March for Life 2012

The annual March for Life is the most under-reported event in the nation. This is my sixth year redressing the lack of MSM coverage with an online photo journal. If a picture says a thousand words, then people can see the truth about Pro-Lifers here: a dazzlingly diverse movement filled with youth, vitality and joy. I'm not a professional photographer. My method is to stand still and take pictures of the crowd streaming by. I took 893 pictures, then cut back to the 227 you see here. My hope is that they tell a story. Do not believe the official crowd estimates. I stood and took pictures for 2 1/2 hours. You can see the width of the street and catch a sense of the river of humanity quickly passing by. That is not tens of thousands of people, but hundreds of thousands of people from all over the country.

March for Life 2011

Absolutely the most under-reported national event each year! Where else could a few hundred thousand young people - 80% under 25 - gather in the freezing cold for a political event only to have the Mainstream Media studiously ignore them? As a former radical leftist/abortion rights activist, I attended scores of demonstrations in Washington, DC. Now, having undergone a change of heart, I'm grateful for the opportunity to join in an event based on affirming the value of human life. For five years since I returned to Virginia, I've chronicled the true March for Life by creating a photo-journal. This year, because of Maddy's appearance at the Teen Rally and Mass - involving a lot of behind the scenes activity and little sleep - I was unable to take pictures myself. Lose the Training Wheels Workshop 2010

Thanks to Fairfax Parks and Rec for bringing Lose the Training Wheels to northern Virginia! Jonny, Jesse, Daniel and Justin took the week-long course over Spring Break. Jonny lost his training wheels on Wednesday - his 18th birthday. Daniel and Justin came close to riding independently, but will need some follow up at home. We got the special helper handle and will be keeping up with practicing at home. Jesse isn't quite as enthused, but we'll do our best to get him there too. Thanks to Daddy for driving 90 minutes each way - and for taking so many pictures. I've included a lot so you can see how it works and how the boys progressed during the week. Tripp wrote the comments.

11/5 March on Washington - Michele Bachmann's Tea Party

On October 30, 2009, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann called for Americans concerned with the 2000+ page Pelosicare bill being ramrodded through the House to make an Emergency House Call on their elected representatives. Six days later, thousands of citizens form across the country dropped everything to be there. This is just a small part of the story, offered as an alternative to whatever is fed to Americans by the Tired Old Media (Uncle TOM).

9/12 March on Washington DC

As a 60s/70s radical leftist, I organized many of the antiwar marches - even got teargassed a time or two. About the only mark I carry from those days is that I'm still questioning authority. But today that makes me a conservative. I brought my camera to DC to tell the REAL story of the 9/12 March. Madame Pelosi and the state-run media call us "Astroturf" and "Nazis" and "an angry mob." Following Alinsky, they'd like to freeze us in these false images and thereby marginalize us. But we are next-door neighbors. family and friends. If we have become anti-Obama it's because we are profoundly pro-America and his eight months in office have awakened us to the reality that he and his political comrades have charted a path to destruction. While we would love to be home enjoying our families and continuing productive lives, we know it's up to us to band together to make our voices heard. The media said there would be "tens of thousands" of us. Instead there were 2 million. God bless America!

We mothers carry so many burdens - and with little recognition or reward: no paycheck, performance reviews, report cards, medals, or trophies. But that's the beauty of our work: so challenging and yet so spiritually rewarding. It's just between us and God. That connection seems to come in the quiet moments with our children, when we feel the trust God has placed in us to do our best by the children He has placed in our care. Washington DC Tea Party

The Washington, DC Tea Party was held in Lafayette Square, directly north of the White House. Despite the cold and rain, 2000 citizens gathered for one of over a thousand Tea Parties nationwide today. As a former radical leftist who organized and participated in every DC/Pentagon antiwar protest 1968-1972, I have never seen such a gathering of polite and friendly people - who despite media misrepresentation met simply to exercise their freedom of speech and a proud American history of political protest. The Tea Party concept is based on the 1773 Boston Tea party, in which American patriots protested overtaxation by Britain. And we know where that led . . . .

March for Life 2009

The annual March for Life is the most under-reported event in the nation. This is my fourth year redressing the lack of Dinosaur Media coverage with an online photo journal. If a picture says a thousand words, then people can see the truth about Pro-Lifers here: a dazzlingly diverse movement filled with youth, vitality and joy. Following 2007 and 2008, when marchers each year numbered 200,000, we wondered what would happen in 2009, two days following the inauguration of the most proudly pro-abortion president in this sad episode of our nation's history. This year there were 300,000! I stood on a column in front of the Department of Labor for 2 1/2 hours shooting over 700 pictures. I have cut them to 477 - preserving such a large number for the sake of documentation and so that marchers can find their groups. They are in the exact order in which they were shot - except for the little surprise at the end, which I took on the Mall during the speakers before the March began. Enjoy!

McCain/Palin Fairfax rally 9/10/08

What a wonderful time we had! And a big thanks to the Fairfax School Board, which voted in emergency session not to allow the McCain campaign to hold their rally as scheduled at Fairfax High School - though Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have had events at high schools throughout their campaign. But what a blessing it turned out to be that the venue was changed, as 23,000 people showed up - energized, excited, and elated as the campaign has picked up steam. Maddy, her friend JC and I got up early to find our way there. With the help of a state trooper who rode side-by-side with us to give us directions - just like a movie - we found our way to Van Dyck Park, where someone grabbed us to put us in the VIP section - better than a press pass!

Boston

In June I spent four days in Boston on assignment covering the Constitutional Convention's vote on whether to allow the people of Massachusetts an opportunity to vote on an amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman - as opposed to the current law set in 2003 by the state Supreme Court allowing marriage between same-sex couples. It was my first trip to Boston, so I took pictures of other sights along the way.

Our Little Extras: Moms Celebrate Down syndrome!

Oh, and did I mention an extra chromosome? The one on the 21st pair that inspires so much fear in parents-to-be. I suppose at one time all of us were fearful about Down syndrome. But take a look at our faces. Who knew how much joy lay ahead? Having a child with Down syndrome has helped me see there’s infinitely more to life than intelligence, beauty and “perfection.” Each of us moms has received a gift we never would have thought to ask for, bringing lessons we never knew we needed to learn. The greatest surprise is this: Our lives with our children have been less about us helping them reach their potential than about them helping us reach ours. Kid Friendly Art

One simple way to enrich the lives of your children is to bring art into your home. You don't have to know much to get started - I didn't! - but the key for moms is to see things through a child's eyes. Kids are so responsive to pictures! Good art can lead to enriched language experiences (see captions) and can stimulate critical thinking skills. Art can encourage and inspire your children if you will bring it within their sphere. Keep in mind that they are much shorter than you, so be sure not to hang pictures too high - and provide some at their level too. So what if you don't see it in Architectural Digest? A family's home should be less about decorating perfection and more about nurturing and encouraging and inspiring the souls inside. To show how I've used art at home, I simply took a walk through my house to share what I've collected over 37 years of mothering - with my thoughts on each. Keep in mind that like every mother, I started from scratch.

Soulforce at Patrick Henry College

In their response to Soulforce's visit today, Patrick Henry College chose the path of least resistance. Having researched the history of Soulforce's visits to other Christian campuses, I believe that was a wise decision. In spite of their claim to want to dialogue, Soulforce comes to proselytize - something they would never tolerate from the Christians they're stalking. When a college invokes its private property rights, Soulforce sends a couple members to trespass and be arrested - a symbolic act supposedly reminiscent of the Civil Rights movement. But we are not talking of people being denied seats at a lunch counter because of the color of their skin. We're talking about a group of people (Soulforce) who cannot tolerate the beliefs of others. A trivialization of what the Civil Rights movement was all about. I covered this as an alternative to what we will probably see in local media (which here includes the Washington Post) tomorrow.

Japanese Fairy Tales

VSA Arts of Virginia in Loudoun County was created to "celebrate the creative power in people with disabilities." This year's original theater production (written by Alice Power with music by John Krumich), Japanese Fairy Tales, consisted of two traditional stories: "Urashima Taro" and "Sima Who Wore the Big Hat." Our son Jonny, who is 14 and has Down syndrome, marked his fourth year in VSA productions with the lead role in the first tale. His adopted brothers Jesse (11), Daniel (10), and Justin(6), who also have Down syndrome had their theatrical debut in the show as well. These pictures are not my finest work :). Tripp had bought me a new telephoto lens for Christmas and I used it to work without a flash, but I really needed to have the camera mounted on a tripod for the best results. March for Life 2007

As a former radical leftist, I attended many demonstrations in Washington, DC. Now having attended the March for Life two years in a row, I'm amazed at how under-reported the March for Life is - and all too aware of how that under-reporting contributes to the rampant stereotyping of pro-lifers as middle-aged white males. I actually saw very few of those today! What I saw were hundreds of thousands of people willing to brave the cold (DC had its first snow of the winter the night before) to affirm that a baby in the womb is not property to be destroyed, but a person that those committed to human rights must defend. March for Life 2006

I left Washington DC in 1972 after countless demonstrations against the war in Vietnam and for abortion rights. After 30 years in California, I returned with my entire family - husband, 12 children, 2 sons-in-law, and eight grandchildren - all except my first daughter, California natives. Now, as a conservative Christian with a profound respect for life, I am very grateful for the opportunity to cover the Annual March for Life with a photo journal - my small contribution to making up for the lack of coverage by the Washington Post. This year my daughter Maddy went with me, but she was on crutches. It was a little rainy and muddy and we didn't get around much at all.
