Misty northern Oklahoma driving north on I-35 early in the morning.
An example of a common RV setup, the motorhome towing a second vehicle (often a 4WD).
One of the huge interstate freight trains on the line that passes through Greensburg.
A stack of mobile homes several miles out from Greensburg, possibly held here until the debris has been cleared at a guess.
Just managed to snap the welcome sign!
Volunteer's parked cars on the eastern edge of town.
The owner has a sense of humour.
Patriotism. A snapped off power pole, across the street are new ones erected the previous day.
Tinsel & plush toys in the remains of a house.
One of the 'better' areas, with some houses still partially standing.
A sign that came from somewhere other than there.
This is Gary, shortly after we met him.
A wooden beam missile rammed through the wall of the loungeroom. Just like in the movie Twister, but the real thing.
I leant out the window to the right shown in the previous shot to show the wooden beam from the outside.
Gary's living room, a week later. His antique furniture on the right is 400 years old.
Stairs from the living room and the wooden beam in the background.
Dust blows down the street while I load the trailer, completing the ominous scene of destruction.
The soaked basement closet where Gary and his daughter sheltered, after we took most of the stuff out of there.
The church, with 100 year old bricks, two he gave to Mandy and I as gifts :) Gary is going to find bungee cords to tie down his gear.
The snapped tower is the Greensburg Well, famous for being the world's deepest hand-dug well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Well_%28Kansas%29
Me & my Jeep.
Bare concrete slab.
Tin sheets wrapped around tree stumps.
The sign the structural engineer left on Gary's front wall.
You can see where the furniture sat during the tornado.
A photo of the neighbour's house across the street, home to the old lady Gary rescued where he found her pinned under furniture bleeding badly from lacerations to the arm. He probably saved her life.
A 360 panorama from the front edge of Gary's rooftop, comprised of 25 shots. From this 2nd storey roof, I am higher than any remaining structure in this part of town.
Gary's tin roof flashing was peeled back.
The staircase.
Bedroom left of the staircase. Who wants to sleep under the stars?
Ducky! For those who know Ducky who rides with me everywhere in my car, this is where I found him & rescued him from being bulldozed with the wreckage.
Gary's house, the left face being the front. I took the panorama shots from the edge of the top roof at the front of the house.
People who knew Gary rocked up in a Hummer and their daughter got out with her new kitten.
One of Gary's mates rolling around in a Hummer.
Mandy is camera-shy & doesn't like photos. Probably because she behaves strangely whenever she sees she is being photographed.
More camera-shy Mandy. I should have comforted her by telling her the photos would go on the web for the world to see.
The tornado stripped bark from the trees.
Crumpled cars.
The Greensburg town theatre.
The Red Cross distribution point.
Signs of support.
Some Kansas firies.
Greensburg Elementary School.
A mobile home, lifted up & dropped onto the debris of another home.
Dirt & grass splattered throughout this car. It's possible from the debris tangled in the car that it went through a house.
A street pole barely standing.
A truck stacked on a car, wedged against another truck.
A car tossed into the middle of a field, next to a flat-bed trailer.
Another truck tossed into a small flood creek.
Greensburg firies having smoko infront of their de-roofed station.
School buses damaged.
The only standing street sign I saw in the whole place.
Looking back up Main Street.
An oil well a few miles out of Greensburg on my way to Wakita.
Welcome to Oklahoma!
Welcome to Wakita
Downtown Wakita
Here's the water tower!
Pretty peaceful town.
Wakita's grain elevator.
I was here
The Twister Movie Museum.
Mandy chats with some of the locals who saw that we were from out of town because they didn't recognise my Jeep, J came over to say hi.
J and his mate's Harleys.
Kansas plates.
J, as country as country gets, with the dog that lives at the bar, who peed on his shoe and on his motorbike wheel.
American cars, Mustang & Corvette.
A nice American sunset at the end of a big day.
