“door of no return”- once a slave went through here, they were never expected to return to africa
used to be steps here as the way women would come down to the holding room
Room where families who had been seperated for months might meet before they're loaded onto a boat
Portuguese Church, located in the center of the slave castle...sickening
Elmina Slave Castle
A left-over weight that “disobedient” women would be chained to
balcony from the dutch church
how they could actually worship there, I cannot fathom
the govenor's balcony, where he would bring all the women out and then select one to rape
taking a moment to let the tour sink in
Kite hawk
Group shot at the castle with the fort in the background
shot for mom
you can see some of the old european architecture
Kari wondering if she could sew a sail of plastic bags like that
getting suckered into donating to a local futbol club
elmina town
town futbol game of course
not the mayor, the chief fisherman
entrance to slave castle
cell reserved for slave insubordinates...not expected to live as the classy decorations above the door would suggest
amen
cell for european insubordinates...much more cushy
this psalm talks about the Lord's dwelling place. The implication is that God only dwells in the church, not in the dungeons just under this church where all the slaves are. I nearly threw up when I heard the guide explain this.
View from Govenors balcony
way up to govenor's chamber
Dedication to some Portuguese General
