NCLD - Children's Advocacy Award Dinner

The National Center for Learning Disabilities presented Raleigh native and former "American Idol" contestant Clay Aiken the Children's Advocacy Award at a benefit dinner Wednesday in New York. The center is a national group and education clearinghouse that promotes research and programs to foster effective learning. Aiken was honored for his work with children with special needs.

UNICEF - Afghanistan

Clay recently returned from a five day field mission to Afghanistan with UNICEF as part of his Goodwill Ambassador duties. The purpose of the mission was to observe and report on UNICEF's programs in education and healthcare for women and children. Clay wrote about his experiences in UNICEF's field notes blog and a short video on his work can be seen on the international UNICEF site. He visited schools and health clinics and administered an oral polio vaccine to an Afghani baby. At the end of his visit, he met with the international press about his observations, where spoke about the progress Afghanistan has made and the work still to be done. Upon his return, UNICEF published Clay's Appeal for Afghanistan and issued a challenge to raise $100,000 in 10 days. The goal was reached in just 7 days.Go to www.unicef.org for more information. There was over 180,000 dollars raised in ten days. He went to Kabul and Bamyan.

Clay Aiken helped young people with intellectual disabilities and their Best Buddies plant more than 40 six-foot tall palm trees in Hollywood, Fla.Aiken was participating in National Youth Service Day -- an annual weekend event April 15 to 17 that features children and teens volunteering in their communities.The most successful alumnus from Fox's "American Idol" also announced the first recipients of the Clay Aiken ABLE to SERVE grants, providing grants of up to $2,000 each to youth with disabilities for community service projects for National Youth Service Day. "Conventional wisdom often looks upon youth with disabilities as a population to be served by volunteers, instead of as a group that can serve as volunteers," Aiken said. "The Bubel/Aiken Foundation and Youth Service America seek to change this misperception by engaging youth with disabilities to serve create and lead others in service projects on National Youth Service Day and every day of the year."

TBAF - Fearless Caregiver Conference - April 16, 2005

The Fearless Caregiver Conference at the Broward Convention Center will be held Saturday, April 16th. The event allows family caregivers and the professional caregiving community to come together and explore ways to be a more productive member of their loved one's care team. According to Olga Bruner, founder of A Good Daughter, Inc., based in Margate, Florida (www.agooddaughter.com), "I attended my first caregiver conference in 2001 while I was caregiver to my own mom. I never realized that there was such a large community of support, and resources available from local experts. It's a must-do especially for those individuals caring at home for a loved-one with Alzheimer's disease."As Today's Caregiver Magazine celebrates its 10th anniversary, families will hear from this year's featured guest speaker, popular musical artist and American Idol superstar, Clay Aiken, who has been involved in care giving issues himself and founded the Bubel/Aiken Foundation.

TBAF - World Children's Day at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) 11/20/04

On Saturday, November 20th, the day following the Ronald McDonald World's Children Day benefit, Aiken's own organization, the Bubel/Aiken Foundation (TBAF), an organization committed to funding inclusive programs that connect children with special needs to their typical peers, will be celebrating World Children's Day with an art event at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Aiken, a former special education teacher and mentor, joined children with and without disabilities from the YMCA of Los Cerritos and Ability First of Claremont and participated in inclusive art activities such as tracing each other's hands.

Charity Events - McDonald's World Children's Day 2004

Aiken is urging Americans to purchase $1 paper cut-out hands at participating McDonald's locations on Nov. 20, World Children's Day. "As a former special education teacher, I'm uniquely aware of children's needs," states Aiken. "I'm grateful to McDonald's for allowing me to work with them to champion causes that make positive differences in kids' lives."As part of the program, Aiken also donated an autographed cement imprint of his hand to be auctioned off on EBay. Currently, the bid on Aiken's imprint is more than $10,000. The winning bidder of the Clay Aiken handprint will be awarded the signed cement handprint from Aiken personally at one of his holiday concert tour stops this year. Aiken's Holiday Concert Tour, sponsored by McDonald's, kicks off Nov. 21 and goes through Dec. 23, 2004. Aiken will also be seen on Jan. 1st riding on the first float McDonald's has ever entered in the Rose Bowl Parade.

Since 1989, Disney has saluted more than 500 exemplary teachers in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade for innovative teaching methods that actively engage students in learning. The focus of the DisneyHand Teacher Awards is to recognize the teaching profession, showcase creativity in the classroom, and honor those who can assist in developing creative teaching strategies in their school districts. TBAF - Concord Camp Gonzo 7/16/04

Before he was Clay Aiken the ‘American Idol’ runner-up, Aiken spent summers not on stage but in gyms playing with kids as a camp counselor. They called him Gonzo then and now he's created a camp called Camp Gonzo. "It's kids with disabilities, kids without disabilities, all in the same program all doing the exact same thing. They’re all having the exact same camp experience so it's exactly what we wanted to do,” Aiken said. In 2004, through his Bubel-Aiken Foundation, enough money was raised to pay for 10 weeks of camp combined in Concord, Raleigh and Kansas City. The following summer, in June of 2005, The Bubel/Aiken Foundation teamed with Cannon Memorial YMCA to open "Camp Gonzo" in North Concord, N.C.

TBAF - Rosalynn Carter Caregiver's Gala - June 15, 2004

The Rosalynn Carter Institute (RCI) will hold its first Gala Celebration of Caregivers on Tuesday, June 15, at 7 p.m. in Atlanta’s Symphony Hall. The gala will be headlined by “American Idol” star Clay Aiken, and Miss Atlanta Danica Tisdale also will perform. “It will be a tribute to America’s unsung heroes and an entertaining evening of comedy, music, song and celebrities with special wishes and dreams for the young, elderly and disabled,” said Rhonda Talley, RCI executive director. “The gala will highlight the beautiful hearts and souls of those who provide care and let the compassion of caregivers shine. Clay performed the national anthem at the June 6 MBNA 400: A Salute to Heroes race in Dover and a benefit concert at the Rollins Center the night before. The June 5 concert benefited The Bubel/Aiken Foundation and the Autism Society of Delaware. The foundation provides assistance to promote the inclusion of children with disabilities in society.

TBAF- Hallmark Kaleidoscope Art Project - April 15, 2004

On April 15, Clay and Diane joined Kansas City kids for a private art session at Hallmark’s Kaleidoscope. In accordance with the Foundation’s mission to integrate children with disabilities into the life environment of those without, children with special needs will pair up with their typical peers to create an art project based on the theme, “How Art Defines Me.”

BAF Krispy Kreme Signing

After a sold out concert the previous night, Clay did an autograph session at a local Krispy Kreme donut shop in Winston-Salem. Sales during his visit went to the Bubel Aiken Foundation. The first 150 people in line got to go in and meet Clay and get one autograph and have their group picture taken.

Other Charities - Charlotte 49ers Basketball Game - January 10, 2004

The Charlotte 49ers honored one of the nation's hottest recording artists, Clay Aiken, with a bobblehead doll at the January 10th men's basketball game against East Carolina. Since the American Idol competition, Aiken has released a double-platinum debut album, "Measure of a Man", that peaked as the #1 best-selling album in the country. He has become, unquestionably, one of the entertainment industry's hottest commodities. The sellout crowd was treated to an electric halftime performance by Aiken who performed the national anthem before the game, with hundreds of flashbulbs popping throughout the arena. At halftime, in a 49ers jersey, Aiken again wowed the crowd with two songs, including his hit single "Invisible".

Clay sang the National Anthem, then performed the following songs during breaks in the game: "I Will Carry You" (sang while skating!), "Don't Save It All For Christmas Day", "The Way", and "Invisible".

TBAF - LWLHD Check Presentation - August 6, 2003

A group of eight ladies decided to try to raise money for Clay’s charities. At the time Clay had not started BAF, but he had been talking about the possibility. These ladies organized into a group and called themselves the Look What Love Has Done organization, after one of Clay’s demo songs. Their goal was to raise $5,000 over the internet for a donation. They held an auction on e-bay that included 12 Clay-signed Rolling Stone magazines. The donations didn't stop at $5,000. Clay’s generous fans kept on giving and giving. The LWLHD organization raised $42,200.00 for a donation to The Bubel-Aiken Foundation.On August 06, 2003, when the American Idol Tour rolled through Raleigh, Charles Meeker, the Mayor of Raleigh, held a press conference for Clay and the check presentation was part of that.

Clay Aiken, who was completing his studies to become a special education teacher before the AMERICAN IDOL competition and his astonishing rise to super-stardom, supports AFI's efforts to expand the K-12 AFI Screen Education Center program nationwide."Since I've had to put my own work with special needs kids on hold for now, I am excited to do what I can to support worthwhile educational efforts, particularly those which reach kids who might otherwise fall through the cracks. The AFI Screen Education Center programs certainly work with highly motivated students, but also engage those who for one reason or another-language barriers, learning disabilities, different ways ofprocessing information-haven't enjoyed success with their studies before.I'm here to thank members of Congress and the Department of Education for supporting this great program," said Aiken.

TBAF - Wachovia Bank Opening in Rockefeller Center - July 28, 2003

Clay Aiken, the American Idol II runner-up joined New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Wachovia executives for a press conference and ribbon-cutting ceremony in Rockefeller Plaza. After a grand entrance and a few kind words about Wachovia, Aiken, a North Carolina native and long-time Wachovia customer, surprised all in attendance by announcing he would like to open the first official account in the name of his new Bubel-Aiken Foundation, which he said he was starting to benefit mentally challenged children."The Bubel-Aiken foundation is something I was going to have Wachovia help me set up and manage anyway, so I just thought 'why not do it today,'" said Aiken. "Diane Bubel is a close friend of mine from home and she changed my life because she's the one who encouraged me to audition for American Idol. That's why I'm starting this foundation in her name. Hopefully we can make some positive changes in the lives of children with mental disabilities."
