SPUR34

The 3rd Ave El 34th St Ferry Spur was built in 1880 from a N/B junction to the 3rd Ave El at the 34th St station. The line was built to service the LIRR Ferry Boat Terminal on the East River. A double-deck station at Second Ave was built concurrently with the construction of the 2nd Ave El. Ferry Spur service began July 1, 1880. The spur operated as a two-track shuttle, with trains going back and forth on each track. The spur served as a test base some of for the early electrification experiments. The Manhattan Railway Electric Substation #6 was built on 34th st and served the 2nd and 3rd Ave El and the Ferry Spur. The Ferry Spur shut down on July 14, 1930 after the LIRR ended ferry boat service. However, the structure between Second and Third Avenues remained to carry the electric power feeder cables from IRT Substation #6 to the 2nd and 3rd Ave Els until 1937. Demolition of the Spur El structure East of Second Ave began on July 15, 1931 and was completed on Sept 5, 1931.

NY Central West Side RR

The original route of Hudson River RR in Manhattan became the New York Central West Side RR. This album presents views of the West Side RR before and during the construction of the High Line, as it was called after the tracks were elevated and relocated into cuts in 1932 to eliminate street running on 10th and 11th Avenues. There are views of steam locomotives and the early tri-power (electric, battery and Diesel) locomotives and the 10th Ave Cowboys (flagmen) that preceded trains on 10th and 11th Avenues to warn people and horse drawn vehicles of the oncoming train. The High Line was in service into the 1970's. However, increased freight car lengths and heights precluded the modern freight cars from using High Line structure because of its clearances that were designed for older equipment. The increased amount of truck traffic replaced railway freight movements. Portions of the High Line were dismantled in 2007.

NYC 3rd Ave El

The New York Elevated Railroad Co began construction of Third Ave Elevated Railway in Manhattan on Nov 1, 1877. The route north from South Ferry was via State St, Front St, Coenties Slip to Pearl St, with stations at Hanover Sq, Fulton St and Franklin Sq.Then, on New Bowery and up Bowery with stations at Chatham Sq, Canal, Grand and Houston St and on Third Ave at 9th, 14th, 18th, 23rd, 27th, 34th and 42nd St, where the line turned West to the new Grand Central Depot of the NY Central Harlem and Hudson River RRs. The line opened from South Ferry to Grand Central Depot on Aug 26, 1878. Construction continued north and trains were running to 129th St by 1879.The City Hall branch opened in 1879. The 34th St LIRR Ferry Branch opened in 1880. Service to the Bronx began in 1889 via the Suburban Railway Bridge over the Harlem River. The line was electrified in 1902. The line was rebuilt from 1914 to 1916 for enhanced express service. The El ended operations in Manhattan on May 12, 1955.

Bronx 3rd Ave El

On May 12, 1955, the 3rd Ave El ended service in Manhattan leaving only the Bronx portion of the El in operation from Gun Hill Road to 149th St. The Suburban Railway portion of the El from the Harlem River to 149th St remained in non-revenue service until the signaling and x-over at 149th St was installed. In 1956, the wood MUDC El cars and the 1939 World's Fair cars were taken out of service. The center express track was taken out of service. The Harlem River complex was one of the early attempts to link the New Haven RR with the El system, which included a material yard and a steam locomotive was kept for switching use in non-electrified trackage. The Bergen Cutoff at 144th St replaced the junction at 150th St to the Westchester Ave Line. There was a yard at 179th St and the Botanical Garden Station was the end of the line until 1920 when the Webster Ave Extension was built to the double deck station at Gun Hill Road. The 3rd Ave El in the Bronx ended service on April 29, 1973.

NYC 6th Ave El

On June 17, 1872, the Gilbert Elevated Railway Company was chartered by by Dr. Rufus H. Gilbert. The Gilbert Company had financial storms and legal complications and the company changed its name to the Metropolitan Elevated Railway Company. On April 19, 1876, construction of the line began at the corner of 6th Ave and 42nd St. On June 5, 1878, The Metropolitan or what became known as the 6th Ave El began operations from Rector St on Trinity Place to 58th St on 6th Ave.The route went south on 6th Ave from the original terminal at 58th St to 3rd St, where it turned east on 3rd St to West Broadway, then south on West Broadway to Murray St where it turned east for one block to Church St and south to Trinity Place. The line was connected to the 9th Ave Line via 53rd St and at Morris St for service to South Ferry. The line was electrified in 1902. The 58th St Terminal was closed in 1924. The Sixth Ave El ceased operation on Dec 4,1938 to facilitate the construction of the IND 6th Ave Subway.

NYC 9th Ave El

The Ninth Ave El began operation in 1870 as the cable powered NY West Side & Yonkers Patent Railway. It was the first elevated railway in America. The original single track line went from Dey St on Greenwich St to 29th St on 9th Ave. The cable operation failed and the line was reorganized and was converted to steam operation in 1871.The line came under control of The New York Elevated Railroad Co in 1871. The line was extended north to 61st St in 1876 and to South Ferry in 1877. In 1879 the line was extended north on Columbus (9th) Ave to 104th St and then traversed the area which would become 110th St and north to 155th St on 8th Ave in Manhattan. The line was electrified in 1902 and was extended to the Bronx in 1918 over the NY & Putnam RR bridge. The IRT 9th Ave El ceased operation in 1940 as the IND 8th Ave Subway was built to replace it. The remaining extension to the Bronx from 155th St to the Jerome Ave Line became known as the Polo Grounds Shuttle, which ended service in 1958.

Ninth Ave Elevated Yard at 158th St

The Ninth Ave Elevated Yard at 158th St was the largest of the NY Elevated Railway yards. It was used by both the Sixth and Ninth Ave Elevate Lines. The yard complex was adjacent to Polo Grounds Stadium at 158th St. The yard lead tracks continued north from the 155th St station on 8th Ave.

NYC 2nd Ave El

The Second Ave Elevated Railway was built as a three track structure by the Metropolitan Elevated Railway and began operation in 1880 from Chatham Sq to 127th St. Service was extended to the Bronx in 1886 via Suburban Railway Bridge over the Harlem River to the New Haven RR. The Line was electrified in 1902. Queensboro Bridge service to Astoria and Corona from the City Hall Terminal began in 1917 along with center express track operation. The Bergen Cut-off structure in the Bronx expedited Freeman St Express service up the Westchester Ave line. Service North of 59th St and to the Bronx ended in 1940. However, Queens operation continued until 1942, which was noted for transporting people to the World of Tomorrow at the World's Fair in Steam Era gate car trains. It was a great open air ride on the 2nd Ave El from the Park Row Terminal to Chatham Sq, where the tracks went under the 3rd Ave El tracks and then under the Manhattan Bridge to the junction with the Queens lines at 59th St.
