Alps Trip 2009 - Day 2

First day of the trip travelling from Pfaffikon to Vitznau. This day included 3 mountain passes.

Alps Trip 2009 - Day 3

The day started with a ferry ride from Gersau to Beckenried. From there I rode up to Stockalp, had a short hike to Engstlenalp and then a ride down to Innertkirchen.

Alps Trip 2009 - Day 4

This day started with a ride up to Schwartzwaldalp and a bit beyond. The intent was to continue to Grindelwald but I broke a couple of spokes to I returned to Innertkirchen, replaced the spokes, headed over Grimsel Passhohe, and stopped at a camping facility in Niederwald.

Alps Trip 2009 - Day 5

This day was a straight shot down the valley to Martigny and then on to Sembrancher. I planned to stay at a camping facility but it poured while I ate dinner so I stayed at a nice little hotel by the train station.

Alps Trip 2009 - Day 6

This day was short in distance but long in challenge. I rode up Val Ferret until the pavement ended and then continued up the dirt road until it ended. From there, it was a mountain trail over Grand Col Ferret and down into Italy where the dirt road again was present and then the paved road which I took into Entreves where I stayed at a very nice hotel.

Alps Trip 2009 - Day 7

This was another challenging day that started on the road going up Val Veny until once again the pavement ended and then the road changed to a mountain trail that took me over Col de la Seigne back to unpaved road, then paved road and eventually down to Bourg Saint Maurice where I found a nice camping facility.

Alps Trip 2009 - Day 8

This day consisted of riding from Bourg Saint Maurice to Val d'Isere and continuing over Col de l'Iseran and down to Lanslevillard where I stayed at another nice hotel. During the ride I also met Fabrice who rode with me for the final 10 kilometers or so up to Col de l'Iseran. That made the ride much more enjoyable. He is a great guy.

Alps Trip 2009 - Day 9

This day started off nicely with a ride over Col du Mont Cenis. That was the high point of the day though. The rest consisted of riding across northern Italy at the base of the Alps making my way back to where I would once again climb back over the Alps and find myself back into Switzerland. The day ended in Ivrea where I stayed in a decent hotel.

Alps Trip 2009 - Day 10

This was the second day across northern Italy stopping in Domodossola for the night at a nice hotel. The scenery and the day were more enjoyable than the previous. In particular, the ride along Lago di Orta the took me through Omegna was very picturesque.

Alps Trip 2009 - Day 11

This was another great day. It was back into the mountains going up Valle Antigorio continuing up Valle Formazza to the end of the paved road, continuing on the dirt road to Pso di San Giacomo. From the pass, it was a mountain trail down into Valle Bedretto to the road that took me down to Airolo where I stayed in a very nice hotel for the night.

Alps Trip 2009 - Day 12

This was the final day of the cycling portion of the trip. It started by going over Pso del San Gottardo and then continuing down past Hospental, Andermatt, and Schwyz, and then on to Rapperswil before finally arriving back in Pfaffikon. I originally intended to ride a few more days but the weather was turning and I decided to try and get an earlier flight home. That didn't happen but the 3 days I spent with my friends in Pfaffikon were great and I am glad the trip turned out like it did.

Alps Trip 2009 - A visit to the Rybi residence

The last day of my visit Urs Rybi and I paid a visit to his parent's house in Pfaffikon. The home is about 100 years old and has been faithfully maintained in nearly its original form. His father, mother and grandmother were a delight to meet.
