Winter Survival Exercise 2011

Overnight winter survival exercise. Participants were split into four person groups, and had to set up shelters, fires, and signals. Participants remained outside for approx 24 hours in -17C weather.

Currency Exercise

The Currency Exercise is flown to allow members to meet CASARA currency requirements. In this ex, two airplanes flew, with two pilots, three navigators, and three spotters becoming current as a result. We also gave some members an introduction to headquarters procedures.

Western Canada SAREx 2010

Major search exercise at St Andrews, which included teams from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Aircraft arrived on Thu 19 August and Fri 20 August, flew on the exercise on Sat 21 Aug and Sun 22 Aug, and departed on 22 Aug. Other activities during the event included a meet and greet on Fri evening, and a dinner on Sat evening.

ELT Search Gladstone

CASARA Brandon could not respond to a report of an ELT near the western shore of Lake Manitoba, so CASARA Winnipeg sent one airplane to the vicinity. The crew successfully homed to the Gladstone airport, where they found a windstorm had gone through in the early morning. It tore a hangar apart and damaged several airplanes. The signal was found to be coming from a flipped Piper Super Cub.

Western Canada SAREx Yellowknife

CASARA Manitoba sent one airplane to Yellowknife to participate in the annual Western Canada SAREx in August 2009. CASARA Manitoba also sent three members along on the 435 Sqn Hercules to Yellowknife. All members flew in mixed crews in various aircraft, with crews made up of CASARA members from across western Canada.

Kangirsuk QC Search

Four CASARA Winnipeg members participated in a search for a missing Canadian Helicopters Bell 206 chopper, which went missing near Kangirsuk, on the eastern coast of Quebec. Two members went up on Saturday 18 July, and returned the next day. Two other members went up on Monday 20 July, not returning until Friday 24 July. They were based out of Iqaluit during the search. The helicopter was eventually located, with no survivors.

Western Canada SAREx 2008

Western Canada SAREx is an annual joint exercise held to improve the interoperability of CASARA members from across western Canada. This year's exercise was held in Red Deer, Alberta, from 8 - 10 August. Zones from BC, AB, SK, MB, and YT sent members to participate. CASARA Manitoba sent one crew, John Hall (Winnipeg), Norm Griffiths (Brandon), Grace Schedler (Winnipeg, and val Uffelman (The Pas). CASARA Winnipeg sent one crew, Jim Bell, John Carley, Kim Paulenko, and Lacey Smith. Each crew had two or three search flights. On the Winnipeg team's second flight, Lacey Smith was replaced by Jen Peterson of Whitehorse.

CASARA Winnipeg & Thunder Bay Joint Exercise in Dryden ON 8 & 9 March 2008

Photos taken during the joint CASARA Winnipeg and CASARA Thunder Bay exercise in Dryden, Ontario. The exercise provided practice in setting up a remote headquarters and flying over unfamiliar terrain. Aircraft flew in the vicinity of Dryden, Kenora, Red Lake, and Sioux Lookout.

Actual Search to Rankin Inlet, NU to Search for 2 Lost Hunters, Dec. 2, 2007

CASARA CREW: Christopher Black, Roland Biber, Grace Schedler, Darlene Searcy on C-130 Hercules, 10 hr non-stop flight from Winnipeg - Rankin Inlet, NU - Winnipeg.
