I spent four days birding down the coast from Solvang, CA to Ventura, CA mainly in Santa Barbara County. This album shows some of the birds and other wildlife I saw during the trip. Whale Watching and Pelagic Seabirding - August 1, 2010

I went on a Whale Watching Tour on the Condor Express out of Santa Barbara Harbor. I was able to also spot multiple species of pelagic seabirds on the trip. We saw 6 Blue Whales and hundreds of Common Dolphins and California Sea Lions.

Yellow-billed Cuckoo Banding and Surveying in CA and AZ

During the summer of 2010, I worked in California and Arizona to survey riparian areas along the Lower Colorado River for Yellow-billed Cuckoos. I also captured and radio tracked some of the cuckoos we found in the riparian areas.

South Dakota to Pennsylvania Road Trip - November, 2008

This was one of the best trips I have ever taken.....Anna was finishing her job up in Kansas/Nebraska and so she picked me up from the airport in Rapid City, SD and we drove to Wyoming, then Colorado, then Kanasas, and then back through to PA over the course of close to a dozen days. I saw 93 bird species (9), 3 butterfly species, and 15 mammal species (3 lifers).

I have had three VW Vanagaons, a 1985 Vanagon GL, a 1984 Vanagon Westfalia, and a 1986 Vanagon Syncro 4X4. I know just have the Westfalia. I have also had a 1981 VW Rabbit PIck-up.

South Africa - January, 2007

My family and I (minus Emma) went to South Africa for a week and a half. It was amazing and I want to go back there as soon as possible. The trip wasnt geared specifically towards birding, but we were out on safari each day and I constantly searched for birds. I ended up seeing 94 bird species (90 lifers) and 25 mammal species, which were all lifers.

Colorado - August, 2007

Short family trip to Colorado. My Dad had a conference in Denver, and I went birding everyday. Main focus was Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). I saw 57 bird species (17 lifers) and 16 mammal species (11 lifers).

Costa Rica - March, 2008

Trip with students and staff from Hershey High School to "observe the culture and biodiversity" of Costa Rica, which quickly and successfully became "find birds for Alex". I saw 122 species of birds on this trip, 92 were lifers. I also saw 7 species of mammals and all 7 were lifers.

Florida - September 2009

PSU paid for me and three other students to attend the Society of American Foresters National Convention in Orlando, FL and participate in the student Quiz Bowl.......I birded the whole time. It was only for 4 days and I really couldnt leave Disney property, so I ended with only 42 bid species, 3 mammal species, and 20 butterfly species. 15 species of the 20 butteflies I saw were lifers.

Nantucket Island - July, 2007

I was invited go up to Nantucket Island to meet Edith Andrews, a world famous Ornithologist. She is 97 years old and still an excellent birder and an amazing person. We were only there a few days, but I went out birding everyday with my parents and our friends, the Goldmans, who live across the street from my parents in Hershey, and who also have a house on the Island. I saw 50 species of birds, and one was a lifer; the saltmarsh sharp-tailed sparrow.

Nebraska to Pennsylvania Road Trip - August, 2008

Anna was done working at her job in Nebraska, so she picked me up at the airport in Omaha, and then we roadtripped back to PA, by way of Wisconsin. In Wisconsin we visited Necedah NWR to see some whooping cranes. We visited 7 states total and I saw 113 bird species (1 lifer), 10 mammal species (1 lifer), and 22 butterfly species (1 lifer), I also had 1 dragonfly lifer.
