1/1 My husband's family always made bagels on New Year's Eve. We decided to adopt the tradition. It always takes longer than we think and we're always up until 2:00 in the morning or so.
1/2 All the floors in Budapest are this wood design. Usually in homes a large area rug covers the majority of the floor, but in other buildings, church for example, the whole floor is one large expanse of wooden zig-zag.
1/3 I decided to make muffins for Breakfast. Unfortunately I don't have a muffin pan, so we had muffin cake. It's pretty good if you're wondering...
1/4 Funny girl takes her naps on our bed because we don't heat her room during the day. Today she fell asleep on the way home from Ikea, so I put her down still in her jacket. This is how I found her a half an hour later.
1/5 Little one loves to help with the laundry. She helps me carry the clothes. That orange thing in the background is our super retro washer. Cute huh?
1/6 I really wanted this to be a good picture. If you look closely you can see the butterflies on the bottom of little one's shoes.
1/7 We went to Indigo to eat Indian food tonight. I took a picture of the restaraunt, but it was downright boring compared to this "tea house" kitty corner.
1/9 Discount holiday candy!!!
1/10 We like food. I liked this picture because you could see the steam coming off the lentils. Unfortunately it didn't show up as well on the computer screen as it did on the camera screen.
1/11 The morning battle: how to get a toddler to get more cream of wheat in her mouth than on the table. Her daddy really likes the kissy face in this picture :)
1/12 This is picture number one of a series I'm going to call "Things I found under my kitchen sink." Our landlord lived in our apartment before we did and left a whole bunch of stuff in it. Computer monitors, extra desks... even a cat. I've got most of it cleaned out except for the cabinet under the kitchen sink. I decided that just for kicks I would document my endeavors to clean this last bastion of bachelor clutter.
1/13 We went to the museum and stopped at the central park by Szechenyi Fürdö on the way back. There's a little pond there with ducks and benches and a restaurant (the yellow building). Check out all the birds on the roof!
1/14 Picture #2 of "Things I found under my kitchen sink." Apparently the man liked his alcohol.
1/15 My husband bought me this really pretty rose at the metro stop on his way home from somewhere or other, so I decided to take pictures of it today. I took some pretty pictures, but when I looked at them all, this one made both my husband and me laugh so hard it had to be the one I posted. Sometimes it amazes me how her little fingers can manage to be everywhere at once.
1/16 Picture #3 of "Things I found under my kitchen sink." Interestingly, I had already found yet another dustpan in the bathroom...
1/17 Church in Hungarian anyone? We actually attend an English speaking branch.
1/18 Picture #4 of "Things I found under my kitchen sink." Dangerous nails and boards... great things to have within reach of toddlers.
1/19 I. bought apples and two of them were HUGE! I tried and tried to think of something that would show how big this apple was. In the end I'm not sure I was completely successful.
1/20 This is a statue of an anonymous historian. Apparently no one knows his name, but his work was influential enough for the Hungarians to memorialize him in a statue anyway.
1/21 Picture #5 of "Things I found under my kitchen sink." Random cleaning supplies. Homemade and otherwise.
1/22 We have defeated the monster apple!
1/24 This is a church just around the corner from our church. It's kind of funny because it's this old stone building and our church just down the road is just another door in a long street of mushed together European style building.
1/25 Picture #6 of "Things I found under my kitchen sink." Random objects: Trash bags, styrofoam tray, screws, knife blade, knife handle, toothbrush, sawdust, ashtray, random plastic plate thing, and a garfield cup. Each of these is obviously implied by the term "furnished" right?
1/26 We were playing the "chase me around the chair and table in the middle of the room" game yesterday and little monkey girl fell down right into the corner of the couch. It gave her this nasty welt that turned into a nasty looking scab today. Who knew upholstery could be so mean?
1/27 We went to the Transportation Museum near City Park. They had trains, boats, bicycles, motorcycles, cars, more trains, airplanes, bridges, and all sorts of stuff. This is a section of the chain bridge that crosses the Danube between Buda and Pest.
1/28 Picture #7 of "Things I found under my kitchen sink." Pet care products and a platypus. Not so much related, I know, but I'm getting to the end and I didn't want to take a picture of everything individually. This guy REALLY likes his cat though. He decided at one point that the cat needed to come back to our apartment for a little while because "it needed a familiar place." Cat psychology - I guess I'm out of the loop.
1/29 Hungarians have this cheese that's kind of like cottage cheese, but not really. It's called turos and it's really good in pastries. It's most famous as the sweet, chocolate covered base of the turorudi - a favorite refrigerated treat here. I found a bag of it at the store yesterday and I bought it. Today I mixed a little of it with sugar and put it on muffins before I baked them. Because I do muffin cakes (see picture of 1/3) this is what it looked like.
1/30 It snowed A LOT today. Like ALL day. I think we got near a foot of snow. So we took pictures.
1/31 Falling asleep on the metro. We had so much snow we skipped the stroller this time and boy did she think that was cool. She got to sit on the seat all by herself and wave with the motion of the metro. By the time church was out and she'd missed her nap, though, the rocking motion had a little different effect. The stickers are from Sunday school :)
2/1 Hand-me-downs!!! I spent all day sorting them. We are impressed that some of them come from France. Living in Europe is a little surreal sometimes.
2/3 I bought these flowers for a friend who is having a Birthday party tomorrow. I'm realizing that it's really hard to get a picture of a flower to show how pretty the flower really is. Somehow they're always prettier in real life. At least when I photograph them.
2/4 I guess this could almost go in my "Things I found under my kitchen sink" collection, but it's the pantry. The pantry was locked when we got to our apartment and I never could get it open. When our landlord came to take some furniture away he opened it for me and found it completely full of junk. Unfortunately, his truck was already full and he couldn't take the stuff from the pantry with him. Of course it took him about a month to come back and get the stuff out of the pantry, but he did it today. It was amazing all the stuff that came out of that pantry. And there's still some wallpaper, a fishing rod and some paint left in there.
2/5 Someone found Mommy's tennis shoes... She likes to clunk around the house in them. Her entire foot, with her slipper on fits inside the shoe. The other day I found her with both my shoes on trying to climb up a chair. The shoes were a considerable hinderance.
2/6 I read that you should take a picture of yourself every month or so to see how you've changed. Since I am pregnant this is probably doubly good advice, but this is the first time I've managed it. Taking pictures of yourself is a pain! Especially if you don't have a tripod.
2/7 We went to the Sister Missionaries' for dinner. Sister Wade has been adopted as official Budapest Grandma. We like her a whole lot and little munchkin follows her around every time we go over there. It's pretty cute. This picture was originally really yellow, so I started playing with the limited effects that iPhoto offers. This is the original picture with the edges blurred and the color faded to "6," whatever that means. I like her pink little cheeks and how the color fade makes the flowers on her dress stand out.
2/8 I did some crocheting today. I didn't do all of these today, but this is my stash of dishcloths. It's one of about four things I know how to make, but I rather enjoy doing them. Craftiness - ta da!
2/9 Our electricity went out today. I turned on a light and the light bulb blew out and all the lights in our apartment went out. I couldn't find the fuse box, so the munchkin and I were in the dark for 45 minutes or so while we waited for Daddy to get home. He got it fixed pretty quickly, but in the meantime we mixed up muffin mix for the next couple months and pancake mix for tonight by flashlight.
2/10 Laundry day. Hungarians don't believe in clothes dryers apparently so a clothes rack in front of the heater is as good as it gets. Unfortunately it's something of an eye sore and has to remain so for about 2 days.
2/11 This is what happens when you call to make sure a play date is still on AFTER you run to the store at 8:30 in the morning to buy the snacks you were going to take. It was canceled. It's a good thing we like yogurt (or guka as the little one calls it).
2/12 The yellow metro line has tiled name plates at most of the stops. They're kind of pretty. An interesting note: the yellow metro here in Budapest was the first underground metro in continental Europe. Kind of cool huh?
2/14 Margit's Hid across the Danube in Budapest. It was kind of warm (relatively speaking) so we took a detour on our way to church and walked across the bridge. It was an overcast day, so most of the pictures didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped, but it was a really nice walk anyway. Perfect for Valentine's Day.
2/15 I flew back to Texas today. The signs at the airport are the European train station style signs that you can watch flap through when they change the words on them. It's kind of cool.
2/16 I'm back in Texas for a while and I was going to take a picture of our house here, but as I was coming in I found this cute squirrel on a tree and started taking pictures of him instead. My dad has a new camera with a much better optical zoom than mine. It was really fun to play with and I got a much better picture of the squirrel than I would have with my camera.
2/17 Can you tell I'm in a warmer place? Both pictures since I got here have been outside... I was on a walk and saw this bush with really pretty berries. I think I might have gone a little overboard with the contrast editing though.
2/18 A cowboy hat! I love how little munchkin girl looks so in motion. She's at a stage where I almost can't take a picture of her because she won't hold still long enough for the camera to focus.
2/19 My sister said I should take a picture of this seed pod. I found some nice green bushes for contrast and it's kind of cool I think.
2/20 I've spent the last few days reading. Ironically the book I finished today (The Lightening Thief) isn't in this pile because I took it back to the library today.
2/21 My mom's piano. We hear from it everyday. Sometimes it's pretty songs from my sister practicing and others it's the pounding cacauphony of little munchkin releasing creative energy.
2/22 My dad has been repairing this guitar. The whole house has smelled like laquer for two days, but the guitar looks really good. He had to completely replace the bridge, as it had come completely off. This is the replacement he made. I think it's really pretty. He also put a steel rod in the neck so it wouldn't bend. He put a new faceplate on the headstock and sanded down the neck so he could reposition the frets so the intonation would be better. He put mother of pearl markers in the neck and took the face off the body so he could add support. He also replaced the tuning machines. He kind of rebuilt the whole thing. Mom and Dad got the guitar 26 years ago on their honeymoon in Mexico.
2/23 My dad and brothers are into guitars, can you tell? From left to right they are: my dad's electric guitar that he built from a kit (notice the customized design on the top), My youngest brother's guitar, my dad's classical guitar, my dad's acoustic steel string guitar, and my middle brother's electric base. Missing is my oldest brother's electric guitar. The middle guitar is the one my dad rebuilt.
2/25 I've started a hummus extravaganza. I found about five different hummus recipes I wanted to try and Tuesday I went to the store and bought all the stuff to make them. I finally got to making them on Wednesday and this is Thursday's recipe: parsley hummus. It was really tasty.
2/26 Some days I really struggle to find something picture worthy. Today was one of those days. I always liked how apples made stars when you cut them right though.
2/27 Only in Texas would you find even the address labels on curbs turned into state flags.
2/28 Pita bread to go with our hummus. I can't get it to puff up right. It's so frustrating! It tastes really good though.
3/1 I like rain a lot and it rained all day today. I like to watch the raindrops in the pool. It was tricky not to get the camera wet.
3/2 While baby girl and I were at the park today a flock of birds flew over to a couple trees right by the playground. They flew from one tree to another and at one point I thought they were going to fly right into my head.
3/3 A family of journals. We're only missing Daddy's.
3/4 This is how I feel about COBRA and insurance today. This isn't really my COBRA form. We didn't have a printer to print out a copy, but this is what I wanted to do to the whole stinking thing. Kind of violent huh?
3/6 We had a family project of painting all the molding today. Most of us spent the day cleaning it so it would be ready for Dad to paint. After they were cleaned, Dad took them out to the back yard and blasted them with his paint gun. The bushes were an unfortunate but necessary casualty.
3/7 She had clothes on when I put her in bed... The little goof has taken to stripping. She likes to be able to see her belly button, so she unzips her pajamas, and this is how I found her when I went to go to bed last night. She was surprisingly warm for being almost completely naked, but I put the pajamas back on her anyway.
3/8 It rained again today for most of the day, but just before sunset the rain cleared up and the sun came out. This is a picture of a puddle on our sidewalk reflecting a tree and some clouds.
3/9 Spring is coming! It was a nice 75 degrees today and flowers are popping up everywhere. This flower was in the ground cover around a tree stump. It looks blue, but it was really bright purple. It's really weird that my camera captured it looking so blue.
3/10 "End of the Trail" by James Fraser. My Grandma bought this statue for my dad. He has a wall hanging that shows the same scene that was his grandmother's.
3/11 There's a whole tree of these flowers in front of a house in our neighborhood. It's this beautiful purple patch in a still fairly gray world.
3/12 This is the same flower I took a picture of a couple days ago, but in the morning. Does it look any more purple in the sun?
3/13 Only a week and a half late... Here's me at 7 months pregnant. Do I look bigger? I sure feel it.
3/14 Happy Pi Day everyone!
3/15 It's spring cleaning time. Today we did the bathroom cabinets and drawers.
3/17 This is the playground we go to a couple times a week. It's just the perfect size for toddlers. The steps and slides are shorter and lower so short stuff can navigate the whole playground without help. I love it. Way to go Plano Parks and Recreation.
3/20 We went to the beach! It was a blast. We got all wet and went through two outfits. Luckily the onesie dried (mostly) so we could put it back on and she didn't have to go naked.
3/21 My sister's friend REALLY likes yellow and little munchkin REALLY likes her shoes. They go clear up to her waist!
3/22 My sister and her friend fixed up my Grandpa's house. It looks so much better than it used to. New carpet in the livingroom and master bedroom, new furniture, new paint, new refrigerator, and a LOT of general cleaning and organizing. They've done a lot with the yard too... planted a garden, revived the trees, etc.
2/23 A flower in my grandpa's yard. Most of the yard is weeds, but he has some really pretty flowers here and there. I thought it was really interesting that one petal has a tiger-like pattern on it. It's only on the one petal though.
3/24 The view from my Grandpa's backyard. I wish I could do it justice with a picture. This is about 1/6 of the view and it's better in person. Oh well.
3/26 I got flour on my nose while I was baking. I got flour everywhere, really, but everyone teased me about my nose.
3/27 When Dad paints outside he does it on the bushes and the leaves end up various degrees of white. I think the speckled effect is very nice.
3/28 My mom has two of these vases to go with the "roman" style molding in the livingroom. I really like black and white photography, so I'm experimenting...
3/29 I kind of cheated. I took this picture two days ago, but I wanted to see what it looked like in black and white. It wasn't all that nice, but the with a little color it's kind of nice.
3/30 The little one wanted to play DDR with her uncle today. Unfortunately her uncle didn't appreciate the "help" so much, so we decided to make her her own DDR pad. I drew the recognizable parts, but I think her additions were pretty nice.
3/31 Mom has a windchime with stone pieces forming the chimes. They're really pretty stone.
4/1 Another little taste of Texas.
4/3 Another rendition of the End of the Trail image. This is the original picture that my Grandma had on her wall and she gave to my Dad at some point.
4/4 Happy Easter! We had waffles for breakfast and ham for dinner and this is little one's cute new dress. Man is it hard to get a toddler to hold still!
4/5 I'm making baby blankets. I got all set up and ready to go during naptime today and then realized I hadn't washed and shrunk the fabric. Of course, by the time it was washed and dried naptime was done and it all had to wait for another naptime on another day.
4/6 It was really quiet for a while after dinner tonight. By the time I realized something must be going on and found the little culprit half a block of cheese was gone!
4/8 My first toothbrush. It was a major hit. She melted into a little puddle of tears when we were done brushing and wanted to do it again and again all night. Her new favorite word is "tee."
4/9 Here I am, a full 8 months pregnant. Only a few weeks to go and I think I look pretty huge.
4/10 I spent about half the day making Focaccia bread. It turned out pretty tasty, but I think it took about 8 gallons of olive oil! It was fun to get out the Bread Baker's Apprentice book again though. It's been a while. I was going to do a challenge to make all the breads in that book with a blog I was following. I made it about four weeks, but I've enjoyed the book anyway.
4/12 Anyone know what this is?
4/13 My mom loves her Irises.
4/14 More Irises
4/16 Belly! The camera can see my toes... This was actually taken about a half an hour before my water broke.
4/17 Happy Birthday little one! Here she's in NICU. She was there for about a day after she quit breathing and turned gray a few hours after she was born. She did fine, though, and we haven't had any more breathing problems.
4/22 Family nap time!
4/23 We left her for five minutes... I guess we need to be careful to support her head a little better. She didn't seem bothered by it - she was pretty happy there bent in half.
4/28 My mom and dad's breadmaker makes the most beautiful dough. I love to make rolls with it. I put everything in the machine and an hour and a half later I get beautiful dough I get to mold into rolls, cinnamon buns, foccacia bread, whatever I want. I love it.
5/3 A rainstorm made a beautiful double rainbow and a really nice sunset.
5/4 Little tiny feet. Yesterday was her due date. Instead she's two and a half weeks old.
5/5 The sun was shining through a window on this bottle and it looked like it was glowing. I really like the reflection in the picture behind the bottle.
5/7 Here's the littlest one. She fell asleep on her Daddy. She looks kind of like a frog.
5/9 The magnolia is in bloom. I love magnolias. Their big white flowers smell so good and I really like their big waxy leaves.
5/10 I made little hand mittens for the baby :) Now she can't scratch her face anymore. She's given herself some good scrapes.
5/15 Grandma made a cute little dress. We told her to smile... This is what we got.
5/18 I found a blog that explained how to make vanilla extract. I've been meaning to try it for a couple of months now, and we finally got all the stuff this week. This is just after we put it together. We shake it periodically and it will get darker over the next several weeks.
5/19 One day and it's already way darker!
5/19 Little one went swimming with her Uncle. He gave her a nice hairdo.
5/22 Vanilla update! It's getting pretty dark.
5/23 A little late, but happy one month Birthday!
5/24 My husband took this picture, actually. These cool clouds were crossing the moon and I saw them while I was walking the baby outside (I do a lot of that). I called him out and got the camera and by the time I got the camera back the clouds had pretty much passed. So he took this one, but I found the subject so I claim it :)
5/27 I found a cool bird's nest near the pool.
5/31 my husband heated and arranged me some lunch. The cherry is for color. I think he did a really nice job. It's a pork chop and orange rice we had for dinner the night before.
6/1 I actually took this picture yesterday, but it was hilarious, so I'm posting it today. Today is her Birthday, anyway, we just celebrated early. We had a joint party for little one and my sister. As little one was opening her presents my brother started cheering and saying "rip, tear, bite!" So... she bit it. I wish I could get her to obey that well all the time.
6/2 Stringing the bass. My brother finally got around to restringing his bass guitar
6/5 My sister's pool party! It was pretty fun.
6/7 She LOVES dogs... from a distance.
6/9 A Utah storm. The clouds were really cool until it started hailing.
6/10 We went to the Hare Krishna temple while we were in Utah. They had llamas, peacocks, parrots, and cows. The peacocks kind of just wandered around and this one let me get really close to it.
6/17 We stopped at Mesa Verde on our trip. These are the cliff palace ruins. We went to the spruce house ruins, too. They were really impressive.
6/18 Getting so strong!
6/19 Darker and darker. According to a couple of the instruction sets I read we can use it by now. Others say to wait from a couple more weeks to a couple more months.
6/24 Little one got a tattoo at a party. She's pretty excited about it, but was mad that there weren't more to put on.
6/25 The sun was setting and lit up the bottom of this branch and only those 6 leaves. It made them look gold and was a really neat contrast right next to the other leaves. I thought it was interesting that the sun fell only on those leaves.
6/26 Little one wanted to be a "baby" too. She asked to be wrapped up in a blanket and then she wanted a pacifier and then she wanted to be rocked in the baby carrier. She even pretended to sleep and cry.
6/27 The fan is moving and I didn't adjust the colors at all.
6/29 Have I mentioned how hard it is to take pictures of babies? Always blurry. Sigh.
7/1 Baby clothes... so cute.
7/2 My backyard in black and white
7/3 More of my yard.
7/4 I think cars always look nice in black and white.
7/5 Happy 5th of July everyone! We celebrated today. Red white and blue angel food cake dessert... yum!
7/6 A little uncle time. The girls love their uncles. It was so cute, my brother yelled from the other room "I've got your picture of the day..." and I went in to the living room and there they were - all cuddled together.
7/7 The sunset made some really cool lighting outside the other day that made the grass look an almost glowing green. It was really neat looking, but I'm not sure it shows very well in the picture. I do like the tree though.
7/11 Littlest one had her blessing today. She looked way cute in her white dress. She smiles a lot now - it's soooo cute.
7/21 Okay, I know this looks kind of gross, but it was kind of cool. It involves me being slightly idiotic, but I'll tell you the story anyway. I was cooking and had grease in the pan I needed to drain. So I got a yogurt container. Yes, it occured to me that it would just melt, but I poured the hot grease in anyway. Sure enough, it melted, but it a really neat way. All the plastic in the yogurt container melted and then floated to the top of the grease, leaving the wrapper holding the shape of the container with a plastic disc at the top. You can see the original shape of the container on the right, the wrapper that was left and didn't melt on the left and the disc that was left front and center. It was so cool to watch we almost did it again.
7/22 I put littlest one in the corner of the chair while I went to get a diaper and when I came back, little one had climbed up next to her. They're little buddies sharing a chair. Can you tell it's early in the morning? Look at that hair!
7/24 A fountain at Margitsziget. Margit Sziget is an island in the middle of the Danube that has been turned into a park. They had classical music playing and I think the fountain was supposed to be accompanying it. It's a beautiful fountain.
7/25 Beware the dreaded jammies monster!
7/26 Pretty Gerbera daisies for no particular reason. Have I mentioned that flowers are hard to photograph?
7/27 A hedgehog I ran into on the way home today. I think he must have been ill because he moved awfully slowly and didn't really run away - even after he unrolled.
7/29 Moving day! Our suitcases become moving boxes for a day and we get a new apartment. Unfortunately we're cheap and it's not much nicer than the one we've got.
8/1 Fall peaches. Delicious.
8/5 A late Birthday. Great Grandma gave us some money and we're just now getting to actually buying the present...
8/8 Our new apartment came with this super old school TV and remote. The thing was about 3/4 the length of my forearm.
8/8 How do you fall asleep UNDER a book? Such a talented child.
8/9 It's a dragonfly. I know you can't really tell, but this is only about one fifth of the original picture and I was so impressed that you could see it at all when I cropped it that much that I saved it. You can even see it's wings!
8/10 The building next door. It's really yellow. And it's kind of pretty as the sun is setting.
8/11 Hungarians make pickles in the Summer, so we decided to try it. They're surprisingly quick and relatively easy to do.
8/12 They get cloudy after a day in the sun.
8/14 A rare sight. A window in Europe with a screen. Apparently they're becoming more popular as I've seen a couple in the last few days. Weird.
8/16 All pickled, strained and ready to eat. They're different from your standard pickle, but pretty tasty.
8/17 Look how big she's getting! If only I could get her to smile while I'm taking pictures...
8/18 "Peasant bread." It's 3 kilos - 6 1/2 pounds. And nearly as big as my little munchkin.
8/25 We went to a marzipan museum in Eger. They had all sorts of crazy stuff there made out of marzipan. This is the biggest in a set of 10 or so nesting dolls.
8/29 An apple that looks like an old man. I think it's cute. It was a little squishy to eat though.
8/30 I. got me roses. They were really delicate and turned out nice in black and white.
8/31 Our gas water heater in our bathroom. It reminds me of communism. It's very effective, though.
9/1 The light in our entryway. All our light fixtures (most of them anyway) are heavy, big and metal. I can't decide if they're bulky or quaint.
9/3 My husband brought me home a basil plant! It smells really good and we're going to use it to make tomato soup. I hope the winter here doesn't kill it.
9/4 I'd like to share with you all one of my new favorite places in the world. It's called the Vasarcsarnok, or the Great Market Hall in English. You can buy sauerkraut there in a bag. You can buy whole pickled cabbage leaves there in a bag. You can buy langos there. Not in a bag, because it gets eaten too quickly.
9/6 I mentioned pickled whole cabbage leaves... this is what you do with pickled whole cabbage leaves. You make stuffed cabbage. And then you eat it. And then you are happy.
9/8 Almas pite. It's basically apple pie, I guess, and really delicious.
9/9 Are there any gucks in there?
9/13 We went up to castle hill today. The Lanchid and Szent Istvan's Baszilika are really pretty from up there. Parliament is, too, but it didn't make it onto this picture
9/14 We've been wandering around Budapest the last couple days and it's been a little hectic. In the hectic-ness I let my camera batteries run down, and just got them recharged tonight, so you get a picture of the thing that makes the running around possible. My sleepy wrap. I love this carrier and so does the baby. It's great for public transportation.
9/16 Ahhhhhhh!
9/17 Note to self: Find a decent mirror before taking a picture of myself.
9/18 A broken pipe or something made a small fountain on our street. It brought a whole bunch of sand up from under the road.
9/19 Little one wanted help putting on her shoes. Naturally if you can't even do it yourself, your little sister ought to be completely capable, right?
9/20 Our washing machine's guts. It got some new ones today after the old ones exploded last week.
9/22 Munchkin lined her little shoes in a nice little row. She was supposed to be getting her tennis shoes so we could go to the park.
9/23 Momento Park is outside of downtown Budapest and has statues from Budapest's soviet days.
9/30 Morning cuddle time!
10/1 I took a class last night on Thai cooking. It was a ton of fun and they gave us these cool hats! I know I look a little silly, but it was fun none the less. Hubby and I spent our date night tonight making a cake, so he wore the apron (they gave me one of those too) and I wore the hat.
10/4 Pretty much my favorite book lately.
10/9 Glowing candle
10/11 Flowers from the garden outside our house.
10/15 Our favorite ice cream place. Flavors we've tried: Straciatella, Gorgonzola Mascarpone, Lavender Rosemary, Lemon Turo Cake, Lemon Mint Sherbet.
10/17 Little one has a new computer! Her Daddy made it for her in hopes that she would leave the grown up computers alone a little more. So far it actually has helped. I love the little mouse that goes with it.
10/19 Fall leaves. I looked out my window and saw a rainbow.
10/21 Fall leaves. Winter threatens.
10/23 There's a bear farm about an hour from where we live. You can go see older bears and buy honey to feed them. This one really liked peanut flavored puffed grain.
10/24 We have pancakes for Sunday brunch every Sunday. Sometimes they're crepe style, sometimes Hungarian, sometimes American. Cheese and basil were the favorite this week.
10/27 Little buddies
10/28 We found some HUGE leaves. They're as big as little one's head
10/29 I found a leaf skeleton. I have no idea how this happened, but the leaf was all degraded away except for the veins. It was just sitting on the grass outside our apartment.
10/30 Chair art in Vienna. Who needs art museums anyway? Vienna's lovely by the way.
10/31 Happy Halloween! From our little pumpkin.
11/5 Sunset outside my window.
11/9 We got a new washer! It's so much more modern looking than our old one. It seems to spin the clothes better too. They dry faster.
11/10 Me and my babies :) As little one would say "Nice gorls."
11/12 Szent Istvan Baszilika at night. This is one of my favorite places in Budapest so far. The inside is beautiful.
11/13 I finally got slippers! Yay for Ikea! Yay for orange!
11/15 Our old school door handles and keys. All our doors have this style handle. On this door the lock has actually been painted in, the lock hasn't worked in so long, but the key is still there anyway.
11/16 I carry littlest one in a wrap on my front and little one likes to play Mommy to her baby, so she wears her baby on her front too.
11/17 Growing, growing. Monthly baby picture.
11/21 Look what I can do! She climbed up there all by herself!
11/23 Ikea rules the world here. I love their kids dishes. The dishes are my arch enemy every night, though.
11/24 I opened a drawer the other day and found it full of random keys. I have no idea what they go to, but they're pretty exciting.
11/26 Our friends live up on a hill in Buda and have the nicest view of the city from their balcony. We watched their kids the other day and I took advantage of a chance to take a picture. The bright building on the left is the Parliament building. The others I'm not entirely sure about.
11/27 First snow!
12/1 Mmmm... Strudel for Family Home Evening. I forgot to take another picture when it came out of the oven :( I like the escaping apple slice, though.
12/3 Szent Istvan at Christmas time. There's a huge wreath and a nativity scene in front of the basilica.
12/4 Our heater is our favorite thing today. It's cold!
12/5 Szent Miklos (The Hungarian Santa Clause) comes the night of the 5th and leaves candy or a rod in your shoes. You're supposed to leave your boots on the window sill, but we don't really have much of a window sill, so we left our shoes on a table by the window.
12/6 He came! I had to snap the picture quick. 2 year olds aren't very patient.
12/8 Winter activities. Coloring with colored pencils.
12/10 We discovered that there's a nerve clinic less than a block from us, so we went to check it out. It's a beautiful building with an interesting gate.
12/11 The kids at the Christmas party went to town on the peanuts. Pretty soon the whole floor was covered with shells.
12/14 Loot from the playgroup cookie swap. So good.
12/15 A night train! Little one was so excited it took us at least an hour to get her to go to sleep. It was a fun experience, if not the best sleep I've ever had.
12/16 Frauenkirche in Munich. I think I really like Munich. It's a fun city.
12/17 Neuschwanstein. Man did it snow! And if you ever go in the Winter don't bother to take a stroller. It's a pain to get up the mountain in the snow and they don't even let you take it inside. Too many stairs.
12/18 These have been my favorite items at the Christmas markets. I love the Christmas markets and I've been dying to get one of these beautiful globes, but I just know I would break it either on the way back to Budapest or in a few years on the flight back to the US.
12/19 Salzburg from the fortress.
12/21 An ornament I bought at the Munich Chritmas Market. We put up our tree today.
12/22 The blacksmith stall at the Budapest Christmas Market. Last minute Christmas shopping... check.
12/23 We've discovered that little one likes to watch exercise shows. This is her version of pilates.
12/24 Santa stash for little one. She's gotten sooooo much candy this year from various sources. We're recycling it. This batch came from Daddy's school party.
12/25 Life is good. Kinder egg in the mouth, new dolly stroller in hand, we're ready to go.
12/26 A little Christmas leftover. Beigli is a Hungarian Christmas bread. This one has chestnut filling but the traditional fillings are poppy seed or walnut.
12/27 After a warm and rainy Christmas we get a cold snap. We woke up to snow on our windows. It's supposed to be one of those weeks where if it does get above freezing it's only by a degree or two.
12/28 Snow day! About 20 seconds after I took my last picture and turned off my camera littlest one face planted right in the snow. It was one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen, but we hurried inside after that and got her warmed up.
12/29 Failed Pogácsa. Sigh. Te recipe looked so good and they're fabulous from the pastry shops.
12/30 Ice on the INSIDE of the window. It must be cold.
12/31 I began with bagels, I'll end with bagels. Happy New Year everyone!
