Sant Jordi's Day in Christchurch New Zealand 2010
Celebration of Sant Jordi's Day (St George’s Day) – Catalan Day of Love, Books & Roses starts in Christchurch, New Zealand on 23 April 2010. The local residents and visitors from Spain, UK, France, Ukraine, Chile, China, Taiwan, HongKong and India enjoy the celebration of ''a Rose for Love and a Book Forever'' at Christchurch central library. The celebration is the first of its kind in New Zealand’s history. It’s also believed to be the furthest one on earth. It brings Catalan, Spaniard and Kiwi together to read, to talk, to present books and roses, to share love.
This tradition inspired UNESCO to declare this the International Day of the Book, since April 23, 1616 was also the date of death of the English playwright William Shakespeare and the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes.
A wide range of books, posters and DVDs about Sant Jordi's Day provided by the Catalan government (Dept. of Culture and Communication) are displayed at library till 30 April. www.newzealand2ways.com
