Ginger and I tool a long weekend trip to Holiday COE Campground on West Point Lake. We had planned on being there Sat and Sun night but she got off work in time to head over Fri night. We arrived after dark so did not get boat launched until Sat. After launching boat, we headed to Pine Mountain GA to walk around the antique shops. Sunday was spent putzing around the lake and doing a little fishing. For Sun supper, we did a dutch over pizza casserole using a recipe we found on internet. It came out great and was even good for Mon lunch. Weather Mon was supposed to be rain and windy so we loaded up boat and stopped by antique store in Woodbury to shop around a little. After getting home, I had to wash the boat because it was full of red mud!

Spice Rack

Another MH project was to build/install a spice rack over the galley counter. I had some 3/4“ oak I could use but wanted to use 1/2” wood for the spice rack. So, this project only cost me $400 for a thickness/planer. Always try to plan projects that require buying new tools :) . I've needed a thickness/planner several times in past so it will come in handy for future projects. I created plans for the spice rack using a free CAD program called AllyCad 2010. They have a more powerful commercial version. Having a good set of plans really helped in building the spice rack. I'm using same software to draw up a little cabinet to house the DVD player to go along with new LCD TV I mounted. I made the bottom shelf of spice rack a little large to hold bigger bottles. We bought the little rail & spindles from Home Depot.

LCD TV Mod

Right before we bought the Motor Home TV stations broadcasting converted from analog to digital so the TV that came in MH was useless except for watching DVD movies. We opted not to use a converter box because we knew we eventually wanted to change it out to a LCD flat panel TV. That was the project this weekend! The TV in the MH was very small - 15“ maybe and we wanted to stay with a smaller LCD. We checked out 19” and 22“ and the 22” just didn't seem that much larger for the extra $$$ it cost. So, we went with a 19“. The original plan was to cut the point off the TV cabinet and mount flat panel to a new door. Then, use the cabinet for DVD player and storage of DVDs. We ended up scrapping that idea and took the whole TV cabinet down. I attached a new piece of oak to the side of small cabinet that was beside TV cabinet and through bolted a full motion arm to it. All pictures were taken with my phone's camera so they aren't that great.

First trip to Skidaway Island State Park near Savannah. We met Katie & Taylor on I-16 at Statesboro exist and they followed us on to Savannah. We arrived after dark and finding our way through the park in the dark was a bit of a challange. We finally settled on site #73 and were able to get positioned level in site without using any leveling blocks. Saturday we took Taylor's Jeep into Savannah and walked around the shops on River Street. We ate lunch at a place called Dockside and planned to eat supper at The Pirates House. We ended up eating to big a lunch and decided to skip the Pirates House. We went back to campground and brought back a pizza for a late night supper. Sunday, my cousin and family came out for a big “brunch” around 11:00am. We cleaned up and headed out by 1:00pm. Skidaway Island SP is very nice. We probably saw the most diverse set of camping rigs including an A-Liner, 2 Vanagons, a VW Rialta, and 2 or 3 class B's.

Heart of Georgia 2009

GSU Southern Pride was the exhibition band for the Heart of Georgia High School band competition in Warner Robins GA on 10/24/09. Unfortunately, due to being homecoming week and ACT testing, Lamar County HS did not participate. We still rode down late Saturday afternoon to catch Southern Pride's performance. The HS bands and other spectaturs seem to really enjoy the show! It was fun seeing them perform before a stadium of folks there to watch marching bands...they seem to have a different appreciation than the typical football game crowd.

Took our “new to us” class C motorhome down to Georgia Southern for Katie's first ever college football game in a marching band. She and her boyfriend Taylor are freshman members of Georgia Southern University's Southern Pride marching band. We parked at the RAC (Recreation Activity Center) to tailgate and feed Katie, Taylor and 2 of their new Saxophone friends. After they left for pre-game warmup we walked over to Paulson Stadium to hang out with some friends before heading into the stadium. The band breaks into 3 groups and wanders around the tailgating area playing for the fans. The game was a nail biter with GSU squeaking out a winning field goal with under 2 minutes to play. We (and one other RV) stayed the night at RAC. Sunday, we took kids to Zaxby's for lunch and headed home. Looking forward to 4 more home games!!!

Our 3rd RV. a 2006 Gulf Stream Yellowstone 6316...5th if you count the 2 family tents we had before the popup camper. With the life changes of Katie going to college and Sammy becoming a Jr in High School, a Class C motorhome seemed to fit our RV lifestyle better. If just Ginger and I are headed out to lake, we can tow boat. For going to the Georgia Southern games to watch Katie in the band, a motorhome with built-in generator seemed a better fit also. If just Ginger and I camp at a state park, we can tow the New Beetle and have a sporty convertable to sightsee in.

Bike Trailer

Where we vacation at Hilton Head Island or taking camper to beach, it is usually a short bike ride to the beach. About 10 years ago, we bought a bike cart for carrying kids and used it to haul our chairs, cooler, etc. to the beach. The canvas had dry rotted and some of the framing bent/broke so I decided to rebuild the cart. My original plan was a small plywood box and paint it with some beach scenes. After building a prototype box, I decided that it would be much too heavy. So, I moved on to Plan B - built a lightweight frame using 3/4“ electrical conduit and use some type of cloth/canvas for panels. I ended up using material from an old boat cover and putting grommets around the edge to lace it to the frame. It seems to be sturdy and we'll see how it work when we go to Hilton Head end of June.

West Point 20090501

Sammy wanted to take some friends to lake for his birthday which was at end of March. We kept waiting for warm weather and an available weekend. Although it was still a little cool and the kid's had a band event on Fri night, we decided to go on weekend of 5/1/2009. We headed over early Sat with plans to stay until after supper on Sun. I had to pay for 3 nights camping for the 1 night! But, it was his 16th birthday! We had a good time even though some rain blew in both Sat and Sun evening. We did leave a little early because of weather on Sun.

Katie had been wanting to bring several friends out on boat before school started back. Based on number she wanted to bring, we decided to make it a weekend camping trip and take turns boating. So, on Fri, 8/25/08, Katie and six of her friends, Sammy and a friend, Ginger, me and Katie's boyfriend's mom & step-dad setup camp at Holiday Campground on West Point Lake. Fri was busy pitching tents, unloading, etc. so we didn't launch boat. Sat after a huge breakfast we hit the water. First up was Katie's crew of 7, me driving boat and Taylor's step-dad on spotting duty. After several hours of non-stop tubing, the older teens went in and Ginger and I took out Sammy and his friend Jackson. The tubed for about an hour before we headed in to cook burgers, hotdogs and all the trimmings. I grilled 32 burgers and 24 hotdogs! Teenagers eat a LOT. After our late lunch/early supper settled we did another round of tubing. After a Sun morning breakfast of cereal, we broke camp and got everyth

Vacation 2008

For Vacation 2008 we took the camper to another Florida State Park, Topsail Hill near Destin Beach. This park used to be a private RV resort before being donated to the state so its amenities are top notch. The campground was about 1/2 mile from beach with a nice paved bike/walking path leading the way. The campground itself was very nice with concrete pads, landscaped sites, pool and shuffleboard courts.

Sammy Eagle

It was time for Sammy to do his Boy Scout Eagle Project. His original idea was to do some renovation of a courtyard at the High School outside the lunch room. Once tennis season kicked in though he realized there was no place for students to sit during practice or spectators to sit during a match. So, he came up with idea of some small benches along the courts. It just happened that the school Superintendant came near the end of one of their matches and he asked him about the project. After getting the OK, we searched the web for a decent plan that would be sturdy and able to be built by scouts with their limited building experience. We found 3 or 4 plans that met the criteria and took ideas from each and put together the plan used. Sammy planned a workday on weekday evening to assemble the benches. We got everything done except bolting on the 4X4 post legs. So, he and I did that at home over two evening. Then, he had another workday on a Sat morning to install the benches.

Stone Mtn Christmas 2007

For Thanksgiving trip this year we went to Stone Mountan and took in their Christmas activities. They had 2 singing/dancing shows, a short comedy version of A Christmas Carol, lots of lights and other decorations, and a Christmas parade. We also took a ride to the top of the mountain to see fall colors from up high.

We camped at Ga Veterans State Park in Cordele GA in order to go to a Civil War re-enactment at nearby Andersonville. We had never been to a re-enactment. It was really cool with black powder cannons going off, soldiers running around, etc. The re-enactment is not held at the confederate prison/national cemetary site so we left the campground early headed home and stopped by the prison site and cemetary to tour them. Ginger and I had both been as kids. They have a museum for POWs and it is very moving to go through.

Decided to spend day somewhere different so we headed up to Lake Allatoona north of Atlanta. We had good afternoon but boy that lake is busy! The wakes were so bad the kids didn't really enjoy tubing. We did see folks jumping from a cliff which was pretty neat.

We took a trip to Huntsville, AL to the US Space and Rocket Center (USSRC). We stayed in the RV Park at the USSRC and it was very nice. It is a small 27 site campground with full hookups. The sites are spacious and in a somewhat wooded area about 1/4 mile from the USSRC. There is a nice walking path to get to the museum from the campground. The rates were very reasonable, only $15 per night. I would recommend calling ahead at least 2 weeks because the campground stays pretty full. If you're not visiting the USSRC though, there isn't much to do at the campground. We left after work on Friday afternoon with plans on driving to Anniston, AL and stopping somewhere for the night. When we arrived in Anniston, it was still pretty early because we had made good time and the time zone change. So, on to Gadsden we went. We stopped at a Super Walmart in Gadsden around 10:30pm for the night. In RVs, overnighting at a Walmart is often referred to as "Wallydocking" - a play on the words Walmart and

Dry Camping at The Property - November 11, 2005

The parents of one of my son's best friends (Patrick) has about 75 acres of undeveloped wooded property in nearby Upson County. Ron (the father) has been working on the property for the last few years clearing some of the property to use for "layed back" relaxing. So, we decided to take our boys there for a weekend of dry camping. We also invited our friends Mambajack and his son from the Boating ABC board to come down in their camper. The plan was to relax, let the boys play, shoot skeet, pitch horseshoes, play in the creek and just generally have a good time. We refer to the property simply as "The Property". This would be the first time I'd ever dry camped in our fifth wheel and wasn't sure how well it would go. The weather seemed to be right...no where near hot enough to need A/C and not so cold as to need to run the furnace much. I only have a single 12V deep cycle battery so I didn't think we could run very long on it. The good news is Mambajack has a Honda 3000watt generator so

Indian Springs State Park Camping with New Fifth Wheel - July 08, 2005

This was the first trip in our new 2005 Pigrim 276BH Fifth Wheel. We had intended to take the camper and boat to West Point but forcast was calling for rain and more rain. So, we decided to make a close to home trip to Indian Springs SP for our maiden voyage. Saturday morning, I was thinking we made the wrong decision because skies were clear. But, clouds rolled in during early afternoon and the bottom dropped out...which was OK because we spent time in the camper checking out the DVD player and surround system. All in all, we had a great time and really enjoyed the new 5'er. We bought it hoping to take kids on some longer, extended trips to see places like Ashville NC, Williamsburg VA, Washington DC, etc. I think we'll all enjoy just that!

Lake Nottely - July14, 2005

Once again, we took a trip up to North Georgia to stay a weekend at the cabin of Ginger's sister's husband's brother (Whew, what a mouthfull!). We had a great time and the weather was fantastic. The kids got in lots of watersports and we spent many hours anchored out just relaxing. Someone had made a swing that hangs out over the lake so we had a blast swinging out and dropping into the water.

Townsend TN - Sep 30, 2005

Along with 5 other couples, we made an adults only trip to to Townsend TN to spend weekend. After arriving on Fri, we had a great supper of spaghetti and salad prepared by some of the other couples. Ginger and I cooked a chocolate cake and peach cobbler in our dutch ovens for dessert. We served the cake with ice cream and chocolate syrup and the cobbler with ice cream. After supper, we were all stuffed and miserable. On Sat, we got to the purpose of the trip...a day hike up Alum Cave Bluff trail to the top of Mt Leconte. Mt Leconte is the 3rd highest peak in the Smokey Mtns and has a lodge on top that is only accessable via hiking trails. At 5.1 miles, the Alum Cave Bluff trail is the shortest of the 3 trails to Mt Leconte but is also the steepest climbing over 2,600 ft. The hike offers some great scenic views! The trail was fairly difficult for us amateur non-hikers but we all made it. We left the trailhead at 9:55am and arrived at the lodge around 2:00pm. We took a 45 minute break

This was our 2nd annual grown-up getaway to Lake Lanier with TJ & Shari. They pulled their camper on up around lunch time and we pulled up boat after Ginger got off work around 5:30. We stayed at Chestnut Ridge Campground. It was another fun, relaxing trip. We decided not to do any cooking but to eat at places on the lake for lunch and supper. We did cold & microwaveable breakfasts. Saturday morning we rode around lake and ate lunch at Dockside Grill at Holiday Marina. We then went to Cocktail Cove for a few hours. It was a little less crowded & tamer than last year - perhaps because of the cooler weather . There seemed to be more "normal" bowrider and ski boats, bigger cruisers but less go fast type boats. After Cocktail Cove, we went to Up the Creek at Starboard Marina and had supper. Back to camp and watched a movie. It rained during the night and Sunday was overcast and cool. We rode around lake for about an hour and then packed up to head home. We stopped by mall & Walmart to shop

Just the family went to West Point on Saturday before the 4th. Lake was very empty of boat traffic. Weather ended up being great after weeks of rain. There was a little debris in the lake but we didn't hit anything damaging.

In spite of hurricane Frances bearing down on Fla. and threatning bad weather for GA, we and Mambajack's family headed to Holiday COE Campground on West Point Lake for the weekend. We had just bought a "new to us" popup camper. We didn't have it in time to reserve a campsite so we had to take it over on Monday and leave it in a first-come first-serve type site. We arrived late Friday with the boat in tow. Mambajack and crew came in a little later. Since we arrived so late on Friday, we didn't launch boats until Sat morning. So, we sat around in camper (with A/C on...YES). The kids played games while the grown-ups talked. Saturday morning, we cooked bacon and eggs for breakfast. After cleanup, we discovered that the shower house directly across from the campsite had plumbing problems. The lines were full of air. This is the newest and nicest showerhouse at the campground. For the last two years, we had wanted to camp near it...and now it was broken! Anyway, we got ready and launched bo

After some weekend plans changed, we decided to do a one night campout at West Point Lake. We headed over around lunch time on Saturday with no reservations - hoping we could get a good site this early in the season. We did get a nice site on the water but with the lake a little low, it was too shallow a cove to tie boat up over night. So, we boated for a while on Saturday, reloaded boat on trailer and keep it in campsite overnight. We cooked meatloaf and peach cobbler in dutch ovens for supper. Next morning we did pancakes and bacon. Boated a little more Sunday afternoon and got home around 7:00pm Sunday.

I took 1/2 day off on this Monday and we took the kids and a few friends to Jackson Lake for the afternoon. Sammy took his friend Jackson and his brother Pippen and Kaite took her friend Jessie. The weather was great and we almost had the lake to ourselves. We swam a little, skied a little, tubed a lot, and then did it all again. We were on the water for a solid 6 hours.

On July 21, 2003, we took my sister, her husband and their 3yr old grandson to Jackson Lake. It was their first time boating with us and they had lots of fun. Their grandson (Ian) wasn't scared of the boating or tubing at all.

We stayed at Ginger's sister's in-laws cabin on Lake Nottely July 10 to Jul 13, 2003. It was a lot of fun and our kids got to spend a lot of time with their cousins. We boated, tubed and skiied all weekend. When we arrived Thur, it was a little rainy but we still got to cruise around the lake in their pontoon. The weather was great on Fri, Sat and Sun. Lake Nottely was very nice with little boat traffic. The North Georgia mountain's in the backdrop were great. This would make a good fall boating trip!

In early June 2003, we went camping at Mistletoe State Park on Lake Clark Hill near Augusta, Ga. It rained a fair amount but we stayed pretty dry. The rain did shorten our boating time though.
