As the cool wind blew over the mountain path, one shadow advanced slowly." / (middle-right): "This shadow moved silently through the wilderness. As the sun rose in the east, a lone young person and a horse emerged. The horse was carrying an object wrapped in a white cloth." / (lower-left): "The young person and the horse continued to walk through the wilderness, through the depressing pouring rain and under the scorching sun which burned and exhausted them. After walking for days, they saw a large bridge off in the far distance."]
Prologue page 2. [Translation (upper-right): "It took many days to reach the bridge, and seemingly longer to cross over it. A great shrine waited for them at the end." / (middle-left): "There was no one inside the shrine. As the young man walked into the interior, an altar came into view." / (lower-right): "When he reached the altar, the young man dismounted his horse, taking the object wrapped in white cloth with him, which appeared to be the remains of a girl. Quietly and gently, the young man placed the girl on the altar."]

Story part 1: After a long journey, Wander arrives at the Forbidden Lands with his horse, Agro. After a ride along the bridge that spans halfway across the Lands to its center, he arrives at the desolate Shrine of Worship and sets Mono down upon the altar. Emon narrates in an esoteric language about the Forbidden Lands. A few shadow creatures draw near, but Wander dispatches them simply by drawing his sword, catching Dormin's attention. Wander is assigned the task of slaying the sixteen colossi if Mono is to be revived.
(Right half of screenshots to the previous page.)
Story part 2: Wander defeats the Colossi one by one. Every time he does so, black tendrils flow into him and he collapses, finding himself in the Shrine of Worship when he wakes up. Wander is being followed by Emon, who appears close to the Forbidden Lands after the twelfth colossus is defeated. Before Wander can reach the final colossus, he must cross a collapsing bridge on Agro's back. Agro cannot make it in time, sacrificing himself to throw Wander safely to the other side. Wander watches helplessly as Agro falls into the canyon river below.
Story part 3: Wander kills the sixteenth and final colossus just as Emon and his men arrive. Emon watches in horror as the last giant idol lining the Shrine's walls explodes, signifying this defeat. He rushes over across the enormous hall to the altar where Mono lies, saying a few prayers; as he does, Wander appears in the main hall, cursed and corrupted by the black tendrils. Emon's men finish him off, but it is too late. A shadow covers Wander, and the other shadow creatures merge into the growing mass. Dormin has been resurrected.
Finale: Emon's men flee the Shrine in terror. As they ascend a spiral passage above a pool of water in the back room to escape, Emon utters an incantation and furiously throws Wander's sword into the pool. A whirlwind emerges from the waters, reducing Dormin to nothing but a shadowy figure of Wander before he is pulled in completely. The massive bridge spanning the Lands begins to collapse, and Emon's men just barely make it to safety. In the abandoned halls of the Shrine, Mono wakes up, revived. Agro, too, is alive, but his left back leg is broken, and he limps painfully into the shrine. Mono and Agro make their way to the basin at the back of the temple where the waters of the pool once stood, finding a horned baby inside it. Agro leads Mono up the spiral to where the bridge used to be, where they find a path leading still higher to a beautiful garden.
Controls when playing as Dormin in the end sequence
