Banff Day Trip

On a beautiful afternoon, I took my dog Yola for a drive on highway 1A out to Banff, ostensibly to look at some photo exhibits there. I stopped and took a few pictures of a fellow trying to wind up his kite in a stiff breeze on the Ghost Reservoir, and a few of Mt Yamnuska and area. Most of the remainder were taken at Bow Falls just east of Banff townsite, and a bluff on Tunnel Mtn overlooking Banff from the northeast.

Family Day Frost at Nose Hill

Scenes of a walk we took, along with a visiting friend, to Nose Hill Park, where the hoar frost was striking as the late afternoon sun shone. I had fun converting a few of them into black & white, an "infrared" look, and more vivid blues, taking advantages of the textures, stark tonal contrasts, and minimalism.

2009 Grey Cup Parade and Festival

Photos taken of the 2009 Grey Cup Parade in downtown Calgary between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 28. It was a pleasant day, about +1 deg C, with no wind. My vantage point was on the 200 block of 6th Ave SW, across from Bow Valley Square. Shots towards the end of the gallery are of the Grey Cup Festival on Stephen Avenue. I took a few shots of Rider memorabilia in the ScotiaBank Grey Cup Experience pavilion. As well, a few street shots, including the massive lineups to get into Riderville.

Community Garden Plot 2009 - R.I.P.

On Friday, October 23, I was finally able to put our Community Garden plot at the U of C to rest. I pulled out the remaining squash, sunflower, cabbage, edamame and pole bean plants, as well as a couple of small rows of underdeveloped carrots and beets. I managed to rescue 3 viable parsnips from underneath the sunflower "trunks". I turned the earth over to allow the plot to rest over winter for another year.

Confed. Park: Yola & Bronze Leaves

Taken on one of our frequent walks in Confederation Park, near our home in Calgary. I took a few pictures of my dog Yola posing, as well as some shots of her in action on her many fruitless pursuits of squirrels. Also, the pattern of a hot September and frigid October, created a flash freeze bronze to brown colour in the willow, lilac and other shrubs that I found to be striking in the morning light.

X-CountryRunners Ice Ducks Dog

These were take on a cool, cloudy Sunday in Confederation Park in Calgary. The Calgary Roadrunners cross country running club was having a race through the park. I also liked the textures and patterns in the partly melted ice. The ducks where clamouring all around, looking for food, sliding on the ice, etc. I wish I had been able to take some better action shots of the frisbee dog.

Beautiful Plant Death: Frost in the Garden

The combination of light frost, mildew, other fungi and bug infestations has created some strange beauty in the squash and bean leaves of our community garden plot.

The Journey of Tammy's Papier Mache Chickens

These papier mache creatures Tammy made are based on real breeds of pet chickens. They are a wedding gift, made to represent the spirit of the couple. These photos were taken along our journey from Calgary, to Salt Spring Island BC.
