George Mitchell Nature Preserve

It was a lovely first day of spring at the George Mitchell Nature Preserve. This preserve covers about 1700 acres along Spring Creek in The Woodlands. It is slated to become part of the larger Spring Creek Greenway which will connect and protect up to 12,000 acres of forest on both sides of Spring Creek.

Hideout Hollow

Both the hollow and McFerrin Point lie within the bounds of Buffalo National River near the community of Compton. The hollow can be reached by a fairly easy trail but reaching the point requires and off-trail bushwack.

Million Dollar Highway

On the way home, I headed up to Ridgway, Colorado and then took Colorado 550 down from Ridgway, through Ouray and Silverton, and ultimately down to Durango. The weather was gorgeous along the section from Ouray to Red Mountain Pass known as the "Million Dollar Highway". After that, the rain closed in.

Stony Pass

On my final full day in Placerville, I got up early and drove to Silverton. I rented a jeep there and took it up the old trail over Stony Pass. This route crosses the Contintental Divide and was an major supply route for the area prior to the completion of the rail line from Durango to Silverton.

Woods Lake

The Woods Lake Trailhead in the Uncompahgre National Forest provided me with a day of hiking in beautiful unspoiled country. The weather threatened early but it ended up being a perfect day.

Black Canyon National Park

The Black Canyon was carved by the Gunnison River. Passing through the park, the river drops at an average of 95 feet per mile. By comparison, the Colorado River through Grand Canyon National Park drops only an average of 7.5 feet per mile. The Painted Wall is the highest cliff in Colorado. From river to rim it stands 2250 feet (685 meters).

Lost Maples State Natural Area

Lost Maples is located north of Vanderpool, Texas. It's a lovely place to camp and hike and is especially popular during the leaf change in the fall. I visited it on the third day of trip to the Hill Country.
