Kayak Rigging

Finally finished the deck lines on my kayak. For some unknown reason, my boat did not originally come with lines running the length of the deck. Disappointing reflection on the maker, but not a terribly difficult problem to fix.

2008 Lake with Dale

Dale took the Pygmy he built last fall out on the lake this spring. We practices some rescue techniques, paddling techniques and I discovered a leak in my drysuit(!).

Making Wine

My friend Mark and I have started making wine with a kit we picked up at the local brewing supply shop. He's trying an Amarone, and I'm trying an Italian varietal, basically a mixed Chianti.

Beer-Battered Halibut

Sunday night was beer-battered halibut night. Pretty simple batter recipe using Newcastle Brown Ale, chili pepper, paprika, flour, salt and pepper. This was the halibut caught in the spring of 2006.

Videos from Sea Kayak in the Waves

Using the monopod / camera mount I built for my sea kayak, I've been able to start taking video during adventures that I'd otherwise not dare to be messing with a camera. These videos are from the summer of 2007 during a 125-mile trip from Whittier to Seward, Alaska. This was the first time I started taking video, and in hindsight would have brought more memory in order to capture more. I was also just getting comfortable with the idea of the monopod and paying attention to its impact on my paddling. I'm afraid I still wasn't brave enough to have it in place during some of the more insane paddling days, such as turning around Resurrection Point in 10-foot waves. Nonetheless, here are some of the videos I did get during this trip, and I think they show the value that a boat-mounted monopod can bring to sea kayaking.

Kayak Camera Mount / Monopod

This documents the process of building a monopod for my kayak and waterproof camera, in order to take pictures and shoot video while paddling said kayak. Goals for the project included: low profile design, lightweight, ability to tear down assembly, compatible with standard tripod joints, low to zero-impact on paddling performance.

Halibut Fishing 2007

In the spring of 2007, I went on a halibut charter out of Seward with several workmates. We all caught enough halibut to last a while and trade for other fish with friends. In this album, I have photos of the fishing trip, the steadily increasing number of fish in the hold, and some photos of processing I did once home.

2006 Harriman Fjord Sea Kayak Trip

Just North of Whittier, Alaska, there's a fjord with six huge tidewater glaciers emptying into it. Catch it on a sunny day and it's one of the most scenic places in Alaska. Camping on a black sand beach, staring at an amphitheater of three glaciers and listening to them roar through the night is one of the reasons I live in Alaska.
