2011 Rubin Israel Experience

The Rubin Israel Experience is a very unique 10-day Israel program and exists nowhere else in North America. Similar to Taglit-Birthright, 10 young adults between the ages of 27-40, are selected to participate in this trip every year (since 2008). These are young adults (post Birthright-age) who have never been to Israel before and are being sent at no-cost thanks to private donors Ron & Pam Rubin. This “first-timers” trip is meant to provide exposure to Israel in a very meaningful way: meeting with local experts about various Israeli issues, spending quality time with everyday Israelis, soldiers, young professionals and visiting local social service projects/program which are funded through Jewish Federation’s Annual Campaign in St. Louis Sister-City region of Yokneam-Meggido. http://www.jewishagency.org/JewishAgency/English/Israel/Partnerships/Regions/Yokneam/News/2011/news-1111-Rubin2011.htm

Atlanta Birthright May 2011

Birthright missions from Atlanta is no stranger in the Partnership region of Yokneam-Megiddo, but this time, the students from Peach state who have just landed in Israel were up to quite a bubbly experience in Yokneam's Hadassim Elementary School. Numbed by a transatlantic flight and a bus ride from the airport, the young Atlanta visitors desperately needed to stretch and to have some fun. Little did they know, but the Hadassim kids were craving for the very same thing!

Annual Budget Discussions 2011

Together they learned the impact of the Federation funds for the children and families in need in Israel.

Rubin Young Leadership 2010

Ten Jewish leaders aged between 30 and 40 from St. Louis visited Israel for nine days last month on the third annual Rubin Israel Experience delegation. Funded by Ron and Pam Rubin through the Jewish Federation of St. Louis, the program is designed to do for young Jewish leaders what the Birthright (Taglit) program does for students – provide a first taste of Israel for those who have never visited. The 10-day itinerary of the Rubin Israel Experience included an opportunity to see most of the country as well as three days in Yokneam-Megiddo.

St. Louis Arches and the Jewish/Arab Galilee Circus

On a sunny July morning Yokneam-Megiddo Youth Futures kids enjoy a unique circus show, resulting of a truly multi-cultural and incredibly inspirational collaboration between Circus Harmony's St. Louis Arches and the Jewish/Arab Galilee Circus from the Galilee Foundation for Value Education. This is not the first time Partnership 2000 Yokneam-Megiddo region enjoys the juggling, balancing and flying through the air by these skillful young performers, but this time it was applauded by the Youth Futures children.

“Israel Bound” St. Louis

Twenty teenagers from St. Louis spent three weeks in Israel in June and July. Sponsored by the Jewish Federations of Atlanta and of St. Louis, Yokneam city celebrated Ethiopian culture, music and history in one of the most exciting and impressive events ever held in honor of the Ethiopian community in Israel.

Chabad Birthright 6

St. Louis Chabad WashU Birthright students, led by Rabbi Hershey Novack, had a quick visit to Daliyot Elementary school in Yokneam. It was their first activity in Israel after the landing and the passport control. The students desperately needed to stretch up after 14 hours in airplanes. Little did they know, but the Daliyot kids had just that in mind. The enthusiastic kids swept the students in Israeli folk dances and volleball game - a perfect setting for a new friendships!

Beit Rimon Ethiopian Youth Center

Approximately 200 families of immigrants from Ethiopia currently live in Yokneam. The municipality has made it top priority to connect the Ethiopian community with the general population while at the same time preserving Ethiopian tradition. The Beit Rimon Youth Center, supported by the Jewish Federations of Atlanta and St. Louis, is a means to connect with Ethiopian-Israeli youth and stimulate them to participate in municipal activities. For these youths, activities at Beit Rimon, as well as those at the municipal Youth Center, constitute an alternative to roaming the streets and being exposed to dangerous situations. The center operates four times a week from 4 to 10 p.m. The objective is to get the youths to come to the club or, alternatively, the Youth Center and to actively participate in programs provided for the city's youth.

Kol HaLev Food Distribution Center for the Needy

The Kol HaLev (With all our heart) Food Distribution Center for the Needy was established in 2002 by Yochai Yitzhari, a retired Israel Navy office, who decided to dedicate his life to Israel’s most disadvantaged residents. The Center serves about 100 families in Yokneam totaling about 600 people. “Our recipients are recommended to us by the Municipal Welfare Department,” said Yitzhari. “They include new immigrants from Ethiopia and the Former Soviet Union and Israeli families who are unable to work. We work hard to allow families to maintain their dignity and take a small charge of about $7 for groceries worth ten times that amount. Without us many of these families would suffer malnutrition.”

Carnahan-Green

Tom Green, former St. Louis Jewish Federation President and first Chair of Partnership 2000 Yokneam-Megiddo and St. Louis Steering Committee, led a VIP Jewish Federation Community Leadership Mission to Israel at the end of October. The delegation included Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan, who is a Democratic Senate candidate, and Rachel Storch, State Representative for Missouri's 64th district. According to jewishinstlouis.org, Carnahan said St. Louis' Partnership 2000 region, Yokne'am-Megiddo, "was a special highlight. The close personal friendships between the Israelis and their St. Louis Federation counterparts have made that partnership a model for how to really make a difference for Jewish immigrants from around the world. It makes me proud to be a part of such a caring and committed community."

Atlanta Community Teen Trip

Grace Lahasky recalls sitting in a room in Yokneam waiting nervously to meet a group of local Israeli teenagers. “I don’t know why I got so nervous,” recalls Lahasky, 17, from Buckhead, Atlanta, Georgia. “They came in after finishing some exams and they were just teenagers the same as us.” Lahasky was one of 34 Atlanta teenagers on the Teen Community Trip to Israel in June. They spent three days in Yokneam-Megiddo, where Israeli families hosted them, and they used their homes as a base to tour northern Israel.

United Hebrew Educators

United Hebrew congregation, St. Louis, sent a small group of educators who have never been to Israel. The group included the Director of the Early Childhood Center, Renee Kohn, and 3 teachers from the religious school - Janet Weil, Lisa Satanovsky and Kenya Madison. United Hebrew's religious school is one of the schools partnered with Yokneam Daliyot School through Kesher B'kitah. During their visit to Yokneam-Megiddo, the educators were hosted by local teachers, visited schools and Partnership programs and had a chance to interact with local students and colleagues.

WashU Chabad Birthright 5

On May 24, 2009, a few days after the arrival to Israel of a Birthright mission organized by Chabad at Washington University in St. Louis, mission members arrived for a short but meaningful visit to Yokneam. Ever since a few years ago, the visit of this mission to Yokneam has become a welcome tradition. This time the mission was hosted at Arazim Elementary School in Yokneam. The school's children were abuzz as they anxiously awaited the arrival of their guests, while practicing their English among themselves ahead of the visit.

WashU Chabad Birthright 4

On December 31, 2008 the Chabbad Birthright delegation from St. Louis visited Yokneam's Haddassim Religious Elementary School. Although it was a rainy day, the group was blessed with a one hour respite of the rain allowing for both the school children and their guests to join together in Israeli song and dance at the tune of local D.J. Riko. After an hour of invigorating fun, the visitors worked together with the 6th grade class on a mosaic project – preparing colorful wall murals of the traditional "Seven kinds of crops of the land of Israel" which later would decorate the school walls. Following lunch, the children presented a short song and skit and thanked the delegation for coming to visit their school – they can't wait for the next Birthright group to come! Acharai

"Acharai" Israeli Defence Forces Preparation - joint group of teens from Yokneam and Megiddo, which also includes Ethiopian Israeli participants. Together they prepare for their army service with additional training and supports. The “Acharai” IDF preparation course is a special program that combines physical and mental preparation for army service with youth leadership training. The course targets 11th and 12th graders. The project is now perceived as integral part of the youth department activities in Yokneam-Megiddo and operates out of local community center. "Acharai" serves as role model and something to look forward to for the younger kids.

St. Louis Baseball Equipment to Yokneam

Over one hundred pounds of first class baseball equipment was delivered to the Yokneam JCC in mid March. The equipment was donated by members and non-members of the St. Louis JCC in December, 2007. The JCC in St. Louis also found a donor who paid for official baseball tee-shirts and hats for the new Yokneam team.

Yokneam Multi-Culture Youth Center Opening

The grand opening of the "City Dance" – Yokneam Multi-Culture Youth Center was a very emotional event. Among the guests were representatives of the Jewish Federations of St. Louis and Atlanta, Rabbi Yehiel Eckstein Chair of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews , Representatives from the Israel Community Center Association, Sacta Rashi Foundation Rep's, Members of the Yokneam City council and of course, many, many young teenagers.

Kefiada Summer Camp

Heres the story of 9 amazing volunteers from St Louis and Atlanta who ventured all the way to Yokneam to spend their summer working extremely hard. Through the haze of youthful excitement, cultural diversity and zionistic idealism these 9 individuals have come together to leave a mark on the 20 Israeli co-counsellors and 320 Yokeam kids that they have worked with this past few weeks. Not least of all they have touched the heart of the JAFI staff who have had the pleasure to work with them to this end. Bnai Amoona Family Trip

Late in the afternoon on July 18th, two large tourist busses rolled into the "Mevo Carmel" JNF Park at the Elyakim junction. St. Louis Arches & Galilee Circus Performing in Yokneam

Circus Day Foundation is a non-profit organization that facilitates life skills through circus education. Its young performers, the St. Louis Arches, joined forces with their Israeli colleagues - Galilee Circus, a Jewish-Arab troupe from the Galilee Foundation that promotes cross-cultural and country-connecting social circus projects. The joint troupe of young American and Israeli actors were truly delighted to perform at St. Louis Arches sister city of Yokneam on July 16.

Noah Oberlander - From Kids To Kids

Early in 2007 the Partnership office in Yokneam received a request from Jennifer Lotsoff, P2K Coordinator in St. Louis. Jenn was looking for a "tzadaka" program for a small group of pre-bar-mitzvah boys in St. Louis. The boys, Noah Oberlander, David Iken and Aitan Groener, had set up their own nonprofit fundraising organization "From Kids to Kids" and were looking for their first project. Yokneam City Celebration

In early January this year, the Minister of Interior, Mr. Ronny Baron declared Yokneam "A City in Israel". On June 28th, the official festivities took place. Joining Mayor Simon Alfassi for this special occasion were Israeli Government Ministers, Members of the Knesset, Mayors from twin cities in Europe and other dignitaries.

Birthright Emory University - You're In The Army Now!

Emory University Birthright experience of Yokneam-Megiddo on June 4 can be best described as off the beaten tourist routine. It all started from an extravaganza regional tour on wheels by Hanan Caspi, Partnership volunteer, including a sneak peek inside the semi-secret ammunition factory of Soltam. Once the tour was over, Yotam Sofer, one of the Israeli representatives on the bus, who happens to live in the Moshava of Yokneam (rural community in Yokneam-Megiddo region), made an offer the group couldn't refuse. The next stop was hands on activity with "Follow Me!" - educational movement for military service preparation, funded by the Partnership 2000 Yokneam-Megiddo.

Solomon Schechter Day School of St. Louis

On Wednesday, May 2, 2007, the staff and 7th grade students from Megiddo High School hosted 8th graders from Solomon Schechter Day School of St. Louis. The thirty-five St. Louis students were on a ten-day tour of Israel and came to visit our region as part of the Yokneam-Megiddo – St. Louis partnership. The guests were welcomed with a table of light refreshments and 40 very expectant hosts with looks of curiosity on their faces.

Youth Future Club Opening

The premise of Youth Futures is that children-at-risk should be given educational opportunities to create new futures for them: building self-esteem, creating the ability to believe in a better future and providing them with the tools to create that future. It is a holistic program, and one of the fundamental foundations on which it rests is the provision of a role model committed to the student’s success.
