Santa Fe Baldy and fire
Today we climbed up to Santa Fe Baldy (12,600') and back for a total of approx. 14 miles in 5.5 hours. Our original route was cancelled due to the closing of the forest due to the Pecos Fire. On the way home we found out there was a fire burning near our home...

Cerro Pelado run
Today I riked 22 miles up to Cerro Pelado and back down. The course profile is shaped like an "M". Starting at 8200' at my house, climbing up to around 8500' on Cat Mesa, dropping down to around 8000', then up to 10,100' and back. My time was 5:35, lots of hiking in deep snow with bare legs, but it was warm out ;-)

2-2013 - Pino Trail, Sandias
Todat Deb and I had some business in Albuquerque, so we ran the Pino trail in the Sandias. This is a wonderful all uphill trail that starts around 6500' and tops out at 9500' and is about 4.8 miles to the top. The downhill back down is a fantastic run on smooth trails, but this time the snow was 6-8 inches deep about midway to the crest. http://www.sandiahiking.com/trailguide.html#pino

2-2013 - Rte 144 20 miler
Today's run was a fine 20 miler on a rolling Rte 144 in the Jemez Mountains on a snowmobile track. Snow was frozen in spots, mushy in others.

2-2013 Battleship Rock loop
Today Deb and I had to run some on the roads due to the snow. We ran on Rte 4 down to Battleship Rock, then hiked up Trail #137 to Jemez Campground, the road out to 4 because the bridge is out over the river, then back along 4 back to the house. All in all about 18 miles in 5 hours.

1-2013 La Luz run/hike
Today we had some business in Albuquerque, so while down there we hit our favorite trail in the Sandias, the La Luz trail. We decided to hike and run up until we hit 3PM, then turn around. We went until about 3:30 because it was such a nice day and got to within a mile of the 10,600' summit.

Hardrock Course marking - Kroger's Canteen to Governor's
Nice day today with a great crew. We marked it light as most will be here in the daylight, but made sure to put in enough flags so no one will go off course. Weather was Hardrock weather, as hail and rain fell on us up high. As you can see in the photos, basically no snow, but the scree is packed and wet, so easy to traverse.

6-2012 Santa Barbara II
We went back to the SB Divide loop this week after getting turned around by lightening last week. All sorts of critters were spotted and a great long day up high for Hardrock training.

6-2012 Santa Barbara trail
The Santa Barbara loop trail starting and finishing at the campground outside of Penasco, NM, just south of Taos. We ended up having to turn back off the divide due to lightening, but plan on returning next weekend. 3-2012 La Luz Trail/Sandias
Deb, Kevin and I traveled down to Albuquerque to deliver some artwork for Deb to a show down there, so decided to run the La Luz trail that we haven't done yet. We started at the La Luz parking area off of Rte 333, went up La Luz to the Crest Spur trail to the top of Sandia Crest at 10,680" +-, we then ran the 1 3/4 mile trail to the Tram. We then went into the restaurant (High Finance) and had some nachos and a beer to celebrate Kevin's birthday up at 10,400'. After that we took the La Luz directly back down where the top 3 miles were snowy and the final 5 miles a blast downhill run.

01-2012 Sandias Rike
KZ and I attempted to run up and back down the Crest Trail from Tunnel Springs Rd to Sandia Crest and back a total of 22 miles RT...but the deep snow turned us around at mile 6, so we got 12 with around 2000' of climb. After which, we went to Chama Brewery and had some fine beer and some grub, then went and picked up Deb at the Sunport.

Grand Canyon R2R2R
Deb and I ran the Grand Canyon double crossing (Rim to Rim to Rim) as a 10th anniversary celebration. We did the out run to the north rim in 6:57 and the return trip in 7:15, running the route South Kaibab to North Kaibab and back. We took a 45 minute break at the north rim. Starting at 4:33am (3:33 AZ time), we reached the North Rim at 11:30 and the South Rim at 7:30 (6:30). Just missing an even split...Our friend Kevin joined us along with Olga Varlamova, Larry King, Tina Ure and her boyfriend, Brian.

Deb, KZ, Gibbs, Marley and I did the 5 Peaks run, more of a hike with some downhill running. Santa Fe ski hill, Deception, Lake, Pentitente and Santa Fe Baldy. 21.5 miles in 8.5 hours.

10 years ago today, Deb and I were married on top of Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey, NH. We are thinking maybe that in 10 years we'll be back there and can renew our vows in that same place...I'd like that :-)

10-2011 First Snow, Pajarito Trail Race
Today we woke up to our first snow of the year, it's early...but we do live at 8200 feet! We then went and did an aid station at the Pajarito Trail races in Los Alamos, which was a 10K and half marathon, but which went up over 10,400 feet. Was chilly and lots of snow up high, so I heard.

2011 Bear 100
The Bear 100 mile trail race that runs from Logan, Utah to Bear Lake, Idaho. 22,000 feet of vertical, with 15,000 of it in the first 50 miles. Get to mile 51 and most of the hard work is done. I had my vertigo return at around mile 40, which necessitated stopping, but many of my friends were able to get it done.

9-2011 Battleship Rock run
This is a run we do on occasion that is around 11-12 miles. Starting at our house, we run to the East Fork trail (about 1/2 mile) and follow that trail down to Battleship Rock and back, passing through Jemez Fals campground and Macauley warm springs.

7-2011 Wheeler Peak rike
Easy run/hike up and back down the Bull of the Woods trail to the summit of Wheeler Peak and back. Wheeler Peak is the highest point in NM at 13,100'+. It got stormy on the way up, but we were sure we could summit without encountering any lightening, which we did, but we did get some pea sized hail. Good 16 mile workout in a very relaxed 5.5 hours.

5-2011 Santa Barbara Loop attempt
Deb and I attempted the 30.5 Santa Barbara loop up in Taos County. We started out wrong by staying on the West Fork trail and made it up to 11,500', where the snow was just wearing us down. We got stopped and turned around by hearing water rushing underneath the snow in front of us where the trail crossed and aren't ready to die just yet...so we went back down (through the snow again) and went up the Middle fork for a few miles to get the mileage we wanted.

Last Chance Saloon is the last aid station at the Jemez Mountain Trail runs. It was a great day and I hope we helped at least some of the runners make those last 1.9 miles to the finish.

5-2011 Caballo Caldera run
Today was supposed to be the NM MTNRNR series Caballo run, but no one showed up so we did something different, but included Caballo. We took some course markers from Tom and marked Caballo and Guaje Ridge from Caballo and followed parts of the Jemez 50 course.

5-2011 Stone lions run
The 6th NM MTNRNR series run was held Sat morning, May 7th, starting at th Ponderosa campground in Bandelier Nation Forest. The Stone Lions section was 18 miles, some of us did the Painted Caves out and back to add another 6 miles. Temps were nearing 90 degrees by midday and it was the first real hot day of the year, but a good 24 mile training run.

Sandia Crest
Deb and I went on a run up the North Crest trail in the Sandia Mountains just outside of Albuquerque, NM. We mostly hiked up, as it was all uphill for 12 miles, then ran over to the Tram House to refill water and eat. we then ran most of the way back down. We can't think of many places where you can run steadily downhill for 12 miles! It was a great day...

4-2011 Cat Mesa Ruin Rike
Ran and hiked (Riked) up to a place we had seen on Google Earth that looked interesting. Put a waypoint in my GPS, looked at a map and off we went. We were hoping it was a large Indian Ruin from the 1600's, but it turned out to be some sort of holding reservoir for water, dug out of the ground. There was still a gate valve there rusting away. Wondering why this would have been out there!

Nice training run with Deb and Gibbs today on Peggy Mesa, near Gilman, NM....we sought out an old jeep road and was pleasantly suprised. This jeep road goes on for about 50 miles north to Rte 126, which we hope to run someday.

2011 Gilman Tunnel run&hike
Toda we decided to return to the Gilman, NM area about 20 miles south on Rte 4 from our house. This is the location of the famous Gilman Tunnels that are cut through the Guadalupe box Canyon walls and is also the location where the latest movie of "3:10 to Yuma" was filmed.

012311-Red Rock training in Jemez Springs, NM.
Training run/hike we did (Deb, Gibbs and I) today in the Red Rocks area of Jemez Springs, down near the Walatowa Center of the Jemez Pueblo. Temps in the low 50's/upper 40's. Altitude is a low of 6300' to around 7500' up on the mesa. This might become our winter training grounds ;-)
