Newby: This section of the 1876 Beers map locates the residences of Million, Newby and Heathman families. T(wyman) and J(ohn) Million are near the center of the map. In the top center, G.B. Million marks the location of the Bryant Newby homestead. The Heathman's lived along what is now Jolly Ridge Road, with T(homas) Heathman being at the current 245 Jolly Ridge. The population then was more concentrated along steams, which also provided the roadways. The main roads in and around Newby then followed Silver Creek, Hamms Branch, Jigwater, Bogie Branch, Honest Branch, Crutcher Fork and Joel Barnes Branch. Mule Shed Lane, Jolly Ridge and the New Road (Maple Grove from Newby to Silver Creek) were built later.
