LightZone E510 Dyanmic Range Experiments

Experimenting with LightZone to see what the maximum dynamic range available in the RAW file is. All images shot using Olympus E-510 out the infamous dirty window (sorry, it is stuck and two floors up so I can't clean the outside). LightZone automatically applies highlight recovery, so the images include any blown highlights as part of the dynamic range. The wide range of detail at each end of the lightness range shows the camera has plenty of dynamic range and the limitation is the curve applied in RAW development to fit the full range into a reasonable range of tonalities. Every capture must have a curve applied to fit the linear data to the response of the human eye and within the limit of output media like a monitor or print, so the dynamic range shown here is that of the curve, but it shows how much the camera does capture.

E-510 Image Stabilization Test (1.2)

This series was shot of a map taped to a wall. To remove the changing light from the window to the right of the map, I closed the blinds. Two 60 watt incandescent flood lamps were setup roughly pointing up from the left and right of the map. I did not take a lot of time to make the lighting perfect, just enough to get a bright image. All photographs were shot hand held with image stabilization engaged (IS1) using the E-510 upgraded to firmware version 1.2 which offers enhanced IS. The camera was about 10ft from the map. Out of camera JPEGs adjusted in Picasa 2 using Auto Contrast and Auto Color tools. Uploaded through Picasa using Medium size, resize to 1024. I gave the pictures general quality ratings, Bad, Poor, Fair, Good.

MD 45mm f2 Comparison

Comparing the MD 45mm f/2.0 lens to the ZD 40-150mm f/3.5 @ 45mm f/4.1 Both lenses manual focus in Live View on Olympus E-510 in available light from window to right side of the picture. Developed in camera where noted, 100% crops developed in ACR 4.2 sharpen zero, lum. noise zero, color noise zero, all defaults, Auto levels, eyedropper WB on white edge of map.

Selected FSK Agricultural Photographs

A selection of photographs by my grandfather Frank S. Knoblock, who in the 1920s was a photographer for the United States Department of Agriculture. He traveled extensively across the United States, taking photographs on farms, of members of farm associations, at farm fairs and agricultural science and technology expositions.
