Stonehenge, Washington State

Stonehenge is the first monument in the American nation to military personnel who gave their lives in World War I. The design duplicates in size and original from England’s famous Stonehenge (dated 1900–1350 B.C.) on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. When Samuel Hill, a Quaker pacifist, visited England during the 1914–18 conflict, saw Stonehenge and was told it was build for human sacrifices to pagan gods, he remarked: “After all our civilization, the flower of humanity still is being sacrificed to the god of war on fields of battle.” From that inspiration came this monument, built by Hill. On July 4, 1918 the altar stone was dedicated. The full structure was completed and dedicated May 30, 1929. Today the sacrifice legend is generally discredited. Current belief is that Stonehenge was a device used by stone-age astronomers to measure time and mark seasons of the year by observing positions of the sun and moon.

Maryhill Museum of Art, Washington State

Maryhill Museum was originally planned as a private residence for pacific Northwest entrepreneur Sam Hill, who in 1907 purchased over 5000 acres of land along the Columbia River to start an agricultural community. He named his new ranchlands project after his daughter, Mary, and began construction in 1914. Throughout this period, Hill's business ventures took him all over the world. During these travels, he developed lasting friendships with famed avant-garde dancer Loie Fuller, Queen Marie of Romania and San Francisco sugar heiress Alma de Bretteville Spreckels. When the planned farm community didn't materialize, Loie Fuller convinced Hill to convert his unfinished house into an art museum. The museum was dedicated in 1926 by Queen Marie of Romania and due to the commited efforts of Alma de Bretteville Spreckels, Maryhill Museum opened to the public on May 13, 1940, the anniversary of Hill's birth.

The Oregon Garden

The Oregon Garden is something to be experienced rather than just viewed. Along with the bountiful colors of spring and summer blooms, the scents and feel of a leaf or flower can be intoxicating to plant enthusiasts. But it also can be a place to relax and unwind within nature's beauty. It is the only location in Oregon where visitors can experience more than 20 natural gardens in one place. There's even a Children's Garden where kids can play and learn. The variety of plants, sculptures and water features give visitors an opportunity not only to see and smell, but also to touch, listen and taste the garden's goodness.

When I realized Julianne Johnson would come to school and sing in the cafeteria I said: “Too good to be true.” However, it happened to be true. And it was not too good. It was incredibly good!Julianne is not just a vocalist, but an entertainer who has the ability to connect with an audience, no matter how large, in a personal manner. From jazz, to R & B, Motown to Broadway, Gospel to Blues, Julianne has the education, skill and experience to display with professionalism each musical style. She is a star but she does not show even a single trace of megalomania. Talking to her I felt we have known each other for ages. I am proud and it is an honor for me to have one of her CDs “Inspired” in my collection.

The Hickory Tree Restaurant

In 1993, the Holzwarth's renovated the school's kitchen, purchased a smoker and founded the Hickory Tree Catering Service. Three years later, the couple opened the Hickory Tree Restaurant in the school building and began serving smoked meats and tasty home-made side dishes buffet-style three days a week. Inside the restaurant, the walls are filled with old school memorabilia, with much of it being donated from patrons all over the US. Customers dine in the original gym, and upstairs the classrooms have been decorated using themes such as History, Library, Music, and Science rooms.

Kansas Underground Salt Museum

It's an experience truly unlike any other! After a 70-second descent straight down on a double-decker elevator, the doors open and you're 650 feet under the Kansas prairie surrounded by salt deposits formed 275 million years ago. This exotic subterranean world is as comfortable as it is fascinating - always 20 degrees C with 45% relative humidity.The historical, geological, and cultural story of salt comes to life with dramatic displays and a tram ride through the maze of chambers created by years of mining. This is still a working salt mine.

Cirque du soleil

Since March 4, the world famous Cirque du soleil has been presenting one of its performances in Portland, "Corteo". Corteo, which means "cortege", is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth. The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music, by turns lyrical and playful, carries Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.

R.E.A.C.H

Students participate in Project R.E.A.C.H. (Respecting our Ethnic and Cultural Heritage). This ongoing tradition is a multifaceted learning experience that includes: a research paper with citations and an informational speech. The highlight is the cultural, ethnic or family history displays created by students, which are featured at the annual Project R.E.A.C.H. Night. In keeping with the theme of celebrating the diversity in the school and community, students are researching topics that focus on their family background. The visual displays are evaluated by four criteria: content, organization, conventions and visual quality. Students use large size, tri-fold display boards, 48 in. x 36 in.

Rod Hill, making pancakes at "Robert Gray"

Who is Rod Hill? His career has taken him from the hurricane seasons of south Texas to the snows of Michigan, the tornado season of the Ohio valley & since 1992 the hard to predict weather of the Pacific Northwest. Growing up in Missouri,Rod holds a Bachelors degree in Radio/Television Speech Communications from the University of Missouri. While forecasting in Texas, Rod earned his Certificate of Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University and later was certified by both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. For the past five years Rod has served on the NWA’s Broadcast Certification Committee. Since moving to Portland,Rod has received six consecutive Emmy nominations and was awarded the prestigious Emmy award for best meteorologist in 1999 & 2002. Rod’s work has also been recognized by the Associated Press, being named best meteorologist in the state of Oregon for the years 2000 & 2003.

Lewis And Clark Interpretive Center

Perched on a cliff overlooking the mouth of the Columbia River, the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center contains exhibits offering an overview of the Corps of Discovery's entire journey from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean. Primary focus of the exhibits is on the expedition's discoveries and experiences along the Columbia River, with special attention given to the Corps' arrival at the mouth of the Columbia and the overland journey to the Pacific Ocean.

Cape Disappointment

Cape Disappointment State Park (formerly Fort Canby State Park) is a 1,882-acre camping park on the Long Beach Peninsula, fronted by the Pacific Ocean. The park offers 27 miles of ocean beach, two lighthouses, an interpretive center and hiking trails. Visitors enjoy beachcombing and exploring the area's rich natural and cultural history.

Wreck of the Peter Iredale

The 3 a.m. hour of October 25, 1906 was dark, windy and cold. The 275 foot long Liverpool sailing ship was struggling toward the mouth of the Columbia River on its way to Portland, Oregon. But its 25 crew and 2 stowaways weren't destined to make it there. Heavy mists obscurred the beacons of the light houses and the Columbia River light ship. Soon the fated ship ran aground, and soon it broke off its top spars. Then heavy rain squalls and a fresh westerly gale pushed it ashore, where it lies to this day, now a playground of Oregon beachcombers and children. Luckily, it is not a gloomy ship of ghosts and terror---everyone was rescued by a life-saving crew from Hammond, and later congenially housed by the men at nearby Ft. Stevens.

Fort Clatsop

The Corps of Discovery remained at Fort Clatsop from December 7, 1805, until March 23, 1806. During that time, Clatsop and Chinook Indians, whom Clark described as close bargainers, came to the fort almost daily to visit the trade. The capitains wrote often in their journals of these tribes' appearance, habits, living conditions, lodges, and abilities as hunters and fishermen.

Lewis And Clark National Historical Park

Lewis and Clark National Historical Park consists of 12 individual areas that mark the success of the key parts of the Corps of Discovery's mission - arriving safely at the Pacific, maintaining friendly relationships with local Indian tribes, preparing maps and revising journals that recorded their experiences and discoveries, and preparing for the trip home. Taken together, all sites embody stories of hardship and danger, of collaboration and adaptation, and of exploration and discovery.

We, the teachers, had a St. Valentine workshop - building sculptures with an element of a heart. I had no inspiration, so my sculpture is easily recognisable. Yet, there IS a heart element in it. Have you seen such plates? Perhaps, you're curious what the material is. It's very soft, with no smell and is called crayola.

Personal Culture Collage

Students are creating a personal culture collage.It's the opening activity for Project REACH(Respecting our Ethnic And Cultural Heritage) & is designed to get their thinking about their own & their families' personal background. This creative activity requires to follow a specific format. Each personal culture collage consists of 4 main areas:a mosaic self-portrait made from small colored pieces cut out from magazines(somewhat abstract, but color & style of hair, shape & color of eyes, etc.should be accurate); a section focused on the ethnic background(includes maps & flags, culture-specific foods, words, symbols, areas of origin); a section devoted to family & traditions(includes visual representations of family members, traditions, pets, favorite vacation destinations); & a section that displays everyone's personal culture.This can include hobbies, music, favourite foods, friends, types of clothes, sports, quotes that a student finds meaningful.

Historical Fiction Book Project

Students are writing and illustrating a historical fiction story, which is completed in a bound book form. Each student is writing a 3-page story centered on a famous event from American history between the years 1600-1960s. They create a character that was present and involved in a meaningful way in this event. Students found this to be an enjoyable and creative time in class, with the sharing of their completed books (28 pages) as one of the highlights of the year.

In the Blueback Submarine...

You've seen one on TV,or maybe at the movies.But it's rare opportunity to climb aboard a real submarine and glimpse what life was like for those who worked,ate,and slept leagues under the see,for months at a time.It's an experience you won't forget! That's not the Yellow submarine from the famous Beatles's song. That's USS Blueback, a retired U.S. Navy submarine,in official operation for 31 years. At its launch in 1959,it was one of the most modern fast-attack submarines in the Navy,and it was the last non nuclear-powered,fast-attack submarine ever built.

"Teach Like Your Hair's On Fire" or: My unforgettable meeting with Rafe Esquith

Esquith is the only public school teacher to be honored by both Oprah Winfrey and Dalai Lama; he is the only school teacher ever to receive the president's National Medal of the Arts. For the past 25 years, Esquith has taught fifth graders at Hobart Elementary in central Los Angeles. Like most progressive educators, Esquith is outraged by the tyranny of testing, the scripting of teaching under 'No Child Left Behind' and the overwhelming bureaucratization of the education industry. Still, he's done wonders with the basic curriculum — developing a hands-on arts program, a money-management curriculum and a sports-based statistics unit. Esquith and his Hobart Shakespeareans are world famous for the rock opera they create every year. Throughout each school day, Esquith teaches life skills: how to think about problems, how to plan a strategy to solve them and, most important, how to work together and be nice to each other.

Learn about the cultural and natural history of the Columbia River Gorge and Wasco County. Moreover, interpreting the equipment and supplies of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, this exhibit takes you back to 1803 as Meriwether Lewis planned the epic journey.

Rose Garden

Portland's International Rose Test Garden is the oldest of 24 public rose test gardens in the USA. The five plus acre garden was established in 1917 and has a panoramic view of the "City of Roses". Thousands of roses in the garden represent more than 550 varieties for your enjoyment. Many of the best, new rose varieties are planted in the garden each year, so visitors can see what is new in the hybridizing world. Bloom time in the garden is from late May through September.

Fort Vancouver National Historic Site

Fort Vancouver was headquarters for the Hudson's Bay Company's Columbia Department, embracing present-day British Columbia, Washington,Oregon & Idaho.
