L'viv City - Kyiv Craft Festival
We went to L'viv in western Ukraine where we each presented at a conference on "the city". Fascinating mix of scholars and students from eight countries including Moldova, Belarus, Kazahkstan and Austria. L'viv is where Linda will teach from February to June 2008, so while there, we chose an apartment on Rynok Square (Old Market Square, now City Hall square). L'viv was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and was the third most important city in the empire, after Vienna and Prague. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was spared bombardment during WWII, so it is often described as what Europe used to look like. Slav, one of our friends there, described it as "what Europe could have looked like". Opera House, theater and philharmonic each host performances several times per week, all are within 7 minutes' walk of Linda's apartment. Here, also, are photos of a craft fair outside Kiev.
