Opal Ridge North Summit (2575 m)

This was an interesting scramble with quite a bit of hands-on scrambling. If you are bold enough you can get more than enough scrambling by the time you make the ridge. I started from Opal Day Use Area and hit the face direct. Bit of bushwhacking then moderate scrambling to the ridge. Some serious chinook winds greeted me on the ridge. Add some ice to the crux and I was really on the edge. Finally hitting the "summit" two more summits showed up. Once I made them, sure showed up a third one. Snowy crux and considerable exposure turned me around at this time. I trust I made the summit in Kane's book but that is not a summit by any means... The downclimb was intense too -especially that I tried another route from the ridge. That didn't work, was more difficult than the way up.

Bike Racing 2011

This year I focused on road and mountain bike racing and much less on mountaineering. Managed to collect all colours of medals mainly due to my "novice" status on the Alberta racing scene.

Gap Mtn. (Kananaskis Country), 2675 m

I think this is a classic scramble but the traffic on this peak is surprisingly low. Perhaps the low elevation and relatively long drive for a short day are to blame for this. Adrienn Hegedus, a former pro tennis player (played on the US Open) joined me while visiting Calgary.

Some friends (Vern and So) did this mountain a week before and reported great conditions and all the ascent details. Since it had been on my list for quite a while and another great weather weekend was in the forecast I decided to copycat their trip. Absolutely gorgeous mountain and views!

Banded Peak (2934 m)

This was the second year I attended the Banded Peak Challenge. This time I took my cell phone camera to take photos but the skies weren't as clear as last year. 14.5 km bike and then 4 km hike to the summit, about 1380 m gain. Managed to break the time record (2:05:46) but almost got beaten by another participant! Officially she was 4 seconds slower, not officially half minute faster...

Skogan Peak (2662 m) Attempt

My time was very limited for this trip and in the big hurry I got lost three times. I had to turn around about 500 m short and 160 m below the summit on the West Ridge to make the Stampede with the kids... The MTB ride was fairly steep with about 500 m gain then some bushwhacking and then finally alpine terrain. There was one easy-moderate downclimb on the ridge up to the point where I got. Where I turned around the ridge ahead was at least difficult and exposed scrambling for a short while. Going around is an option with quite a bit of elevation loss. The ridge itself might go as well. The downhill biking was a riot at the end!

Mt. Lorette (2487 m), Kananaskis Country

I liked Mary Barclay's Mtn so much I had to go back for its neighbour. This time I parked at Barrier Dam and biked more to have more fun! 11.2 km to the drainage then up that gully. Boy, is that a foreshortened view! The scree wasn't too bad though and the ridge later was spectacular, especially the views of "Skogan Peak".

Found a recent trip report and really liked the MTB part so repeated it myself. The mountain biking is easy but super fun with some creek crossings (you get wet) :-). The final ridge looks hard from the distance. It really is a moderate scramble, I considered facing in when climbed down.

Fairmont Mountain (2628 m), BC, Canada

This time I had no route description or beta, just loved all the snow higher up visible from the road. Sledding in July is always fun. I attempted the NW ridge but figured it could take longer than the time I was allotted by family so descended back to the valley and ascended on snow. Then got out all the way in the valley, never ending bushwhacking. No trails for a long distance looks like nobody does it from this side.

I had some free time during a conference in Banff and attempted Mt Edith. Got really lucky with the weather as cloudy skies cleared about an hour after my 10 am start. The avy forecast was low/moderate - still I had to travel on very scary terrain after the broken trail ran out. I didn't have the nerves to make it to Cory Pass and tried a more direct route but really had no chance at that point. Rope, partners, avy gear would have been necessary even in these ideal conditions... At least I made it back in time for the evening presentations...

This is a gorgeous looking peak from Highway 40 so it made it to my list. I was surprised how long was the scrambling section on the way up and hence the descent wasn't too fast either. Very good excercise and the approach trail is also beautiful.

Storm Mountain Attempts (Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada)

After a busy year at school I could finally take out my son Ben to do some scrambling. On July 1, we changed our plans on our way out and had no map. We took the wrong gully up and couldn't make it to the summit. Truth is, even if we had taken the correct gully the snow would have stopped us. On July 4 we had all the right gear but a thunderstorm turned us around about 1/2 hour from the summit.
