Step 1: Take a prefold that has been washed and dried a few times and fold it in half
Step 2: Using the pattern found at http://cloth-crazy.blogspot.com/2009/04/prefold-to-fitted.html place it over the prefold and trace all the way around
Step 3: Cut out the entire traced portion.
Step 4: Now you have 2 half ovals. Okay, this isn't really a step.
Step 5: Unfold both ovals.
Step 6: Place right sides of the ovals together (the soft outerside is "right side" in my mind) and straight stitch sew around leaving an opening at one of the ends.
Step 6: Turn inside out. This is your flappy soaker pad.
Step 7: Turn the ends of the opening inside and zig zag stitch the end of the soaker pad with the opening to the upper center of the inside of the prefold, sealing the opening as you stitch. I just eye-ball it and try not to worry too much about positioning.
Step 8: This is what it should look like now. Also not really a step!! Doing the soaker pad like this helps it dry easily.
Step 9: Cut off the serged ends of the prefold. You could use a ruler and a pen to make it straight. I just eyeball it and cut about an inch or so below the edge.
Final Step: Zig zag stitch 1 inch fold over elastic all around the prefold stretching the most in the back and in the legs.
Voila! You are done!!! What I love about this is that you don't need a serger and they come out super cute and super functional in so little time.
Use a Snappi for easy closure or you could use velcro, although that would take you an extra 5 minutes or so. I used a premimum prefold for this and it fits my 23lb 13 month old perfectly. This pattern/idea would work on any size diaper, you just need to adjust the pattern a bit by shortening the length of the leg openings and keeping the tabs the same.
