Central Europe GEOs gather in Sopron, Hungary

In November, GEO* missionaries serving in Europe met in Sopron, Hungary for a GEO Gathering. They celebrated life together, shared ministry ideas and celebrated the commissioning service of a GEO. *GEOs are globally-engaged in outreach for 1-2 years.

Church Dedication in the Dominican Republic

On Oct. 9, 2011, the congregation "Amigos de Jesus," or "Friends of Jesus," dedicated their new sanctuary in Las Americas, Dominican Republic. Representatives from The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Argentina were present for the special celebration. Fifteen children and youth were baptized at the service and three adults were also confirmed.

American Fun Fair 2011 (Hong Kong)

The third annual American Fun Fair was held on Friday, October 28, 2011 at Ma Chan Duen Hey (MCDH) Memorial College in Po Lam, Hong Kong. This year a team from Redeemer Lutheran Church in Manitowok, Wisconsin helped with the American Fun Fair along with students and teachers from MCDH and LCMS missionaries. More than 400 students from seven different schools participated in the American Fun Fair this year.

Nearly 275 educators from throughout Asia and the United States gathered in Hong Kong October 21-22, 2011 for the Asia Lutheran Education Association Conference. The theme for the conference was Christ, Conscience, Curriculum: Schools In Mission. On October 21, the conference was hosted by The Lutheran Church—Hong Kong Synod at Concordia Lutheran School, Kowloon. Participants were able to choose from a number of different breakout sessions during the afternoon.

Kieschnick Lecture Series, Hong Kong

On October 14, 2011, The Lutheran Church—Hong Kong Synod (LCHKS) celebrated the opening of the Kieschnick Gardent at Concordia Lutheran School, Kowloon. Dr. Mel Kieschnick served as principal of Concordia Lutheran School, Kowloon during the 1950's and the LCHKS honored the Kieschnick family by naming the garden of the new school after them. Dr. and Mrs. Kieschnick traveled to Hong Kong as part of the Kieschnick Lecture Series sponsored by Wheatridge Ministries.

Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria in Russia celebrates 400th anniversary

On July 30, 2011, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria in Russia (ELCIR) continued its year-long celebration of its 400th anniversary with a day-long remembrance and celebration. The day started with a worship service at the ruins of the Lutheran church in the village of Moloskovitzi in the St. Petersburg area of western Russia. The remaining skeleton of a church building, which dates back to 1632, is the oldest surviving Lutheran structure in Russia. The building was taken from the church during Stalin’s rule, was partially destroyed during World War II, and then partially rebuilt and converted into a collective farm. After a succession of failed reconstructions, the farm was abandoned and left to ruin. New Missionary Orientation: Launch 2011 - Sending Service

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod commissioned 32 new career and long-term missionaries and educators into global service with a special “sending service” at the LCMS International Center chapel in St. Louis, Mo., on Friday, July 15. The sending service served as the conclusion of New Missionary Orientation: Launch 2011, which began on the evening of July 5. The new missionaries will begin their service sometime this year in 16 countries.

A group of our new LCMS International missionaries, human care workers and teachers took a break from New Missionary Orientation: Launch 2011 to visit Concordia Publishing House, St. Louis. Our group was most kindly welcomed with a greeting from leadership, given a tour of CPH and allowed time in the flagship bookstore. The group also received multilingual resources and gifts from CPH and were able to put their missionary discounts to use! Thanks CPH for welcoming, hosting and supporting our LCMS missionaries!

Lutheran Center for Theological Studies in Togo

Rev. Glenn Fluegge, LCMS missionary in Africa, recently visited the Lutheran Center for Theological Studies (CLET) in Dapaong, Togo, where he encouraged students studying for the pastoral ministry. He was also able to attend their 2011 graduation ceremony and celebration. Students from many French-speaking countries throughout Africa come to Togo to study at the Center. The Fluegge family previously served full-time in Togo at the CLET.

Japan Lutheran Church leaders hosted regional The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod leaders on March 30, 2011 to discuss the relief response of the JLC and how the LCMS can walk with our Japanese brothers and sisters in that response. A $100,000 grant from the LCMS has already been sent to the JLC.

Dominican Republic Ordination

By God’s grace, the Dominican Republic Lutheran Mission is celebrating five years of ministry in the Dominican Republic as a Lutheran mission team supported by the LCMS, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil and other faithful partners. This year began with the ordination of Vicar Willy Gaspar on March 12 in Las Americas. Vicar Willy is the first Dominican pastor to serve in our growing church. In the same divine service, the Mission signed a protocol document with the Argentinean seminary, committing partners to establishing an independent seminary by 2017 for the training of pastors, deacons and deaconesses.

Japan Earthquake and Tsunami 2011

On Friday, March 11, 2011, Japan experienced a catastrophic 8.9 (some say 9.0) magnitude earthquake, which spawned a deadly tsunami. According to news reports, the death toll is expected to rise to 10,000 people and thousands more are missing or injured. It also has caused tens of billions of dollars in property and economic losses. Current and former LCMS missionaries in Tokyo area, Niigata area, and Fukushima area, Japan are all confirmed safe. VYM Closing Service

The Volunteer Youth Ministry program was established in 1965 at the Prince of Peace Volunteers. The program was a partnership between The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod and The Lutheran Church in Japan. Over the 46 year tenure of the program, hundreds of LCMS missionaries were sent as English and Bible teachers to work within the congregations of The Japan Lutheran Church.

Concordia Welfare and Education Foundation Thailand

A group from Church of All Nations in Hong Kong, a LCMS congregation, served with Concordia Welfare and Education Foundation Thailand in northwestern Thailand. The group was able to serve at the United Nations Karen Refuge Camp (a Burmese minority group), two public school and two Hmong Lutheran churches. During their visit the group taught the students songs, Bible stories, hygene lessons and played games and sports.

Lutheran Church in Korea

The Lutheran Church in Korea (LCK) is a partner church started by the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). On October 10, 2010, the LCK hosted the grand opening of the Luther Building. It is a 29-story office building, which the LCK will rent to businesses and the revenue will support outreach and mission opportunities in South Korea and beyond. The LCK invited a number of partner churches, including the LCMS and the Lutheran Church in Japan to join in the celebration of this new avenue of ministry. As with many of the LCMS partner church, the LCK is working to expand educational opportunities. Currently, the LCK has one school; Luther Theological University is a university/seminary near Seoul. The LCK is also looking to continue its partnership with the LCMS. The Wasmund family recently moved to Seoul to develop programs with the LCK integrating English and outreach programs with short and long-term LCMS volunteers.

10 Years in Spain Celebration

This year the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Spain celebrated 10 years of mission and ministry! The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Spain also celebrated an important event in their short history this month with the installation of the first Spanish Lutheran Pastor in nearly 400 years. On October 10, 2010, Pastor Juan Carlos Garcia Cazorla was installed in Madrid. The event focused around celebrating 10 years of mission and ministry in Spain, done in partnership with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Argentina and the LCMS. Guests included the presidents of the Portuguese Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church—Synod of France, representatives from the LCMS, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Argentina.

Philippines SportsFest 2010

The Lutheran Church in the Philippines held the 13th annual SportFest. This year six teams participated with a total of over 260 partipants. The event was hosted by Christ Lutheran Church in Pangasinan. Competitions included sports, board games, singing and playing musical instruments. Daily devotions, Bible studies and worship services focused on the theme "Ambassadors of Reconciliation."

South Korea - Short-term Volunteers

In August 2009, volunteers from the LCMS traveled to South Korea to serve in several outreach ministries of the Lutheran Church in Korea, an LCMS partner church. Two of these short-term missionaries served at a three-week 'ESL (English-as-a-second-language) Day Camp' on the campus of Luther University in South Korea. A team of 11 from Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona, IA also served at the 'ESL Day Camp', as well as a free 'ESL Bible Camp' for the community children (similar to VBS) and the 'LCK Summer Youth Camp', a national youth gathering event.

Choir Festival - El Paso, Texas

The Choir Music Festival was held on Sunday, April 19 at 4:00 p.m. at San Pablo Lutheran Church, with refreshments next door at the Lutheran Hispanic Missionary Institute. It was organized by the Lutheran Hispanic Missionary Institute. The Festival was a way to bring the churches together, to get people to learn more about the Missionary Institute, to get them to meet the students–to make our work more real to them. The churches that participated were Mission Lutheran, Las Cruces, N.M.; San Pablo Lutheran, El Paso, Texas; Zion Lutheran, El Paso, Texas; and Ascension Lutheran, El Paso. It went over so well that people are already asking when we are going to do it again. Praise God! The guest organist was Bruce Nehring.

New Sunday School in Las Americas, Dominican Republic

Outside of the capitol of Santo Domingo, local Dominican Lutherans took advantage of a birthday party to launch a new Sunday School in a rapidly developing community named Las Americas. The "Christian Birthday Party" included a Bible skit, Christian music, a veggietales movie, and a big invitation to keep coming back week after week for Sunday School!

Los Nubes Mission, Panama

Up in the mountains near the Dios Es Grande Lutheran congregation in Loma Cova, the youth of the congregation hold a mission Sunday School. The children of this village have very little of the basic human needs like clean water and dependable shelter, the mission is a chance for Loma Cova youth to share their faith in action.

Taiwan Missionaries in Cambodia

A team of teachers from Concordia Middle School in Chiayi, Taiwan traveled to Battambang, Cambodia over the Chinese New Year holiday to teach English and help to support the work of Trinity Lutheran Church and School in Battambang. The team was made up of five LCMS missionaries and two of their Taiwanese colleagues.

LCMS World Mission Servant Event

On March 3, 2009, LCMS World Mission staff had a servant event at Orphan Grain Train and Holy Cross Lutheran Church. It was a great day of fellowship and hard work! A bit of history: Holy Cross and Orphan Grain Train (OGT) are located in an area that was the cradle of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod in the mid-to-late 19th century. Holy Cross Church and School were actually started by members of Trinity, one of C.W.F. Walther’s original congregations in Soulard, who didn’t want to travel so far to take their children to school and to worship. The building that now houses OGT, along with other structures that are now torn down, was the location of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, for decades in the late 19th and early 20th century, until the seminary moved to its current campus in Clayton. Also, the first KFUO 850 AM broadcast was transmitted from the OGT building on Texas Ave., in 1924, before the station was moved to its current location on the seminary campus in Clayton.

Asia Career Missionaries Workgroup Meeting

LCMS World Mission’s career missionaries from across Asia met in Hong Kong February 12-14 for a ‘workgroup’ meeting. The event was a rare opportunity for the missionaries to recharge and enjoy fellowship with their mission teammates. More than a retreat, though, the three-day meeting was a time to come together as a unified group to create a clear vision for the future as they strive to cultivate the “green growing edge” of the church in Asia.

Hong Kong - Street Sleepers Party

Over the years, long-time missionary Carol Halter has befriended, visited, and showed love to many of Hong Kong's homeless people (or 'street sleepers') and every year, she throws a party for them! This year, the venue was Concordia Lutheran School, one of the LCHKS (Lutheran Church - Hong Kong Synod) schools. A large group of volunteers from several churches around Hong Kong showed up to help out, which was great because over 50 street sleepers showed up for the party! Each of these special guests was given a big bag full of candies and snacks, an even bigger bag full of clothes (which they picked out themselves), a new sweat suit, and a delicious meal. In addition to caring for some physical needs, the event also provided some spiritual nourishment, in the form of Christmas songs and a Cantonese worship service.

Concordia International School Shanghai - 10th Anniversary

Concordia Shanghai was founded in 1998 with only 22 students, 14 teachers and 10 administrative staff in what was then a new section in Shanghai – the residential Jinqiao neighborhood of Pudong. Today, the school has more than 1,000 students representing nearly 30 different passports taught by more than 130 teachers in four purpose-built facilities.
