ChawanExpo - Opatija, Croatia, Septembar 2011
A Chawan (茶碗) is a bowl used for preparing and drinking matcha (powdered green tea) in the Japanese tea ceremony, introduced in the 16th century in Japan. This humble tea bowl represents the heart of the Zen philosophy, that all things in the universe are connected, created from the same material. All that exists deserves a name, and every Chawan becomes unique artwork. A select group of master ceramists all over the world are making Chawan. To produce a Chawan you do not have to be Japanese, Zen Buddhism started 6000 years ago in India and is universal. You can only make a Chawan if your soul is in it, that’s the only criteria for all Chawan makers in the world.
The Chawan that appear in this unique international exhibition reflect the soul and the power of Zen. Individual perfection in imperfection as it should be; in nature and in man, humble, simple and ...imperfect, of course.
