Okinawa, 1957-58, Weapons Company, 2nd battalion, 9th Marines
We were the last U.S. ground combat troops to leave Japan after the occupation. We boarded trains in Gotemba in Oct. 1958 bound for Yokosuka. We sailed for Okinawa but were delayed by a huge typhoon that blew away our tent camp. We were re-deployed to Camp Bishigawa, near Kadana Circle for a few months and then replaced the 3rd Marines at modern Camp Sukiran (an army base) and they moved into Bishigawa.
