heliopolis and the Church of Greece by V. Rev. Archimandrite Ignatios. Hierarchs who were present: Archbishop Ireneos of Crete, Metropolitans Damaskinos of Kydonia and Apokorono, Evsevios of Samos, Theoklitos of Florina and Amphilochios of Kissamos and Selinos and Bishops Athenagoras of Sinope, Evgenios of Knossos and Nicholas of Amathountos (Cyprus). Among the monks and nuns were present: Archimandrites Basilios Gondikakis (Iviron) and Chrysostomos, Abbot of Esphygmenou). Everything was fantastic organized by Mother Theoxeni and her Sisters.

Vespers were presided by Archpriest Jakov Markovic (Patriarchate of Serbia) and Deacon Ciprian Popescu (Ecumenical Patriarchate). A lecture was given by Dom Benoit Standaert. The celebration was organized by the a group of Roman-catholic and orthodox clerics.

The new Annunciation orthodox church of Antwerp, first orthodox parish in Belgium

The new Annunciation orthodox church of Antwerp (March 2010). The Annunciation orthodox parish is the oldest parish of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Belgium. The parish was founded in the year 1900 for the spiritual needs of the greek seamen and is since then situated in the 'Jan van Gentstraat' in Antwerp. The first priest was send by the Ecumenical Patriarchate and was Archimandrite Gennadios Themelis. Recently the church has completely been rebuilt in the same street. Here are some pictures of the new church, with the old iconostasis. The current priest is Oikonomos Angelos Kamalidis.
