Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal for his wife, and the story goes that he planned to build a second Mahal of black marble to serve as his own tomb. However, he was deposed by his son Aurangzeb and imprisoned in Agra Fort - where he spent the remainder of his life gazing at the Taj Mahal from afar.
