Returned Culture & Art Collection
This 18 item collection consists of materials collected by a private collector who resided in the Lower 48 states, who anonymously donated them to SHI in November 2010. In review of the collection, the materials contained herein consist of various carved for artistic purposes and some possible cultural items, most of Tlingit origin, dating to possibly 1870-1970. Some items in the collection are attributed as being Haida or of Northwest Coast origin. The collection contains a clan hat, masks, a headdress frontlet, rattles, carved wooden bowls, curio totems, horn and wooden spoons, a halibut hook, beaded wall pouch, a bone fork, a dagger/wand, and a paddle.
Three items in the collection were possibly carved by one artist for non-cultural purposes, and were created to make the items look older than they actually are. These include the clan hat (Item 1), the headdress frontlet (Item 4), and a rattle (Item 5). These photographs were taken on the day the items arrived at SHI.
