Ken gave us some info out of the wind in the maint. bldg
then it was off to see some of the 44 turbines that make up the site
NEG Micon 750 kW turbine - rotor diameter 159 ft (from your end zone to the other guy's 47 yd line) - rotor hub height 171 ft - rotor spins at either 14 or 22 rpm - generates power between wind speeds of 8 to 56 mph
no neighbors to bother
low rotation speed makes them quiet and relatively bird friendly
It was 12 deg F with a nice wind - tour organizer Lee Devlin braving the cold
with 12 people huddled in the base of the pylon it warmed up a bit
hub end of a blade - the blade is made of fiberglass, balsa wood, and foam
this type has 12 ft of the tip that can be turned to stop the blade
seam for tip section is right where Sandy's long grey coat hits the blade
spinner for a turbine blade hub
5 of the blue motors in the crate are used to point the turbine in the correct direction
photos would have been improved by something other than a grey background
a very interesting but cold tour
