20080330 Joint Traffic Agreement Signing GMS3

Laos hosted the 3rd Greater Mekong Summit in Vientiane during 30 - 31 March, 2008 in which the Joint Traffic Agreement over Railway between Thailand and Laos PDR was signed to facilitate the traffic across Thai border to Thanaleang International station. It is the first railway line in this landlocked country with a plan to further the route to Vientiane.

Rayang Island

Gordon and I found this private island off Trat called Rayang. We spent 3 nights on this beautiful island with no hot shower and limited power. Who cares when we had a big sea water bath and full moon with starry sky to light our way.

Rail Welding ceremony

The Friendship Bridge was closed during 18.00 - 19.00 hrs for the Rail Welding Ceremony attended by many VIPs like Ministries of Transport, Embassies, Provincial Governors and Governors of Railways, local trade associations, railway staff, construction companies and lots of media. The most excited moment was when the torch was lit and the thermit pot melting steel to join the rails. Beautiful blast!

2008 02 02 Thai-Laos Meeting - Tha Pra CY Visit

We spent our Saturday visiting stations in Nong Khai to see area where CIQ offices would be allocated, then Udon Station and CY in Tha Pra, Khon Kean where private company participated to transport sugar. Dinner was by the Lake and we boarded the train back at 21.00

The meeting was attended by almost 100 people from Thai and Lao railways and Nong Khai authorities including Provincial Governor, reps from Customs, Immigration, Quarantine, Public Relations, Trade Chamber and some local media. Pretty high profile for the province.

Saraburi

Our last road trip before Gordon flying back to New Zealand...we went to Supalai Pasak Resort in Saraburi on January 2. As a result, we almost have the whole to ourselves. We pampered ourselves with room service dinner. After breakfast, we spent almost an hour in swimming and jacuzzi pool and playing pool before hitting the road by midday.

Fruit Bats

In my hometown, there is one temple called Wat Tewabudha full with fruit bats which took Gordon's immense interest. We stopped by after lunch with my aunt, cousin and my little niece. He was so interested that the next day we went back and spent 2 hours taking pictures of those bats. Here are some of his almost 200 attempts!

Seagulls

A revisit to Bang Pu proved worthy of the effort as Gordon and I enjoyed nature and animated seagulls for hours before having dinner. Gordon managed a huge collection of seagulls pictures while I recorded them as video and filled my two cards. We meant to visit the Bang Pu Nature Centre but it was closed due to the New Year holidays which was a shame really.

29th ARCC in Myanmar

Gordon accompanied me to the annual regional ASEAN Railways CEO Conference in Myanmar during 18 - 22 December 2007. It was fortunate that his visa and travel arrangement was assisted by many people involved, particularly Kick who is my staff and Khai, the Counsellor at Myanmar Embassy. He was taken around town along with other delegates' spouses and joined the CEO tours, post conference tour and private tour for our group to Bago. The best part would be when he dressed in Myanmar traditional costume to the Farewell Party. I was so pleased to see how lovely it was.

G's Little Birthday

Gordon celebrated his 36th Birthday in a rather unusual fashion by being driven to see dentists - first at Railway Hospital then referred to Faculty of Dentistry, Mahidol University where x-ray and examination was carried out. He then had an appoointment for wisdom tooth extraction on X-mas day. Afternoon was at my office sorting out our trip to Myanmar and my staff running in and out all the time. I meant to bring him to a lovely restaurant for birthday dinner but forget it was monday when that restaurant is usually closed! Lucky that Offy and Jacques got him a birthday cake to brighten up the day. We didn't get to eat it until gettng back from Myanmar and the rest of the cake was taken to my cousin's where P Neung, my nephew, and Natty, my niece, helped lighting and blowing the candles. Happy Birthday G!

Arrival of First ARL Trains 9 November 2007

The unveil of the first two set of Bangkok Airport Rail Link held at Depot for a group of exclusive guests. I was invited as a member and secretary of ad-hoc PR committee for Electrified Train Project. Good food with German beer as the trains are german made (Siemens) and lovely vibe party indeed. The highlight was when the globe was press and a curtain was drawn, one of the trains was driven from the depot to park perfectly at the red carpeted walkway for all guests to board. The night ended with firework display. Many walked away with half-emptied Erdinger beer pint....me with two...heeheee

Media Visit to KL - October

24 - 27 October 2007, my office took a group of journalists to Kaula Lumpur for a technical visit to see the rail network/industry development in our neighbouring country. It was packed with lots of presentation, walk and talk and site visits. Boy it was tiring but yet a very good time to see lots of my friends over there. The formal thing didn't finish till late, like midnight, and we spent our wee hours chatting! Have made more friends from the media world myself which is not bad for my networking practice.

Afternoon at the beach

On our third day, we took it easy by getting up late and lazy about before went to the nearby beach. After chatting with the boat driver the previous day, I meant to look for some blue shelled mussels and was pleased with the quantity I found. My dinner was everywhere!!!! Lying on the beach, another weka came by and started picking our snack...no werz, lots of mussels waiting...so we gave up our rice cracker for that greedy weka

A walk along Queen Charlotte Track

On the second day at the bach, we took a water taxi across to begin our walk along the Queen Charlotte Track. Badly prepared, we had only some water and half a bag of rice cracker to share. At the end of our rather slow 6 hour walk, we met a farmer's stall with cereal bars and cokes (we paid according to the price tag of coz) before stopping for some beer at the Furneaux Lodge and lovely dinner back in our place.

The Bach Experience

We were lucky to rent a very nice bach at a very good price from Gordon's client. Food were bought and packed by local supermarket in picton while Cugar line taxi brought us there. Nice scenery and little show from dolphins made it a trip to remember. We were also greeted by a little weka friend while lunch out on the sunny deck.

After Australia we went to NZ and took a ferry out to Picton for our bach holiday in Endeavour Inlet on Queen Charlot Trail. I was ferry sick and stay flat most of the time though :(

Wildlife at Campsite

At the campsite in Hall's Gap, we stayed in a nice and cozy cabin near the bird feeding ground. So instead of wandering around, Gordon prepared his camera and tripod while me some munchies and wine. Sitting comfortably at the bench outside sipping my wine, I enjoyed the sight of excited Gordon snapping away his canon and excited cockatoos, cuckoo birds and parrots feasting themselves. Blissed!

Father's Day Out

December 5 each year in Thailand is public holiday...the King's Birthday and also national Father's Day. I just got back from Malaysia and took an opportunity to take my niece, nephew, parents and aunt for a day out. Lunch by a local eatery and a visit to cadet academy was rather good fun.

Gordon meant to take me for Lunch in Ohope via Whakatane but forgot the name of the place. In short we were a bit lost and so hungry. Ended up on a beach at the end of Whakatane, we had some sandwiches and noticed this lovely statue against the backdrop of White Island, the active marine volcano.

The place is accessible only at low tide so Gordon was busy checking tide time as part of preparation while me cooking and enjoying my wine (and TV). We originally planned to visit the Hot Water Beach afterward. W ended up enjoying what we saw so much that we missed the beach and had to adjust our plan slightly :)

Strange little town with a CBD 250 metre each direction from the main T-Junction. We stayed at Long Bay Motor Camp, had mussles at 2.50 NZD/Kg, visited private railway at Driving Creek and me losing my voice!

Ferry Terminal at Cook's Bay

The ferry terminal is just opposite our motel. Unfornately, there was no service for car, so instead of 10 minute crossing we had to drive over an hour back to Baffolo Beach!

Hot Water Beach

As the name suggests! The beach is on the fault line with active volcanic activity so the underground water was bubbling hot. People come here anytime to dig their own spa pool, at low tide, and soak it up. So did we. The day ended with lovely coffee and cake.

Wee Time-Out

I managed to sneak some staff up the special train to Nong Khai where we visited the must-see temples of the province and lunch together. They were left wondering round while I rushed off to meet other bosses at the golf course with my draft report! Taking about time and boss management heh?!?!

Time To Go Home

After storing lots of boxes (desktops, laptops, reports, photocopier, stationary, souvenir and bosses' stuff) on the train (one dedicated bogy), we took time to take photoes and buying food for later...as evident by later pics. We are the hard working and noisiest team who, after years of working together, truely enjoy each other company.
