Jareds Bearhawk Project

EAA 309 Chapter Project Visit Our host was Jared Yates, a relatively new member of 309, is building a Bearhawk quick-build kit from Avipro Aircraft with a Lycoming O-360 engine and a constant- speed prop. Recent progress includes avionics wiring, fabric covering on the control surfaces and seat upholstery. The next steps include building the cowling and exhaust system. The project is at the Wilson E40 airport south of Hickory.

EAA Grassroots 2011

EAA309 members Chuck Porter, John Wigney, Sam Stewart, Fred Darnell, Eric Roberts, Bob Allen, Ray Brown all showed up early to set up in expectation of over a hundred pilot enthusiasts for EAA President/CEO Rod Hightower's event. Michael Zeeveld ran the audio/visual and Scott Staley did the photography. One problem no electrical power as the area had bad thunderstorms the night before and the airport area was without power. Fred Darnell brought a generator and wired it into our panel we were up and running! Had over 130 attendee's for Rod's very entertaining presentation on the state of EAA and aviation in general with over an hour long Q&A session. Rod has a great passion for aviation and will be a tremendous asset for EAA, keeping all of our best interests in mind as an advocate for both experimental and general aviation. He not only flies a beautiful warbird AT-6 but restored a PT-17 Stearman and flies both regularly. Thanks Rod for the visit - we look forward to your return!

International Young Eagles Rally

EAA 309 flew 40 Young Eagles on International Young Eagles Day at the Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport (EQY). John Brattain, Apt Gen Mgr provided us their largest hangar. The event was co-sponsored by the FlyCarolina Flight School. Dick Kruse, Gen Mgr gave demonstrations of their Flight Simulator while CFI Bruce Johnson gave pre-flight inspections on their Piper Arrow. The scouts assisted with Tom Gibson dispatching all flights and Gordon Gregoraschuk had tables set up for the kids to cut out airplanes to test flight them in the hangar. Jeanne Cassell and Carolyn Porter did the registration and certificate printing. Alex Becker and his crew grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and provided tables and chairs for us to relax and refresh. Our pilots were Steve Kahn, Bob Thayer, John Wigney, Bob Cassell, Elvin Smith, Dale Ensing, and Abdullah Bawagad. The Army National Guard furnished a helicopter and crew for a static display. Scott Staley was our photographer.

Air Force ROTC class with Bill Smith

At the request of Dr. Louis D. Werder, Captain, USAF (Retired) Senior Aerospace Science Instructor AFJROTC NC-955, EAA 309 Young Eagles Coordinators Dale Ensing and Chuck Porter presented the EAA Young Eagles Program to two Piedmont High School classes and one Porter Ridge High School class in the Air Force ROTC Program. Dale gave an introduction of the EAA, Chuck then presented the EAA Young Eagles Program, then Dale gave a presentation on the EAA B-17 and his role as an EAA B-17 Crew Member, and then WWll Veteran Fighter Pilot Bill Smith told the cadets about his combat experience as a pilot in WWll.

EAA Skiplane Fly-In

EAA Ski plane Fly-In is a festive gathering - snow or no snow - and was held on Saturday, January 23, at EAA’s Pioneer Airport, Oshkosh, WI, for the annual EAA Ski plane Fly-In. If there is enough snow on the ground, an impressive array of ski planes will be welcomed. If the ground remains bare, airplanes are welcome to land at Wittman Regional Airport. A shuttle service will run all day to and from Orion and Basler FBOs. Complimentary chili and cake will be served to celebrate the birthday of EAA’s matriarch, Audrey Poberezny, at Pioneer Airport beginning at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to this free of-charge event, so put on your best winter clothes and head out to the airport!. This traditional winter event actually brings EAAers together for three reasons: the Skiplane Chile Fly-In, the celebration of EAA’s founding, and Audrey Poberezny’s birthday. Chapter Vice President Randy Utsey and Secretary Chuck Porter attended while at the EAA Chapters Leadership Workshop.

EAA Leadership Academy

Chuck Porter and Randy Utsey attended the EAA Chapter Leadership Academy at Oshkosh, WI, Jan 22 - 24, 2010. We both found it very enjoyable and highly recommend it to all chapter leaders. One of highlights of the weekend was being with the Founder of EAA Paul and Audry Poberezny who joined us at meals and gave us a personal tour of the EAA Museum Founders Wing. The other highlight was VP Adam Smith's behind-the-ropes after hours tour of the museum. We all were amazed of the fantastic details of each key exhibit that Adam shared with us. These two items made our trip more that worth while!

EAA Kermit Weeks Hangar

We enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of EAA's Kermit Weeks Hangar aircraft maintenance and restoration center. It was a great opportunity to see a facility that is normally closed to the public and to learn from staff and volunteers about the fascinating work that goes on in EAA’s main restoration and maintenance facility.

Christmas 2009

Charlotte EAA Chapter 309 held their Family Christmas Party on December 14, 2009, at the Acropolis Restaurant. We were honored to have Zach Freeman, our Moscarelli Flight Schlorship receipient and Zach's mother Maureen Freeman, along with Zach's flight instructor Kathy Jones. The chinese gift exchange was very entertaining and all had a great evening. So wonderful to have Mott Brown with us!

Glasair Sportsman

EAA Chapter 309 enjoyed a real treat - our May 2009 Chapter Meeting was a Project Visit at Jim Schnicker's Hangar at Lake Norman Airpark to see and learn the details of his Glasair Sportsman 2+2 construction. The pizza was great and the deserts were delicious. We are most grateful for the kind hospitality that Jim and Marjorie showed us! It is Monthly Meetings like this that makes membership worthwhile and truly enjoyable!

EAA Ford Tri-Motor

EAA Charlotte Chapter 309 brought the 1929 EAA Ford Tri-Motor to the Concord Regional Airport August 28th - September 1st 2008, so that the Charlotte area public could have a chance to experience the early days of air travel in an aircraft that made aviation history - the first scheduled passenger flight as well as the first scheduled air freight flight!

RED BULL HELICOPTER

Red Bull’s BO-105 CBS helicopter, a stock Eurocopter/Messerschmitt Boelkow Blohm, is flown by Chuck Aaron, who holds the distinction as the only pilot licensed in the United States to fly aerobatics in a helicopter. His performances at EAA Airventure 2008 feature aerobatic maneuvers achieved previously only in fixed-wing aircraft. The helicopter derives its power from two 425 hp Allyson Rolls Royce C-20B turbine engines that drive composite rotor blades mounted to a solid titanium fixed rotor head. The Red Bull Helicopter is certificated in the experimental exhibition category, allowing the pilot to push the envelope of the aircraft’s flight capabilities. Hals Sonex

Hal Schwab's Sonex has a beautiful new paint job! He introduced his scratch built airplane to EAA Chapter 309 at the May 21, 2007, monthly Chapter meeting held at his home. The new paint unveiling was featured at the 6-21-08 Multi-Chapter Fly-In at Lancaster, SC. The detailed scientific paint preparation Hal did was explained to the Chapter at our June Chapter meeting, an approach by a true technical expert. As Hal lifted into the air General Tom Waskow in his RV-4 was right behind him and we were treated to a fly-by that captured the eyes of all in attendnce. Congratulations to Hal and his son Stuart for their fine accomplishment!

Freds Murphy Rebel

First Flight CONGRATULATIONS to Fred Darnell!! Fred very successfully made the first flight in his wonderful Super Rebel on the morning of October 13, 2008, at the Charlotte/Monroe Executive Airport. Very well done Fred! Fred and Pam Darnell hosted the February 2008 Chapter 309 Monthly Dinner Meeting at their home so we could have an opportunity to see their Lycoming 0540 powered Murphy Super Rebel - what a treat! Now this is really a super hauler. The plane is so large that I was not able to capture the true size of the aircraft since it literally consumed their garage.

I had a wonderful time today! John Wigney picked me up at Goose Creek for an enjoyable trip to Lancaster and back. We flew over our property, slid by Monroe Regional, enjoyed a distant view of the Charlotte Skyline, and soaked in the beautuful afternoon sky. His Europa certainly is the result of a Master Craftsman with a well designed and equipped panel. The Rotax engine performed beautifully. Since I am considering using the Rotax he treated me with a detailed and impressive explanation under the cowling. Thanks John for a great afternoon!

JAARS Mission Aviation in Waxhaw, NC, is a committed group of professional pilots, aviation maintenance technicians, avionics technicians and administrative personnel who joined Wycliffe Bible Translators to provide air transportation for Bible translators and literacy workers in a number of countries. They also provide aviation services to Christian mission organizations, the local people, and governments in the countries in which they work. EAA309 hopes that JARRS will participate in our Lake Norman Fly-In scheduled for March 15, 2008, at the Lake Norman Air Park, Mooresville, NC
