Saturday morning, looking out to the fjord
This is Lis and Nil's first house, across the little street behind their new house. They still own it, and rent out 3 separate flats in it. Nil's father built it when he moved to Bergen, I think around 1930 or so?
About 12 years ago they built this new house - this is the back side of it. Steve and I stayed in the guest apartment - the entrance is to the left of Nil's car. It was very nice!
Red carpet welcome outside their door!
After breakfast we all drove into the city (about 10 minutes). I took a few pics out the car window.
The streets along the mountain side are so steep that we couldn't make this turn without backing up and inching forward again several times! Most people that live along the slopes right near the downtown ride bikes, it's easy to see why!!
We made it!
We walked around a little after we parked the car.
Bryggen (harbor area)
Bryggen
Narrow walkway to an art gallery that Lis and Nils wanted us to see - they knew the artist.
Inside the gallery - they wanted us to pick out print!
This is the one we chose - the fish are the "people"! There is a mermaid in the fish tank at the left!
Nils, purchasing the print from the artist's daughter
Outside the gallery which is housed in a building that is on the UNESO World Heritage list
Now I can't remember how old the building was, but very old!!
Steve and Nils
Next door was a shop that sold Hardanger linens - I wish now that I had bought a little piece!
Mother, Judi and Barbara - here is that same 3 faced dude, still over the arch of a shop along the Bryggen!
Love this periwinkle blue door, especially the rounded top
Walking along a street
Roofs of Bergen
Flower shop!
Huldra! The very clever name of this beauty salon - reminded me of seeing the 'huldra' at the Kjosfossen waterfall when we took the train up the mountain in our '99 trip! ( I googled an explanation - "The Huldra is a mysterious and tricky creature, and is considered to be a part of the troll family. She is fair-haired and beautiful, and had it not been for her cow's tail, she would look like an ordinary girl if not exceptionally beautiful. Occasionally she tries to hide her tail in order to lure young human men into marrying her. Once the man agrees to the marriage, and they are married in a church, the hulder's tail falls off, but the true nature of the troll remains in the huldra. If the man doesn't treat her well, she will turn incredibly ugly, and the man will suffer and regret being tricked by a hulder throughout his marriage. So men, watch out! You never know when the next beautiful woman you see is actually a hulder in disguise.")
Here we are at Floibanen entrance, to take the train up to the top for the view of Bergen
It was really quite a view!
After we came back down we walked along the harbor, here in a shop we bought some lefse. It came already buttered and sugared!
Lots of outdoor booths selling food and such
Then we drove out of Bergen along another fjord to this beautiful old hotel called Solstrand, and had lunch there.
The view from the dining room
And ever on the lookout for birds, here is one that caught my eye! I found out it is a "Great Tit"
That evening Nils made "Double Marshall's" (his words!!) for Steve and himself!
Then later on Lis made pancakes for our supper, they were delicious! It was a wonderful Saturday in Bergen.
