MMX Berlin - Philippe Marcus curates Stephanie Custance in the "Out of Control" Exhibition
If you look to the development inside Stephanie’s artwork during the past three years you will see that a meaningful improvement both on the practical and theoretical dimensions is noticeable. That is what profoundly excites me when I think of what she may bring to this show. When I look to Stephanie’s artwork I ask myself: “how can a human being defines himself as a part of a crowd?” She intends to place the viewer inside of her reflections, both on a physical and theoretical level. When you enter her installations you become a part of it. It has to do with the strong presence of all these figures which are tightly linked together, like they can’t exist as individuality but only as a group. Knowing that her grandfather, father and brother all served in the military, you can analyze better her will. Her preoccupations traduce a form of atavism, a reminiscence of what has been and should not have been. In a sense she puts each one of us in front of his own responsibility.
