River Watch 2014 Galena Area May 7 - 8
River Watch 2014 Middle Yukon Division (http://ready.alaska.gov/riverwatch). David Lee with AK DHS&EM, Ed Plumb with NOAA/NWS Fairbanks Forecast Office, and Daniel Hayden, our pilot from Wright Air Service.
River Watch operations based in Galena area and observing river conditions on the Yukon from the Ruby area to the Kaltag area.
The remaining in-place ice sheets a few miles upriver from Galena and the in-place ice from a mile or two downriver of Galena to the bend at Bishop Rock, as well as all the sheets, pans and chunks that had stopped the area all started moving at about 2PM. We observed the ice sheets at Bishop Rock fracturing and crumbling as they went around the bend, and nothing seemed to be able to stop without breaking apart. This was the last area on the Yukon River that had ice that still posed a threat.
