The entire group at the Orchard Grove Shopping Center in Thurmont at the ride start; this includes those doing the entire 108 miles and those doing 50 miles.
Don't look back, Sheldon; they might be gaining on you
The ride begins by climbing MD77 through Catoctin Mountain Park
C-cubed: Craig, Catherine climbing MD77
Chuck - his derailleur broke; he had to turn back; at least it was downhill coming back
Betsy and Frank
Martha climbs too quickly to catch in focus
Harry and Donna climbing MD77; I really like this picture
The group is up ahead
Martha smiling, even on this tough climb
Sugar Ray strikes a pose
Sheldon turned around at the top to head back to work; his century was the next day and was much faster than ours today
Chris leads at the summit of the climb
Chris awaiting the group in Smithsburg at the bottom of the descent
Matt awaits as well
Craig has pulled in also
Catherine and Betsy
The group heads south on Crystal Falls Drive, just east of Hagerstown and south of Smithsburg
Simon; mountains to the west in the background; far-off clouds are in the distance (Crystal Falls Dr)
Catherine (Crystal Falls Dr)
Ray (Crystal Falls Dr)
Further along; we are headed north on Mt Aetna Rd (I think)
Doug; that's not just a bag on his handlebars; it's also a jacket
The top of the mountain to the right is the village of Cascade, MD and Fort Ritchie
Rest stop in Leitersburg MD
Craig thinks he is sneaking up on me as I take a self-portrait in glass
Craig is always all smiles
This is the "Barney Bridge"; Dr. Borkman or Rosy can tell you the story
Doug looks at the clouds coming our way; just a few sprinkles materialized
The Road Less Traveled
The bridge not traveled; it was under construction; PENNDOT is working on a lot of the I-81 bridge crossings
Follow the detour (it added six miles)
Back on the route
Lunch at Vinnie's Pizza in Chambersburg
Departing Vinnie's to head east toward Cashtown and Chambersburg
Uh-oh; this bridge is also under construction; we asked permission from the highway workers to pass; the Bridge Keeper allowed us to pass; Chris was able to answer his three questions correctly
This is what they were doing
Catherine also answered her three questions correctly
Catherine; I was taking a nap on the road as she passed me by
Matt catching some flies; or maybe he was singing "Brave Sir Robin"
The ridge that lies between us and Gettysburg; a long climb, but not difficult
On the descent on Old Route 30 into Cashtown PA
This is where Old Route 30 joins Lincoln Highway (new US30); my uncle drove to Oregon fro Philly on route 30 in the 1940's; I like that we cycled the same road he drove on over 60 years ago
The Doug
Gettysburg; Simon thinks I was aiming for him; I discretely was trying to capture the pretty pedestrian walking in the background while pointing the camera backward
Rest stop at the minimart on Steinwehr Ave
Bill Preston snapped this shot of us loitering there
Heading south on Business Route 15 south of Gettysburg
Ditto
Passing through the battlefield; always a somber time
Simon approaches the Sachs Road Covered Bridge off Millerstown Rd
Thanks Edna & Fred; you two rock
Approaching Mt St Mary's in Emmitsburg
Reaching Thurmont; one mile to go on this 108-mile jaunt
