Antarctica
Nov. 10 - 22, 2010-- on assignment to write/produce a mini-documentary about adventure travel, in this case tourist expeditions to Antarctica. The 10-day voyage aboard the Ocean Nova, a small cruise ship (72 passengers, 35 crew) operated by Quark Expeditions, is the ultimate adventure to the coldest, windiest, driest, highest continent on Earth. The expedition began in picturesque Ushuaia, southernmost city in the world. The dreaded Drake Passage is rough before crossing the Antarctic Convergence to the South Shetland Islands off the Antarctic peninsula. Here’s the only place to experience dramatic nature untouched by humans: magnificent granite mountains covered by snow and glaciers, massive icebergs, species of penguins, whales, seals up close.
Zodiac boats brought us on shore where we hiked in snow, kayaked, camped overnight, had penguin encounters, visited two research centers. Clothing technology makes it possible to keep warm. Blogs coming,
