We are fairly certain that the two Peregrines we found at this complex in Pickering, Ontario, Canada is Quest and she was not alone. We found her with a handsome Tiercel (seen above). There was no way to get a closer look. We never did see her antenna. Kathy O, Shaky, Carrie and I decided at the last moment to take a trip to Canada to search for Quest. Her most current transmitter readings had her in both Pickering and Tam O'Shanter. Kathy and I left really early. We first checked Tam O'Shanter. There were a lot of tall buildings, any of which would suit Quest. We looked around for a couple hours before heading over to Pickering. No luck there either. At 1:00 pm, we decided to head out for lunch. At 2:00 pm, Shaky and Carrie arrived, we met at a small park near a complex of buildings.
At 3:15 pm, we spotted a Falcon flying above the complex. Carrie yelled that there were two of them! We watched as one landed on a power line tower. The other flew out towards the lake. We drove a little closer, but the Falcon took off and flew towards the complex. Over the next hour or so, we would see one of two falcons flying around the buildings. Shaky and Carrie had their scope (I forgot mine!) and Kathy pointed out a spot to check. Yes! We found one of them. While watching through the scope, Carrie spotted a 2nd Peregrine near this one, but it dropped out of sight.
As I was watching through the scope, The Peregrine took off. Then there were two heading towards us. We watched them both fly over us heading north. They were talon tagging! So playful! Sorry to say I was not able to get pictures. The sun was so intense, my camera wouldn't focus.
We were not able to see an antenna on the remaining Falcon. We believe that the one that flew north around 5 pm was Quest and the one in this picture was her mate. They are definitely a pair! The Tiercel took off and flew back towards the complex.
He landed on the same spot he was on before flying off with Quest. We waited until almost dark. We never did see Quest return, but we just may not have seen her.
We were all very excited. We were sure we had found Quest. I had hoped to get a picture of her, but it wasn't meant to be. I'm so happy that she has found a mate. Would they attempt to raise a family next year? Would her transmitter fall off soon? Kathy and I said our goodbyes to Shaky and Carrie who were going to stay overnite and check on Quest again Sunday morning. Carrie called to say they saw both Quest and her mate this morning. I hope we'll hear more about what they saw in a future report. We were all really happy to see Quest doing well and hoped to see her and her mate again soon.
