Staked-out garden plot area to the west of the parking lot.
Wood chips for the garden paths, donated by Dallas Tree Surgeons (http://www.planotreeservice.com/).
First digging work is stripping the grass.
A BIG THANK YOU to John Webster for donating his time and equipment to this project!
Just the grass... not much dirt.
John worked very carefully to follow the staked-out garden boundary.
And the grackles love all the grubs he exposed!
Of course the committee was there to "supervise". First Richard...
then Debbie...
It was a LONG DAY of digging with the backhoe.
On 10-May-09 Pastor David led us in a "Blessing the Garden" liturgy. See a YouTube video of the service here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVRpWOxRATo
Lots of "Plano Pure" compost to help make the soil better.
John was there again with his equipment for this job.
And this time Debbie got to drive!
After spreading the compost we needed a trench for the water line.
John and his heavy equipment again! We couldn't have done this without you, John!
Amazingly the line we chose to dig on for the trench had an old sprinkler pipe already buried there.
We leveled the trench to about 1 ft. deep...
and got ready to lay the PVC water line.
Ready to make the connection to the spigot section.
Everyone helped...
to carry the pre-formed line into place...
and set it in the trench.
Then Martin, Debbie and Betsy connected it...
to the supply line...
with lots of primer and PVC cement.
Then it was back to John and his trencher to fill it in...
and level the dirt.
Betsy tried to find the connecting point for the water supply, with supervision from Bill.
One final push with the trencher!
Then, after a day of compost tilling by Bill, it was time to stake the plots.
After his busy day on the tractor, Bill supervised as Martin measured the plots...
with some help from Herbie.
Then Bill was back on the tractor...
to spread the scalped grass and dirt over some low spots on the church grounds.
Finally, planting day! Pastor David leads the way.
Pat digs in her garden...
trying to break up the clay with expanded shale.
A "freebie" from the trash... thanks neighbor!
One of the first gardens planted.
Mr. George was an early planter.
Another early planted garden.
Pat set her bean poles.
Everyone was provided a blank sign to customize for their plot.
Pat "outstanding in her field" ;-)
Another customized sign.
And another well-planted garden.
