0 Waste Challenge Kicks Off

Sunny Delight Beverages Company (SDBC) is back with an exciting new recycling challenge. Building on the momentum from last year’s “Bin It 2 Win It” recycling challenge, SDBC is determined to help three schools achieve “0” waste to landfill. All five of SDBC’s U.S. plants are now zero waste facilities, and to reinforce this mission more broadly, CEO Billy Cyr is challenging three schools to reduce their waste by 25% during the six-month “0 Waste Challenge”. SDBC is providing a grant that will not only allow each school to continue their recycling efforts through Rumpke, but it will also provide food waste collection, hauling, and offsite composting through Future Organics. Beginning in November, each school will conduct a waste audit to determine specific steps that will lead them towards zero waste to landfill. Waste Audits

Take a sneak peek at our new "0" Waste Challenge with Sunny Delight Beverages Company. Students and faculty from St. Francis de Sales and Dater High School conducted their first waste audit last week to get ready for the challenge. They examined their current waste stream to determine how they can reduce the amount of waste they send to the landfill by 25%.

Dow Chemical Company Volunteers

Volunteers from the Dow Chemical Company arrived in Avondale this afternoon to restore two prominent abandoned buildings on Vine Street. Joined by an alligator and an angolan python from the Cincinnati Zoo, 20 volunteers from the Reading plant enhanced 36 barricades with painted representations of windows and doors. In addition to painting the buildings’ multiple windows and doors, volunteers removed 120 pounds of weeds and overgrown brush that made the property an eyesore in the community. This effort is part of Dow’s commitment to environmental stewardship and corporate citizenship. Since 2008, Dow has been a national sponsor of the Great American Cleanup (GAC), and this year they plan to engage in 30 cleanup events across the nation by collaborating with local Keep America Beautiful affiliates. Bin It 2 Win It Finale

Through a grant from SDBC, each of the six participating schools received a single stream recycling dumpster which was collected and weighed each week by Rumpke. Both KCB and SDBC provided educational resources and programming throughout the contest to more than 3,461 students to help them learn more about sustainability. The schools were ranked by the amount recycled per capita. Billy Cyr, CEO of SDBC, and Ellen Iobst, Chief Sustainability Officer of SDBC, drove up in a vintage 1960s Volkswagen bus to award the top three winning schools with cash prizes and a plaque made from recycled material. In first place with a total of 14,040 pounds was St. Francis de Sales. Their students recycled over 61 pounds per person and each received a sweatshirt made from recycled plastic bottles as a special prize for coming in first. The second place school, Covedale Elementary, recycled a total of 14,185 pounds – or 22.5 pounds per student. In third place was Cheviot Elementary which recycled

2011 State Roadway Cleanup

Over 100 volunteers participated in the 2011 State Roadway Cleanup organized by Keep Cincinnati Beautiful (KCB) and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). KCB’s 2nd annual online poll allowed Cincinnatians the opportunity to select the Top 10 highway ramps most in need of a cleanup. In just a few short hours, volunteers collected 820 bags of trash and filled eight dump trucks with landscaping debris. As promised, ODOT cleaned the ramps which were not safely accessible by volunteers.

Wings of Wonder How Litter Hurts Animals

During the winter months, themes from KCB’s How Litter Hurts Animals program are coupled with the Cincinnati Zoo’s Wings of Wonder show to educate students about the dangers that a littered environment poses to animals in our own backyard. During this 45-minute assembly, targeted at ages K-6th grade, students are introduced to eight different species of animals that fly, scamper and crawl right in front of them.

Just Desserts Community Awards Ceremony

We are proud to honor communities and individuals who, through ongoing efforts, are utilizing public-private partnerships to prevent littering, improving their community's waste handling practices, encouraging recycling efforts, and preserving the environment. We believe that positive reinforcement is critical in order to influence and change behavior. We distribute over $4,000 in cash awards to community leaders an our annual awards ceremony, Just Desserts. The 2010 event was held at H.J. Benken Florist & Greenhouse. Sunny D Bin It 2 Win It Kick-Off

In honor of America Recycles Day, Sunny Delight Beverages Co. (SDBC) and Keep Cincinnati Beautiful (KCB) celebrated the start of their new recycling challenge “Bin It 2 Win It” by delivering the first single stream recycling dumpster to Chase Elementary. The dumpster, supplied by Rumpke, will be used to collect recyclable materials generated by the school and nearby community. Students rallied support by chanting the tagline for the contest, “Don’t throw it away. Make today a Sunny day.” Vice Mayor Qualls alongside Billy Cyr, CEO of SDBC, and Ellen Iobst, Chief Sustainability Officer, gave encouraging remarks during the kick-off. Since then, a seventh school has signed up for the challenge. The seven participating schools are Covedale Elementary, Mt. Healthy High School, Roger Bacon High School, St. Francis de Sales, Hughes High School, Chase Elementary, and Cheviot Elementary. The 6-month “Bin It 2 Win It” contest will challenge students to “close the loop”

Make A Difference Day 2010

Make a Difference Day is one of the nation's largest days of citizen volunteerism. Keep Cincinnati Beautiful facilitated projects across the tri-state on Saturday October 23rd. Nearly 500 volunteers participated in community cleanup and beautification events for this year’s Make A Difference Day! Volunteers worked at 24 locations, bagged 13,580 pounds of litter, collected 7,155 pounds of un-bagged trash and debris (that’s 10 tons!), pulled 135 tires out of 5 illegal dump sites, and cleaned 40 acres of public parks! Community members and corporate groups worked alongside each other to improve their neighborhoods and eliminate blight.

Field Trip to Rumpke's MRF and Landfill

KCB has a variety of free educational programs that engage students in environmental topics. Here we are with a group of high school students as they tour the Rumpke Landfill and view the MRF (Material Recovery Facility) in operation. The recycling center gives students valuable information on the natural resources used to create various products as well as knowledge of the recycling process. Teens must wear hard hats and safety glasses in order to get a first hand look at single stream recycling. Perfetti Van Melle Community Day

On September 20, nearly 40 volunteers from Perfetti Van Melle (makers of Airheads and Mentos) beautified the vacant lot at 1828 Elm Street and painted the windows on the adjacent building. The candy company contributed $3,000 to the project!! We installed a crushed brick pathway, two honey locusts, and several knockout rose bushes. Volunteers also set up sanding and staining stations for the fences we'll be using in our Vacant Lot Stabilization Program!
