Ecobank supports tree farming in Malawi

In December 2011, Ecobank Malawi Limited pledged its continued support to projects aimed at combating the effects of climate change. The pledge was made at Ntchisi, a district in central Malawi, as the bank made the last payment of a 3 year carbon sequestration tree planting project worth $7,500. The project is implemented by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in cooperation with the Sustainability Science Programme at Harvard University.

August 2011 workshops

In August 2011, PRESA held two successive workshops in Nairobi, Kenya, with over 30 representatives of government, community organizations, industry, NGOs and research organizations. The workshops were held from 8 – 12 August with participants from Ethiopia, Guinea, Indonesia, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and the United Kingdom. The first of the workshops was meant to increase understanding of the opportunities associated with payments for environmental services. The second workshop was more technical. Participants learnt about the tools required to undertake social impact assessment (SIA) of REDD+ or other terrestrial carbon projects with appropriate support. The workshops were hosted by PRESA, with material and financial support from the ASB Partnership, Forest Trends, the Katoomba Group, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Kisumu stakeholders meeting, July 2011

On Thursday, 21 July 2011, PRESA and World Neighbours held a meeting in the Kenyan city of Kisumu, bringing together stakeholders concerned with environmental degradation at the Nyando River basin. The stakeholders included representatives of communities from both the upper and lower parts of the basin, as well as those from government departments and academic institutions.

Farewell party for Miika Mäkelä

Miika Mäkelä, an expert on maps who has been working with PRESA in Nairobi, Kenya since 2008 is relocating back to his home country. PRESA staff alongside others from the World Agroforestry Centre organized a farewill dinner for Miika on 30 March 2011, at the Abyssinia Restaurant in Nairobi.

Sasumua stakeholders meeting on payments for environmental services

PRESA invited officials from the Sasumua Water Resource Users Association, the Nairobi Water Company, the Water Resources Management Authority and the Water Services Trust Fund for a roundtable discussion on how to go about rewarding upland farmers for watershed services in Sasumua.

Launch of the Sasumua Farmers' catchment and conservation Self Help Group

On 1st February 2011, PRESA was invited by farmers in the Sasumua catchment area to witness the launch of a self help group. The purpose of the self help group is to engage in environmental conservation activities. The farmers who launched this group have been actively involved in PRESA research activities and, with time, have gained an appreciation of the ecosystem’s importance.

Willingness to pay survey in Nairobi

PRESA conducted a survey among water users in western Nairobi from 19 October to 26 October 2010. The purpose of the survey was to find out whether water consumers would be willing to pay for the watershed services provided by farmers in the catchment area of Sasumua Dam.

Students visit Sasumua site, June 2010

Clementine Remy and Lucie Andeltova, two student researchers from Europe, went on a tour of the Sasumua site in June 2010. They were accompanied by Thomas Yatich and Godfrey Mwaloma from the World Agroforestry Centre as well as Mr Sammy Mbage Wanyeki, a local farmer.
